Admin History/Bio
The Canadian Jewish Farm School was established in 1927 by Morris Saxe, president of the Federated Jewish Farmers of Ontario. It was a training school for Polish war orphans brought to Canada after the First World War. It was owned and operated by Morris Saxe on his Main Street South farm in Georgetown, Ontario. Saxe, along with Eli Greenblatt of Detroit, was responsible for bringing the orphans over from Mezritch, Poland. Greenblatt raised the funds for their transportation and Saxe arranged for their entry permits. The children were allowed to enter the country, provided that they lived and worked on the farm. Their duties involved milking cows, looking after chickens, and harvesting corn and other crops. The Saxe family also owned a creamery business, first in Acton, and then on Guelph Street in Georgetown.
The Jewish Farm School was the second attempt by Saxe to assist Jewish immigrants with agricultural training. The first was established a year prior in 1926, to help European immigrants gain knowledge of Canadian farm life. However, it succumbed to several problems, mostly related to Jewish interests in the community using the school as a way of gaining entry for immigrants who would otherwise not be eligible -- a plan which Saxe disapproved of, which created dissention within the community. When Greenblatt became involved the following year, the focus shifted to helping Jewish war orphans.
Edmund Scheuer and Ida Siegel were most likely at the school event because of their mutual interest and involvement in aiding Jewish immigrants and in Jewish education and training.
Scope and Content
Item is a photograph of Ida Siegel standing alongside Edmund Scheuer at the Jewish Farm School in Georgetown, Ontario. Edmund is wearing a tuxedo. The photograph may have been taken at the official opening of the school.
Notes
One photograph is a copy of the original.
The writing on the copy photograph indicates that the farm was located in Guelph, which is incorrect. The date is also written as 1923, which is also incorrect, since the first school was not established until 1926, with the likely date of the photograph being 1927.
The writing on the original photograph states that the photograph was taken in Acton, which is incorrect as the Jewish Farm School was located a short distance away in Georgetown.

Admin History/Bio
The Scheuer family dates back to at least the eighteenth century in Germany to Moise Scheuer (1765-1846) and Esther Ackerman (1770-1847). Their son, Isaac Scheuer (1809-1889), married Hannchen (Johanna) Strauss (1815-1878) in 1843. Isaac and Johanna had six children: Gabriel (1844-1922), Camilla (1845-1916), Edmund (1847-1943), Emma (1853-1916), Ida (1855-1902), and Benno (Benjamin) (1857-1921).
While Gabriel, Emma, and Ida remained in Europe, Camilla, Edmund, and Benno immigrated to Canada in the late nineteenth century. Camilla came to Hamilton, Ontario after her marriage in 1866 to Herman Levy, co-founder of the Levy Brothers jewellery business. Edmund became a partner in the business when he first immigrated to Canada in 1871, and lived with Camilla and Herman. Camilla became the acknowledged leader of Jewish women in Hamilton. She served in organizations such as the Deborah Ladies' Aid Society, which eventually became an auxiliary of Temple Anshe Sholom, Canada's oldest Reform congregation, often referred to as the Hughson Street Temple. Edmund established the first Sabbath School in Ontario at Anshe Sholom in 1872 and served as president from 1873 to 1886.
After he was established in Hamilton, Edmund returned to Europe in 1873 to marry Oda Strauss (1854-1913) at Forbach, Lorraine, and then brought her back to Canada with him. The couple moved to Toronto in 1886, where he established a wholesale jewellery business on Yonge Street called Scheuer's under his company Edmund Scheuer Limited. Scheuer's was one of the oldest jewellery firms in Toronto and the oldest established wholesale diamond importer in Canada. Edmund's brother, Benno, also worked for the business as the accountant and then secretary-treasurer. Benno was married to Gatella Strauss (1859-1903) and they had three children: Eddie Jr. (1884-1967), Rhoda (1886-1963) and Isadore (1887-1969). Eddie Jr. and Isadore also worked for their uncle's business. Eddie Jr. started as a clerk and then became vice-president, while Isadore started out as a travelling salesman and jeweller. When their uncle retired in 1922, Eddie Jr. took over as president and his brother Isadore became vice-president of Scheuer's.
In addition to his jewellery business, Edmund Scheuer also taught and supervised the religious school at Holy Blossom Synagogue. He went on to serve in every official capacity at Holy Blossom, including vice-chairman and treasurer of the building committee for the Bond Street building. He also founded The Jewish Free School at 206 Beverley Street for Jewish girls and wrote his own textbook for the school, the first Jewish religious school book printed in Toronto. In 1892, he founded the first Jewish benevolent society in Toronto and was later president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. In 1927, the Beverley Street building, which housed Federation offices, was dedicated in his honour and named the "Scheuer House".
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of records documenting the Scheuer family in Germany, Hamilton, and Toronto. The fonds is made up primarily of photographs of Scheuer family members and friends. It also includes some textual records, including correspondence, marriage certificates, a Toronto Jewish Free School text book, and Holy Blossom Temple Bulletins. Also included are two brass "Scheuer's" window plates which were likely from Edmund Scheuer's jewellery business of the same name.

