In 1913 a charitable organization called the Ezras Noshim Society was formed to help elderly women. Ezras Noshim start collecting funds in 1917 to purchase a home that would be converted into Toronto's first Jewish Old Folks Home. The forerunner to Baycrest Centre opened in 1919 as the Toronto Jewish Old Folks Home on Cecil Street in downtown Toronto where the women of Ezras Noshim made beds, cooked kosher meals, washed sheets and sponsored fund-raising events.
In 1954, the Jewish Home for the Aged opened on Bathurst Street to accomodate their expanding needs and a new feature -- Baycrest Hospital.
This location continued to expand including a new building for residents in 1968, the Baycrest Terrace and The Joseph E. and Minnie Wagman Centre in 1976. These additions enabled Baycrest to expand their services to include a community centre, an enhanced apartment building, a home for the aged, a day care service and a hospital.
In 1986 a new Baycrest Hospital was erected, and in 1989, the Rotman Research Institute, which is also affiliated with the University of Toronto, opened to create a research facility enabling top researchers to study and find new treatment methods for the elderly.
In recent years, Baycrest's research activities have expanded to include the Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit (est. 1995), which evaluates clinical programs and conducts long-term studies of health issues affecting older adults and the Kunin Lunenfeld Clinical Research Unit (est. 1996), which links researchers with Baycrest clinical departments to enable prompt implementation of research findings. These two programs merged in 1998 to become the Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit.
Apotex Centre, the Jewish Home for the Aged and the Louis and Leah Posluns Centre for Stroke and Cognition opened in 2000. This centre is responsible for residents with progressive dementia and vascular dementia.
Baycrest Centre also provides numerous cultural and religious programs for the inhabitants and the greater community, including a heritage museum, art exhibits and a Holocaust program.

Admin History/Bio
The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Toronto was incorporated in Ontario in March 1917 to coordinate the fundraising activities of Jewish charitable, philanthropic, and social service agencies in Toronto. In 1918, ten separate agencies were funded by the FJPT. By 1937, fourteen agencies were funded. The Great Depression of the 1930s and the development of several newer Jewish aid, education and medical care organizations created both increased need for resources and growing competition for ever-more scarce dollars. Within a very few years this funding crisis forced a major review of the organization.
During 1936 a series of special meetings of leading individuals were held to examine the income and expenditures of all Toronto Jewish agencies and also to speculate about the need for a new Toronto Jewish "Community Chest" as the sole fund-raising organization for a federation of all Jewish agencies including the FJPT. In 1938, the new United Jewish Welfare Fund was formally constituted. Added to the FJPT's previous list of Toronto client agencies in 1938 were: the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Hebrew National Association, the Jewish Immigrant Aid Association, the Mizrachi Society, the Toronto Free Loan Association, the Geverkshaften, and Old Folks Home, and the United Palestine Appeal, raising the total number of agencies to 22.
When the State of Israel was established in 1948, the UJWF's annual fundraising campaign was combined with the CJC's United Palestine appeal to form a new, combined campaign named the United Jewish Appeal (UJA). In 1967, the UJA name was legally changed to the United Jewish Appeal of Metropolitan Toronto.
In mid-1976, the organization's public name was changed to the Toronto Jewish Congress. Although initially thought of as a merger between the UJWF and the CJC, the actual result was the expansion of the UJWF responsibilities to include local education and welfare services previously shared with the Canadian Jewish Congress, Central Region. The UJWF, however, remained the legal senior entity.
In 1991 the public name was again changed to the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto and in 1999, to UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. By this date, over 30 beneficiary and affiliated agencies, 49 affiliated schools and five Federation departments were fully or partly funded by the UJA Federation.
In June, 2010, the organization altered its legal structure, with the senior legal entity becoming the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.

Admin History/Bio
United Jewish Welfare Fund's annual general meeting is the annual gathering of general delegates and members of the UJA Federation Council. In general, the Annual Meeting is adjourned after the introductory speeches, then the Council convenes for its meeting, adjourns and the Annual Meeting is re-convened. The Council is made up of delegates representing synagogues, agencies, schools, communal organizations, societies and landsmenshaften of the Toronto community. It is responsible for electing the Federation President, Governors and directors of UJA Federation, as well as appointing auditors, introducing and approving the by-laws of UJA Federation/UJWF. Until 2005, the AGM included the presentation of the Shem Tov volunteer recognition awards, the Leadership Development Awards, the Ben Sadowski Award of Merit for outstanding volunteer contributions, and beginning in 1997, the Phil Granovsky Award for Campaign Excellence. The AGM was usually followed by a reception.
Starting in 1975, when the merger of CJC's Central Region and UJWF was initiated, there continued to be multiple annual meetings for the organizations that today are encompassed by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. In the second half of the 1970s, during the interim period before the adoption of a constitution for the new Toronto Jewish Congress, CJC and UJWF, though they began to have joint meetings and programs, continued to operate separately with separate executives. Once the establishment of TJC was finalized, UJWF "ceas[ed] to exist as a functional community organization" but remained as a "wholly owned subsidiary" of TJC. UJWF remained a legal entity and a partner in the United Jewish Appeal campaign, and was separate insofar as it produced its own financial reports and held its own annual meetings. Similarly, the UJA, as a program of UJWF, held its own annual meetings.
Scope and Content
Series consists of meeting agendas, minutes, programmes, speeches, delegate and nominee lists, correspondence and audio recordings of annual meetings of the United Jewish Welfare Fund/Toronto Jewish Congress/Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto/UJA Federation from 1939 to 2009, and photographs from annual meetings and awards receptions from 1978 to 2004.
