Scope and Content: Accession consists of material documenting the Workmen's Circle (Arbeiter Ring). Included are: three architectural drawings of the summer cottage for Camp Yunvelt (Pickering, Ont.); two group portraits (one with identification and one without); a bound periodical/journal from 1935; a hardcopy of Fertsik yor arbeter-ring: a geshikhte in bilder (English: Forty Years Workmen's Circle: A History in Pictures) put out by the National Executive Committee of the Workmen's Circle in 1940; a bound periodical/journal of Kultur un dertsiung (English: Culture and Education) for the year 1942; a bound periodical/journal of Der freynd (English: The Friend) for the year 1942; a booklet by Rev. Nathan Stolnitz's titled Some of the Numerous Comments and Reviews on Music in Jewish Life (1957?); a newspaper clipping titled "A bukh vom oyngt" (English: A Book That Opens) that was published in 1957; a hardcopy of Workmen's Circle, Pioneers and Builders put out by the Workmen's Circle Pioneers and Builders Committee in 1962; and two other Yiddish-language publications that have not been identified.

Administrative History: The Workmen's Circle (Yiddish: Arbeiter Ring) was founded in the United States by Jewish immigrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Circle branches were established in Canada in Montreal and Toronto in 1907 and 1908. In 1917, the Toronto branches incorporated as nonprofit organization called the Arbeiter Ring. The organization celebrated its centenery in 2017.

Descriptive Notes: Language: Most of the material in the accession is in Yiddish. The drawings are in English and a few of the publications are in English and Yiddish.

Admin History/Bio: The Workmen's Circle (Arbeiter Ring) is a radical left Jewish fraternal organization founded in 1900. It was originally established to protect the rights of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who were entering the North American labour force. The Workmen's Circle's main purpose was to promote the labour movement and ensure economic justice for its members. It also promoted secular Yiddish culture, and ran many schools and summer camps across North America, such as Camp Yungvelt in Pickering.; The I.L. Peretz School began as the Toronto Yiddish National-Radical School in 1911. It was founded by Socialist-Territorialist members Isaac Matenko, Abraham Rhinewine, Paul Frumhartz, Aaron Bromberg, H. Rigelhaupt, L. Goldman, and Louis Koldovsky in order to promote Yiddish culture and language. By 1916, it had been taken over by the Workmen’s Circle and renamed the I.L. Peretz School. The founders overcame many obstacles to establish the school, including opposition from religious groups (which preferred Hebrew over Yiddish); a lack of support from the Jewish community; and a serious lack of funds.; The school began in a rented room in the Zionist Institute on Simcoe St., with about forty students. By the following school year, the number had increased to 330, due to cheap tuition and a good reputation. The growing number of students necessitated several moves to larger spaces, among them 260 Richmond St. W. and 194 Beverley St. Later, other branches and other levels (kindergarten to mittelshul) were established on Maria St., Bellwoods Ave., and St. Clair Ave. The school flourished for about 50 years before its decline and ultimate closure.

Scope and Content: Series consists of records documenting Isaac Matenko's involvement in the Workmen's Circle and the affiliated I.L. Peretz School and Camp Yungvelt. Included are photographs, programmes, certificates, a yearbook, a songbook, and newsclippings.

The colony was unused at the time of the photographs and so the structures are in a state of disrepair. The photographs were taken by Jill Culiner, whose family had a cottage at the colony.

Admin History/Bio: On July 11, 1933 over 15,000 people (mostly Jewish and working class) walked off the job to protest Nazism, fascism, and other human rights issues. Reported in the Globe and Mail as the largest protest of its kind in Canada since the 1919 Winnipeg general strike, a united front of all the needle trade unions and over fifty Jewish organizations took part.

Scope and Content: Item is a photograph of two men holding a banner with a slogan which reads "To Victory! Under the Banner of Lenin and Trotsky" at an International Left Opposition demonstration in Toronto. This photo was likely taken during the large anti-fascist demonstration that took place in Toronto on July 11, 1933.

Scope and Content: Item is a group portrait of Workmen's Circle Branch 384. The photograph was taken on the occasion of the branch's thirtieth anniversary. Leo Badash of Hamilton is seated in the front row, third right.

Custodial History: George Leaf (né Lipshitz), who is depicted in the group portrait fourth from the left in the top row, was a member of Workmen's Circle Branch 384. He died in 1945.; George's youngest daughter, Rose, who lived in the family home from her birth in 1922 until her death in 2012, had two copies of the framed photograph in her possession when she died.; A neighbour and good friend of Rose's, who received much of Rose's estate, saved photographs and personal possessions, which she gave to Jeffrey Levinn, Rose's first cousin once removed.; In 2018, Jeffrey Levinn donated a copy of the framed photograph to the Ontario Jewish Archives.

Administrative History: The Workmen's Circle (Yiddish: Arbeiter Ring) was founded in the United States by Jewish immigrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Circle branches were established in Canada in the first decade of the twentieth century. The Hamilton branch's number was 384.

The Toronto Workmen’s Circle was established in 1909 to promote workers rights, the Yiddish language and secular Jewish culture. In addition to running schools, the group founded Camp Yungvelt (Young World) on Lake Wilcox in 1925. A year later, the camp moved to a parcel of land in Pickering donated by a group of Workmen’s Circle members who had purchased the land to establish a Jewish cottage colony. The Workmen’s Circle relied on the generous support of its members at a time when the Jewish community supported the study of Hebrew over Yiddish. In addition to recreational activities, the camp focused on teaching Yiddish language and culture. The camp closed in 1971.

It was originally created to protect the rights of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who were trying to enter the North American labour force. The Workmen's Circle's main purpose was to protect the labour movement and ensure economic justice for its members; Still strong today, the organization promotes Jewish and Yiddish culture through educational and cultural programs, and as well, is a leader against injustice in the Middle East. They also organize protests for a variety of causes, including unethical labour practices, abortion rights, and gun violence prevention; Some of their programs include adult lecture series, secular Jewish children's schools, summer camps, and dramatic and choral organizations; Workmen's Circle / Arbeiter Ring's call to action is "for all to create a more beautiful and better world"

Admin History/Bio: On July 11, 1933 over 15,000 people (mostly Jewish and working class) walked off the job to protest Nazism, fascism, and other human rights issues. Reported in the Globe and Mail as the largest protest of its kind in Canada since the 1919 Winnipeg general strike, a united front of all the needle trade unions and over fifty Jewish organizations took part.

Scope and Content: Item is a photograph of an International Left Opposition (ILO) demonstration depicting a large group of protestors walking carrying banners. This is likely the large anti-fascist protest, which took place in Toronto on July 11, 1933.
