Admin History/Bio
Abraham Cass (1840-1897) married Rachel Rebecca Cass (née [Cowart?]) (1837-1903). They were both born in Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1892 to join their eldest children who had already immigrated to Ontario. The children of Abraham and Rachel Rebecca Cass were: daughters: Fayge (m.Sax) (1861-1942), Hannah (m.Segel) (1863-1930), Martha (m.Soskin) (1866-1946), Dora (m.Levy) (b.1871?), Sarah (m.Levine) (1876-1978), and Annie (m.Smith) (1880- 1952); and, sons: David M. Cass (1869-1959), Bill Cass (b.1874?), and Phillip Cass.
Their son David Mitchell Cass had immigrated to Canada earlier than his parents, in 1889. His wife, Hannah (née Kleiman) (1870-1935), immigrated to Canada in 1890, and they were married in 1894. David Cass worked for Pregger's Grocery Dealer as a salesman and gave Moses Levine work-related advice in this area. David and Hannah lived, in Waubaushene and Tey Township, in Simcoe County, where they were neighbours of the Soskins and where most of their children were born. By 1911, however, they had moved back to Toronto. They had eleven children: Ethel I. (m.Gold) (1894-[1998?]), Infant Cass (unnamed, died at 7 weeks, 1895), "Abe" Abraham B. (1897-1987), Leah G. (m.Harser) (1899-1975), Sarah "Sec" Marie (m.Rogers) (1901-1932), Ely "Hilly" (b.1902), "Reuben" Garfield P. (1904-1991), Dorothy (m.Sandler) (b.1906), Anne (m.Solway) (1907-1994), Rita (m.Appleby), and Libby (m.Balick).
As a new immigrant to Canada, having emigrated from Russia in 1896, Louis Smith (1873-1945) was registered as a tailor in the 1901 federal census. He later worked as a contractor in Toronto. He was married to Annie Cass, Sarah Levine's sister, in 1901 and they lived together at 5 Edward Street, along with Rachel Rebecca Cass, with whom they cohabitated following the death of Abraham Cass.
David and Hannah's son, Abraham Cass, was married to Carrie (née Waldman) in 1922. Garfield married Dorothy (née Simon) and had two children, Donna and Danny. Anne Solway was married to a prominent Toronto violinist and music teacher, Maurice Solway (1906-2001), and they had one son, Stephen.

Item is a photograph of three Cass children standing with a pony on Atlas Avenue in Toronto. There are two girls, a boy, and a man in this photograph. The boy is seated on the pony and is wearing a cowboy hat and kerchief and the two girls are standing on either side of the pony. They are standing on the mud street by the sidewalk in front of a house at 145 Atlas and there is a man standing on the front balcony. It is likely the children are the younger children of David Cass, left to right: Anne, Garfield, and Dora.

Aaron and Sarah (née Snider) Levine (1832-1915) were from Minsk. Sarah immigrated to Toronto with her children in 1887. In 1892, Abraham (1940-1897) and Rachel Cass (1838-1903) came to Toronto with their younger chilldren, following their elder children who had immigrated before them.
The Levine children consisted of the following individuals: Annie (m. Salamansky) (1861-1931); Moses (Moishe) Joseph (1864-1919); Michael (1869-1918); Abraham; Sam; and Rebecca (m. Samuels) (b. 1875).
The Cass children consisted of: Fayge (m. Sax) (1861-1942); Anna (Hannah) (m. Segel) (1863-1930); Martha (m. Soskin) (1866-1946); Dave Cass (1869-1959); Dora (m. Levy) (b.1870); Sarah (m. Levine) (1876-1978); Annie (m. Smith) (1880-1952); Bill Cass; and Phillip Cass.
Sarah Snider Levine lived with her son, Moses, and daughter-in-law Sarah for thirteen years. The couple first lived on Chestnut Street and then moved to Centre Avenue. They later relocated to Spadina Avenue near Dundas around 1903, and finally, moved to 224 Beverley Street near College.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of family photographs that document the Cass and Levine families of Toronto. The records were donated by Mary Soskin, who was the daugher of Moses and Sarah (née Cass) Levine. The records document the donor's matriarchal and patriarchal families. In turn, the records also include photographs of her own family, as well as families related to her or her parents through marriage, such as: the Salamansky (Salem), Thuna, Bliss, Samuels, Soskin, Cass, Segel, Sax, Weiner, Levy, and Rosenbes families. The photographs date from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. The fonds also contains one file of textual records
The fonds has been arranged into 18 series by family, as well as one series for photographs that cannot be linked to an individual family and another for images that could not be identified. Dr. Isadore M. Cass (1916-1996), a well-known pathologist and practicing mohel--Jewish ritual circumcisor--for the Toronto Jewish community, was born and educated in Toronto, attending the University of Toronto's medical school. After serving with the army during the Second World War, Dr. Cass returned to Toronto to private practice. He began studying pathology in 1953, and performed research at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Connaught Labs and the Ontario Department of Health throughout his career. He was chief of pathology at Ajax and Pickering hospitals for twenty-three years, until his retirement in 1986.
In 1945, Dr. Cass began doing ritual circumcisions and was the first medical doctor in Toronto to do so. He performed over 40,000 circumcisions throughout Canada and the eastern United States and trained many physicians to perform them as well.
Dr. Cass was a member of the following organizations: New York Academy of Sciences; the Academy of Medicine, Toronto; the Israel Medical Association; General Wingate Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion; and many other associations and societies.
Dr. Cass studied Torah under Rabbi Jacob Gordon and was a Torah reader at Goel Tzedec Synagogue and later, Beth Tzedec. He also studied and taught Torah throughout his life, chairing the Canadian Jewish Congress' Tanach study group for many years, and leading weekly Gemara classes at Beth Tzedec. He belonged to Shaarei Shomayim and Beth Lida synagogues, as well as Lubavitch. In 1987, Dr. and Mrs. Cass were honoured as "Couple of the Year" by Machanaim, The Network of Educational Institutions in Kiryat Gat, Israel, for their great contributions to this charity over the years.
Dr. Cass was married to Miriam Cass and they had four daughters: Sharon, Hylah, Judy, and Elaine. He had four brothers: the late Rabbi Samuel Cass, Harry, Al, and Elie (who was a Reform mohel), and two sisters: Miriam Cass and Zelda Fink. He also had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dr. Cass died on January 24, 1996 of cancer.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of records relating to the personal and professional life of Dr. Isadore Cass. These records include appointment books documenting circumcisions he performed, correspondence, writings, Tanach study group notes, a Machanaim invitation and programme, prayer books, certificates, memorial cards, and photographs.