The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Toronto (FJPT) was made a charitable organization under the laws of Ontario in March, 1917. Its central goal was to end the frequent, uncontrolled, and competitive fund soliciting by a wide range of individual Toronto Jewish philanthropic and social service institutions and instead substitute a single coordinated city-wide community fundraising effort. This would ensure adequate and accountable funding for all its affiliated organizations and agencies in Toronto. The first office of the FJPT was at 206 Beverley St., but by 1924 it was headquartered at 218 Simcoe St. and by 1928 it had moved to 179 Beverley St., which was renamed "Scheuer House" after the FJPT's first president, Edmund Scheuer.

Administrative History
Nathan Gittelmacher immigrated to Toronto from Kiev, Ukraine after the First World War. He first worked as a photographer at Empire Studios, and then in 1922, opened up his own studio, Elite Studios, at 615 Queen Street West. Many of Nathan’s portraits were produced with a large format view camera and from glass negatives.
During the 1940s, the family changed its name to Gilbert and subsequently altered the name of the business to Gilbert Studios. Nathan’s son, Albert, who was born 18 November 1922, started working in the family business in 1941, when he was 19 years old. He eventually assumed control of it after his father retired. He moved the studio to Eglington Avenue and then later to Davenport Road, its current location, in order to accommodate its growing clientele.
Al made a name for himself as a portrait photographer, using natural light in innovative ways to create more natural looking portraits. Al’s primary work involved producing portraits of families, weddings, bar mitzvahs, special events and dinners. Most of his early clients were from the Jewish community. In turn, he also was paid to produce portraits of local entrepreneurs, and his multi-year contract with the city, gave him sole responsibility for the production of portraits of the mayors and councilmen and women. He later branched out beyond the Jewish community, and began to produce images of businessmen and leaders from the Italian community in Toronto.
n addition to the paid contracts involving local personalities and groups, Al Gilbert has also produced many artistic portraits of local, national and international celebrities, artists and leaders such as: Wayne and Shuster, Howie Mandel, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Robertson Davies, several Canadian prime ministers as well as Prince Charles, all of the Israeli prime ministers, which were made into stamps by the Israeli government, and finally, the last Pope. Gilbert’s work therefore captures a huge range of individuals from the ordinary bride to extraordinary world leaders.
Al has won many awards as well as accolades from his peers throughout his career. He is the three-time recipient of the prestigious Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) Photographer of the year honour. He has been named Fellow of the photographic societies in Canada, Britain and the United States. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Canada and recently nominated for the Order of Ontario. In January 2007, the Professional Photographers of America presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is the highest honor PPA can bestow on a person for their body of work and influence on professional photography.
