Administrative History

Canadian Young Judaea was founded in 1909 as a Zionist movement for Canadian youth by members of the Herzl Zion Club. As a Zionist organization, Young Judaea continues to be committed to fostering a sense of Jewish identity and values in today's Jewish youth and to encouraging a lifelong commitment to Israel. In order to foster a closer connection to Israel, Canadian Young Judaea employs educational Shlichim from Israel who are posted to various Jewish communities throughout Canada and to offices at the national level in Toronto Young Judaea also operates several Zionist summer camps located in each region of Canada, and a summer leadership institute called Camp Biluim in Quebec. In addition to the social programme of the organization, Young Judaea also offers educational seminars and conferences. Young Judaea's national structure includes a National Executive Board and an Administrative Council. Conventions are held regularly, as are regional conferences. In the past, Young Judaea operated as an associated, but distinct, organization from the Zionist Organization Canada. However, Young Judaea operations were overseen by the ZOC executive, and Young Judaea received their budget from the ZOC Treasury. In addition, ZOC and Young Judaea worked in conjunction with one another on many projects and programmes, such as with the operation of the Zionist camps.

Camp Solelim was founded in 1965. Its name comes from Kibbutz HaSolelim in Israel which recognizes the builders who were integral to the establishment of the State of Israel. The program is infused with informal social, Jewish and Zionist educational programs. Like many of the camps founded earlier, campers are encouraged to participate in the functioning of the camp and derive a strong sense of responsibility through daily camp operations and camp projects.

Camp Biluim was founded in 1961 under the auspices of the Zionist Organization of Canada as a national leadership training institute for Canadian youth. Originally located in Huntsville Ontario, the camp moved to Mont Tremblant, Quebec in 1976, where it remains today under the full operation of Canadian Young Judaea. The purpose of the camp was to provide practical and transferable leadership training to a slightly older group of Jewish Canadian youths, most of whom were members of Young Judaea. Many Camp Biluim graduates later returned to ZOC summer camps as counsellors or found senior administrative positions in Canadian Young Judaea. Camp Biluim was co-administered by the National Camps Association, and during its period in Ontario, the Ontario Camps Association. However, daily operation and staffing of the summer camp was provided by Canadian Young Judaea.

This accession consists of textual and graphic records documenting the programs and activities of Canadian Young Judaea. The records include newsletters and publications, photographs, anniversary books, and program books. There are also two compact discs containing scanned copies of the photographs from this accession.

Custodial History

These records were gathered together for an anniversary celebration held in November 2007. Most of the records were found in the basement of the office building on Marlee Avenue, before being donated to the archives.

Canadian Young Judaea was founded in 1909 as a Zionist movement for Canadian youth by members of the Herzl Zion Club. As a Zionist organization, Young Judaea continues to be committed to fostering a sense of Jewish identity and values in today's Jewish youth and to encouraging a lifelong commitment to Israel.

In order to foster a closer connection to Israel, Canadian Young Judaea employs educational Shlichim from Israel who are posted to various Jewish communities throughout Canada and to offices at the national level in Toronto Young Judaea also operates several Zionist summer camps located in each region of Canada, and a summer leadership institute called Camp Biluim in Quebec. In addition to the social programme of the organization, Young Judaea also offers educational seminars and conferences.

Young Judaea's national structure includes a National Executive Board and an Administrative Council. Conventions are held regularly, as are regional conferences. In the past, Young Judaea operated as an associated, but distinct, organization from the Zionist Organization Canada. However, Young Judaea operations were overseen by the ZOC executive, and Young Judaea received their budget from the ZOC Treasury. In addition, ZOC and Young Judaea worked in conjuction with one another on many projects and programmes, such as with the operation of the Zionist camps.

Scope and Content

The series consists of files relating to the administrative operations of Canadian Young Judaea at the national level between 1957 and 1979. These records include: National Young Judaea meeting minutes, Young Judaea Adult Committee meeting minutes, executive meeting minutes and reports, Maskirut meeting minutes and reports, national kinus records, education programmes, national publications and newsletters, national studies, financial records, constitutions, staffing and administration records, and camp records.

Accession consists of one panoramic photograph of the First Mizrachi Canadian Convention attendees seated at dinner tables. The convention took place on April 21-23, 1939. Identified in the photo is Morris Soberman, future cantor at Beth Tzedec.

Administrative History

Mizrachi is an international religious Zionist movement founded in Vilnius in 1902. Bnei Akiva, founded in 1929 is its youth movement. Mizrachi Canada is its Canadian branch. Allan Soberman is a singer/songwriter/musician and son of Cantor Morris Soberman. Cantor Morris Soberman was the Ba'al Koreh, Chazan Sheni and bar mitzvah teacher at Beth Tzedec Synagogue in Toronto with additional years spent at Goel Tzedec and the McCaul Street Shul.

Admin History/Bio

The first meeting of the Canadian Jewish Congress was held in Montreal from March 16-19, 1919. Their intended goal was to mobilize Canadian Jews and discuss the following issues: the community's self-image and future, national minority rights in Eastern Europe, the future of a Jewish national home in Palestine and the recognition of a Jewish nation by the League of Nations. This conference was followed in May of that year by several district conferences held in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.

On January 26, 1919, a conference attended by 125 local organizations was held in the Baron de Hirsch Institute. The conference recognized the necessity for a Canadian Jewish Congress, and elected a committee of forty to arrange the first national CJC meeting. The committee divided Canada into three territorial districts: Montreal (Quebec), Toronto (Ontario), and Winnipeg (Western Canada), and each district was to arrange elections to send delegates.

Ontario sent a total of 65 delegates to the first national CJC meeting in March of 1919. 40 of these were from Toronto. Elections for the all the delegates took place on March 2, 1919. A large majority of Canadian Jews participated in these elections.

Across the country, 25,000 ballots were cast during the 1919 election. This indicated that a huge portion of the Canadian Jewish community was involved in the CJC, since the total Jewish population at that time was 125,000.

The first CJC Plenary Assembly, involving the group seen in this photo, was from March 16-19, 1919 (Purim), and the photo was taken on the 18th on the steps of the Baron de Hirsch building at 2040 Bleury St., but the actual meetings were held nearby at the Monument Nationale Theatre, which had a larger auditorium.

Scope and Content

The item is a panoramic photograph of the delegates who took part in the first Canadian Jewish Congress plenary session in Montreal. The photo was taken on March 18, 1919 on the steps of the Baron de Hirsch building on 2040 Bleury St., though the actual meetings were held nearby at the Monument Nationale Theatre, which had a larger auditorium.

Three members of the Goldstick family were elected delegates to this conference from Toronto: Maurice Goldstick, Betty Goldstick and Henry Dworkin. In turn, many prominent members of the Toronto community took part such as: M. Gelber (manufacturer), Ben Zion Hyman (book store owner and scholar), I. Matenko (teacher), Dr. Pollock (physician), Sam Factor (lawyer), and A. Cohen (lawyer).

A detailed account of the formation of the Canadian Jewish Congress can be found in A.D. Hart's "The Jew in Canada" (1926). An original ballot to elect Toronto's delegates to the meeting is located in accession 2004-5/162. Also, see the ZOC fonds, #27, for minutes documenting CJC from this time period. Finally, MG6E3 in the file cabinet contains 2 files documenting Maurice Goldstick and Betty's involvement in the CJC in 1919, and later Maurice and Dorothy's involvement in Congress during the 1930s. Some of the individuals have been identified in a photocopy of this item which is available in the accession records. A full delegates list can be found in Hart's "The Jew in Canada.".
