- Emil Gartner (1914-1960) was born in Vienna in 1914 and came to Canada in 1938, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1939, he became the conductor of the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir. He is considered by many to be the most influential and dynamic conductor in the choir's history. Under his leadership, the choir became more accomplished and increased in size. As a result, its repertoire increased considerably to include Canadian folk songs, and eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth-century works, in addition to the Yiddish and Hebrew folk songs and operettas that they had performed in the past. During Gartner's tenure the choir also performed with many world-renowned guests and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra often assisted the choir. Fagel Freeman Gartner, the director's wife, was the choir's accompanist. Gartner was also a faculty member at the Hamburg Conservatory of Music in Toronto and remained conductor of the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir until 1959, a year before his sudden death in an automobile crash in 1960.
- Esther Gartner was born in Toronto, Ontario and studied piano and the cello in high school. She continued her studies, focusing on the cello, at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in Performance with honours. After university, she continued her studies in Lausanne Switzerland with the aid of a Canada Council grant. While in Lausanne, she was continuo soloist with L'Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne under the direction of Michel Corboz, was the cellist in the Quatuor Gerecz, and was also a member of L'Ochestre de Chambre de Lausanne for one season. She returned to Toronto to join the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as a cellist and chamber music performer, as well as a teacher.

- Lieutenant Victor Oscar Hertzman was born in Toronto in July, 1918. He received his M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1942, and was in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Core during the Second World War. He married his wife Eileen in 1943, and they had two children, Clyde and Owen. Hertzman and his family moved to Vancouver, where he would be a founding member of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia and the Yukon, and a chair of the British Columbia Society of Internal Medicine. He died in Vancouver in 1994.
- Hertzman specialized in cardiology, and frequently conducted experiments on his sons to prove that carefully prescribed activity was better for heart patients than rest. Prior to these experiments in the early 1960s, this was an idea, but Hertzman research helped turn that idea into an accepted practice. Hertzman's son, Clyde went on to become a doctor whose research would lead to the coining of the now widely used term “biological embedding” to describe how early environment is more a determinant of a child’s future behaviour than genetic makeup. Clyde died on Februrary 8, 2013 of an apparent heart attack.

- Avrom Siegel (4 December 1916 - 18 November 2010) was the fifth child born to Ida and Isidore Siegel in 1916. During the start of the Second World War, Avrom signed up for active service with the RCAF. He was told that the RCAF had too many navigators and was reassigned as a radar operator instead. He was sent to the Agricultural College in Guelph, Ontario where he was educated in electricty and radio. He was then sent to a Royal Canadian Air Force radar training school in Clinton, Ontario. Once graduated, Avrom was stationed overseas in England as a Flight Lieutenant with the operational radar wing of the RCAF, known as the 72 Wing.
- After the war, he was a successful businessman in two businesses. He was also an enthusiastic contributor of his time and energy to many community causes.
