Admin History/Bio
Eric Exton (1919–2001) was born in Potschappel, Germany. He was expelled in the Kristallnacht purge of students from his college in November 1938, where he studied industrial chemistry. He fled to England, where he was interned and then sent to Canada in 1940, where he spent a year in the Sherbrooke internment camp for refugees.
Eric and Esther Exton were married on 17 August 1948. They had two children named Sybil and Lennie. Esther was a dressmaker for many years, and Eric worked in a variety of different positions, eventually starting the first mortgage investment corporation to be publicly traded in Canada.
Eric was president of the Eglinton Lodge B'nai B'rith in 1959, president of Hillel in 1970, and chairman of the inaugural convention of the Federated Zionist Organization of Canada in 1967. He also held the positions of treasurer, vice president, and president of the Toronto organization of the Jewish National Fund. Finally, he served as president of Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care for a three-year term.
Esther Exton was also a member of the Eglinton Chapter B'nai B'rith and was president for one term and co-chairman of B'nai B'rith Women's Israel Bond Committee. She was also co-chairman for the Women's Division of United Jewish Appeal Israel Special Fund campaign and president of the Women's Auxiliary of Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care.
Both Eric and Esther were devoted to the cause of Israel and the Jewish community in Toronto. Their dedication was passed on to their two children who, following their parents lead, have taken active roles within the Jewish community.
Scope and Content
File consists of negatives documenting the Negev dinner held in tribute to Eric and Esther Exton.
The evening's programme included presentations and speeches from the following: Robert R. Hall, Frank Wolfe, Rabbi Erwin Schild, Rabbi J. Benjamin Friedberg, Hon. David Ariel, Nathan Scott, Jack Gwartz, Jack Friedman, Abe Posluns, Nathan Starr, Dr. Mark A. Siegal and Joseph Kerzner.

Admin History/Bio
Rabbi Erwin Schild was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1920. Six weeks before his bar mitzvah, the Nazi Party took over the German government. Nevertheless he was able to finish High School and to continue his Jewish studies at the Jewish Seminary in Würzburg, in southern Germany, interrupted by the events of the Night of Broken Glass, in November 1938. At eighteen years of age, he was imprisoned and incarcerated in the Dachau Concentration Camp. After a period of detention, he was released and immigrated to Britain as a student at a Yeshiva in London. When Britain declared war with Germany, thousands of Jewish refugees from Germany were deemed security risks and interned in prison camps. Schild was among those internees – mostly male, young and not married – who were shipped to Canada to be interned as enemy aliens for the duration of the war. In February 1942, through the efforts of Rabbi Price, supported by the Canadian Jewish Congress, he was liberated to continue his studies in Toronto at the Yeshiva Torath Chaim and at the University of Toronto. After five years of study, he was ordained by the eminent scholar Rabbi Abraham Price at the Toronto Yeshiva Torath Chaim. He studied Semitic Languages and Literature at the University of Toronto and earned a B.A. degree, soon to be followed by an M.A. He married Montreal-born Laura Saxe and became the father of a son, followed by two daughters. In 1947, at 27 years of age, he was selected as the Rabbi of the First Hebrew Roumanian Congregation Adath Israel, also known as the Rumanishe Shul, which was to be his first and only position. He retired in 1989, after 42 years of service, and was offered the honourific title of Rabbi Emeritus. Throughout his life, he has been granted several awards, such as the Order of Canada, the Order of Merit Officers’ Class of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Gold Medal for Peace through Dialogue of the International Council of Christians and Jews, and the Honourary Doctorate of Philosophy of the University of Osnabrück in Germany.
Scope and Content
Series consists of 14 audio reels containing Rabbi Schild's segment for The Jewish Hour, broadcast by CHIN Radio on Sundays. He discusses moral aspects of Jewish life, as well as the history of Zionism and news about antisemitism and the Jewish community.

Scope and Content
Item consists of Rabbi Schild's segment. He discusses the situation surrounding Sikh asylum claimers that landed in Nova Scotia. He questions whether they are truly refugees since, according to them, Sikhs are not a persecuted minority in India. Although he acknowledges the violent persecution to Sikhs after the assassination of Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards, he claims that the very fact that she had Sikh bodyguards shows that they are not a persecuted minority. He goes on to justify the suspicions of the Canadian authorities and to support their proceedings.

Administrative History
Rabbi Kelman was born in Vienna, Austria in 1927, the son of Rabbi Zvi Yehuda and Mirl Kelman and the descendent of a long line of distinguished rabbis. He immigrated to Toronto with his family at the age of three in 1930. He attended Harbord Collegiate and was ordained at Yeshiva University in New York. Beginning in 1953, Kelman became seved as a rabbi in Sherbrooke, QC; Beverley, MA; and Suffern, NY; before accepting the pulpit at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagoge in Toronto in 1959. At the time, Beth Emeth was a small congregation in the fledgling Bathurst Manor neighbourhood. He facilitated its merging with Bais Yehuda to form BEBY, and under his guidance it grew to become the third-largest Conservative synagogue in the GTA with a membership of approximately 1,500 families.
Kelman's life work was dedicated to providing opportunities for the developmentally disabled and learning challenged in the Jewish community. He was the founder of the Ezra and Kadima Schools, the Kadima Centre, the Camp Tikvah program, the Reena Foundation, Chai Tikvah, and She'arim Hebrew Day School. He also served as a chaplain in Toronto hospitals and jails.
Rabbi Kelman was the recipeint of numerous awards for his contributions to Jewish education and community service, including a honorary doctorate from Ryerson University and Tel Aviv University. The Kelman School for Jewish Education at Tel Aviv University is named in his honour. Rabbi Kelman died on 27 June 2009 at the age of eighty-two.