Admin History/Bio
Leon Koffler was born in Romania. He moved to Canada and settled in the Toronto area at the age of fifteen with his mother and his three sisters. Leon Koffler worked for Nelson's when he first moved to Canada as a fruit peddler. He graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy in 1921 and two years later opened his first pharmacy on College Street. Leon lived in the apartment above his store with his wife Tiana [née. Reinhorn] and their son Murray.
Scope and Content
Photograph is of Leon Koffler seated in a horse-drawn buggy, peddling fruit and vegetables at age 18.
The buggy has a Nelson's sign on it and the address for 460 Yonge Street.

Admin History/Bio
David Green was born in 1897, in Kaminka, Poland, the son of Reb Chaim Shochet. In 1913, he immigrated with his family to Toronto, at the age of sixteen. Three years later he married Tilly (née Litowitz) and had three children: Hyman, Beulah and Esther.
Green was an active member of several Jewish organizations and clubs, such as the Palestine Lodge, and was president of the Hebrew National Association (Folks Farein), president of Beth Lida Congregation, vice-president of the Mount Sinai Cemetery Association, vice-president of the Jewish Public Library, vice-president of the College Memorial Chapel , vice-president of the Toronto Jewish Old Folks Home, and was on the board of directors of the United Jewish Welfare Fund. Green died on 13 May 1977.

Accession includes three portraits from the 1920s that were sent to Helen Mark's mother as postcards. The majority of the records document David Mark's career as UJA Campaign Director and consist of: photographs, correspondence, invitations, UJA mission records, clippings as well as other material.
Custodial History
The records were donated by Helen Marks and were kept at their home.
Administrative History
David Marks was born in Toronto and was the youngest of three brothers. He moved to Hamilton after marrying his wife Helen during the 1950s and opened up a shoe store. They had two children together, Irving and Anita. After eight years, they returned to Toronto. In 1962, he accepted a position as manager of shelter workshops for Jewish Vocational Services (JVS). He then started working for UJA and in 1968 became its campaign director. He served in that capacity for fourteen years. During that time, he helped raise millions of dollars through the campaign and lead some of the earliest UJA missions to Israel. He travelled to Israel more than thirty times and organized the visits of Israeli leaders to Toronto including David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meier, Menachem Begin, Moshe Dayan, and others.
In 1982, he left his position as campaign director and became the director of development at Mount Sinai Hospital. He then opened up a consulting business with three other community professionals, which provided help to other organizations with their fundraising efforts.
In 2004, David passed away after battling cancer. He left behind his wife, two children and four grandchildren.

Scope and Content
This accession consists of five scanned photographs of David Hart and his father Alfred E. Hart in military dress. Three of the photographs feature Alfred during the First World War in an army uniform and one photograph features Alfred in his uniform standing with David in a naval dress on the street in Toronto. The final photograph is of a victory parade on Yonge Street after the First World War (original source: the City of Toronto Archives, fonds 1568, Item 314). The photograph features Brodey Draimin Fur Co. in the background and was originally published in the Toronto Star.
Administrative History
Alfred E. Hart was in the Canadian infantry during the First World War and fought in four major battles. He was the owner of the Brodey Draimin Fur Company, located on Yonge Street in Toronto. His son, David, was in the Naval Home Guard, Royal Regiment, during the Second World War.

Scope and Content
The accession consists of records related to the work of David Marks. There are a number of programs, including ones for Annual Campaign, a Jewish National Fund of Toronto Negev Dinner Tribute, and Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary's 34th Annual Gala Ball. Additionally, there is an itinerary for a 1972 study mission to Israel and an invitation to meeting welcoming Prime Minister Golda Meir in 1970.
Two of the photographs document David Marks meeting Golda Meir in 1971 and 1974. The third photograph is a group shot, likely of a study mission, in front of an airplane at Lod Airport in Israel.
