Administrative History
The Morris Black Memorial Essay Contest was established by the Canadian Jewish Congress, Central Region's Department of Education and Culture. The rules and conditions stated in a booklet dated 1973 was that the 'prize or prizes for the best essay or essays or oral address or addresses on men famous in Jewish history...'. The Contest was open to 'All Jewish children in the Province of Ontario outside of Metropolitan Toronto and Ottawa.' The essays submitted in 1973 appeared to follow the Rules and Conditions. However, in the 1976 contest, now sponsored by The Board of Jewish Education, there were no restrictions on where the Jewish children lived or on the gender of the person in Jewish history being written about.

The title of the resulting report is "Evidence of Unequal Opportunity in Employment and a Suggested Fair Employment Practices Legislation". Included are reports, memorandi, correspondence, sample applications from different employers, and a booklet by Gurston Allen entitled "Jewish Occupational Difficulties" (1939).

In addition there is a Canadian Jewish Congress Central Region timeline of the history of the Toronto Jewish Community (1954), a CJC abstract of the proceedings of the Sixth Regional Conference on Jewish Education (1957), as well as editions of The Jewish Herald, The Jewish Standard, and the Canadian Jewish News. In addition, there is material documenting the activities of the Kehillah of Toronto, a religious organization of synagogues and organizations such as mutual benefit societies. Included are correspondence, a ballot page listing congregations and organizations, a financial report, and a legal document in the form of an agreement between the Kehilla of Toronto and shochtim regarding the ritual slaughter of beef.

Accession consists of a Tip Top Tailors wall clock and five tzedakah boxes from Israel. Also included is a postcard of the Mossington Park resort on Lake Simcoe featuring a Gentiles Only sign, several copies from the mid-1940s of the CJC Committee on Social and Economic Studies Information and Comment bulletins, as well as a programme for the 27th anniversary celebrations for the Soviet Union, held at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1944. The program included a message from the Prime Minister, W. L. MacKenzie King, and a broadcast from Paul Robeson. The Master of Ceremonies was Lorne Greene. The content of the CJC studies include: research projects of the CJC (1946), racial discrimination and public policy (1946), the use of the terms "racial origin" and "religion" in the Canadian census (1946), opinion polls and social control (1946), intermarriage and children of intermarriages (1946), prejudice and Canadian unity (1946), comparative occupational distribution (1947), community action versus racial prejudice (1947), audience reaction analysis to the film "Don't Be a Sucker" (1947), Fair Employment Practices Laws for Canada (1947), age distribution of Jewish population in Ontario (1949), Immigration of Jews to Canada (1948), Saskatchewan Bill of Rights Act (1949), Jews in the professions in Canada (1949), answering the bigot: a summary of the Incident control project (1949), Canadian public opinion on racial restrictive covenants (1949), anti-minority discrimination and the law: a Canadian progress report (1950), immigration to Canada 1945 to 1949: official figures, refugee industries in Canada: latest available statistics (1947), and from juvenile immigrant to Canadian citizen (1950). Ben Dunkelman was an avid yachtsman. As member of Toronto's Island Yacht Club--a Jewish club established in the 1950s--he had his own boat called 'The Dinny' and took part in running the club. Besides being a sailor, Dunkelman was an amateur inventor. The sub-series includes a United States patent for a "walking aid for small children".
Scope and Content
Sub-series is made up of six files of correspondence, a hunting story, notes and 12 photographs relating chiefly to Ben Dunkelman’s interest in yachting. The 12 photos are of Ben, Yael and friends yachting. In addition, the sub-series contains Dunkelman's walking aid patent and a letter he wrote to Vintage Grand Touring Automobiles.

Dunkelman maintained private correspondence with a wide variety of friends, from well-known people such as composer Leonard Bernstein, former Israeli defence minister Shimon Peres and former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin to his father David, the lawyer Carl Goldenberg and his father-in-law, David Lifshitz. One correspondence is with Fred Johnson, an acquaintance from the end of the Arab-Israeli War. Fred Johnson helped Ben and Yael establish themselves in Israel in the years following the war. Johnson wrote to Dunkelman in 1975 and they resumed correspondence.

Sub-series contains 12 files of personal correspondence between Benjamin (and sometimes Yael) Dunkelman and family, friends and acquaintances on such subjects as Ben and Yael's marriage, buying a new apartment, condolences for the death of a friend's mother, Yitzhak Rabin's assassination and a retirement application.

Following the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49, Ben Dunkelman frequently travelled to Israel for pleasure as well as for business. Although he once went leopard hunting in Africa, Dunkelman usually visited the Middle East or the United States when outside Canada.

In the latter half of his life, Ben Dunkelman received a variety of honours, mainly for his military achievements in the Second World War and in the Arab-Israeli War.
Scope and Content
Sub-series consists of honours Dunkelman received for his military efforts in the Second World War and in the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-1949. The sub-series includes a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) file that contains information about the British honour and why it was given. It also contains a Testimonial Dinner file relating to a tribute in Toronto attended by Yitshak Rabin in 1978 to honour Dunkelman’s achievements in the Arab-Israeli War, and an Israel Bonds file documenting Dunkelman’s position in 1967 as chairman of the Israel Bonds gala anniversary ball.

Benjamin Dunkelman kept records of his contact both with the National Archives of Canada and with the Military (I.D.F) & Defence Establishment Archives in Israel. His correspondence relates to research for his autobiography Dual Allegiance, as well as to his decision to donate records to both Archives.
Scope and Content
Sub-Series consists of correspondence with and papers from the National Archives of Canada and the Military (I.D.F.) & Defence Establishment Archives. The National Archives material includes a statement giving Dunkelman permission to reproduce and publish Department of National Defence army negatives, along with inventories of records Dunkelman had donated to the Archives. The National Archives of Canada papers also include correspondence between Dunkelman and National Archives archivist Lawrence Tapper. In addition, the sub-series contains a contract between the National Archives and Dunkelman about a collection of his papers that he donated to the Archives. The Sub-Series includes correspondence and a depositor’s agreement with Israel's Military (I.D.F.) & Defence Establishment Archives.

Admin History/Bio
David Dunkelman (1883-1978) was born in Poland to Elias and Leah Dunkelman. He came to Canada with his parents in 1895, settling in Toronto. On 19 January 1910, he married Rose Miller (1889-1949), and together they had 6 children: Joseph, Ernest, Benjamin, Theodora, Veronica (Ourisman), and Zelda (Wilner). David Dunkelman was very active throughout his life in Zionist causes and in philanthropic and communal work. He was the founder, president and chairman of the board of Tip Top Tailors Ltd. (1911) which was one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Canada. For over 50 years David was one of the leaders of the Zionist Organization of Canada. He was also director of the Jewish Home for the Aged and Baycrest Hospital, one of the founders of the North Toronto YMHA, a founder and supporter of the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto, and one of the founders of a village in Israel known as Gan Chaim. He was a member of several clubs and lodges including B'nai Brith, the Empire Club, the Primrose Club and the Canadain Friends of Hebrew University. David married Pearl Reisman Rotenberg in 1950, after the death of his wife Rose Dunkelman in 1949.

Notes
Writing on the back of the photo reads: Shoshana Rose Dunkelman the daughter of Miller from Toronto died [date] devoted all her life to the building of the country only after her death were her wishes fulfilled. This is probably the inscription on Rose's tombstone.
