Rabbi Israel Hurwitz was rabbi for the congregation Anshe Lida during the 1930s and for the congregation Chevra Mikra during the 1960s and 1970s. He was also former President of the Toronto Rabbinical Association and was a shochtim for the Vaad Hoir, or United Jewry, which was established as a rival supervisory body to that of the Kehilla.
