- The Gelber Brothers, Louis and Moses, were born in what is now Austria in the late nineteenth century. Together they founded the Imperial Clothing Company, which later became Gelber Brothers Woollens. Their head office was located in the Gelber Building at 217-225 Richmond Street West. Although selling woollens was their main business, the brothers had other investments, including ownership of a service station at Simcoe and Richmond and a public garage at 287 Spadina Avenue. After the brothers died, the family sold the woollens business and invested in real estate.
- Scope and Content
- File consists of architectural and technical drawings of a large seven storey building at 205 Richmond Street West, commissioned for the Gelber Brothers. It does not appear that the Gelber Brothers ever used the building for their own operations, but rather, leased it out to other garment manufacturers. Elevations, sections, a roof plan, floor plans, a block plan and detailing of the entrance are included. Also included are technical drawings of structural elements of the building as well as schedules for the construction of the building.
- Notes
- Due to the fragility of these drawings, the description is partially based on the item level descriptions compiled by Steve Speisman. Drawings are located in two separate rolls.
- This building was previously erroneously identified as the Gelber Building at 217-225 Richmond Street West.
- Physical Condition
- Some drawings are fragile and torn.
- Related Material
- See File 49-3-90 for the architectural drawings of a woollens warehouse for the Gelber Brothers at 355-359 Adelaide Street West.
- See File 49-2-7 for the architectural drawings of alterations and additions to the house of Mr. Louis Gelber as well as his biography.

- Samuel Harris was born in 1869, likely in Lithuania, and died in Toronto in 1936. His wife Sarah [Ruben] (1869-1940) had immigrated to Toronto from Svislocz (near Bialystock) in 1887. The couple lived for a time in the American Midwest before opening the Harris Delicatessen business in 1900 or 1901 at 233 Queen Street West in Toronto. In 1913 they moved the business across the street to 178 Queen Street West and re-opened as a new deli. Harris’ was the first Jewish delicatessen in Toronto. It was later converted by Mr. Harris from a deli to a tobacco store.
- The family had three sons: Samuel Aaron (1888-1982) born in Toronto, Dr. William (1895-1955) born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Dr. Louis [Jacob] (1906-1986) born in Toronto. Samuel and Sarah Harris were the grandparents of, among others, Judge Sydney M. Harris; Thelma B. Harris [m. Prof. Albert Rose]; and Sgt. Frederick B. Harris of the Queen’s Own Rifles, who was killed at Juno Beach on D-Day.
- Sarah Harris was the sister or half-sister of Abraham Rothbart (pharmacist). Samuel Harris was the founding chairman of the Toronto Hebrew Free School, a founder of the Toronto Free Loan Association, and a president of the Toronto Jewish Old Folks Home on Cecil Street.

- Administrative History
- The Noss family traces its origins to Russia/Ukraine. The patriarch, Avraham Noss, died after contracting typhus after being badly beaten in a pogrom. His wife, Toiba, died of either cholera, typhus, or influenza (accounts vary). They left behind four children: Raisa, Meyer, Joseph, and Moshe. The extended family took care of the four orphans but did not have enough food to feed them, so the three youngest were put in a Jewish orphanage. The eldest, Raisa, was too old but came every day to visit her brothers. One day, she arrived only to be told, "The missionaries took them away." The entire orphanage was brought to Canada. A Mr. Hershman from Toronto was involved as was a congregation of Christadelphians from Hamilton including a Mr. Farrar who owned a good-quality clothing store.
- Raisa remained in Russia, where she received an education from the Communist Party and became an engineer. Meyer kept in touch with his sister for as long as possible, but the two eventually lost touch.
- The Drazin family took in Meyer, the eldest brother, although the family never adopted him. Despite this, he changed his name to Drazin. Joseph ("Joe") was adopted but was returned to Children's Aid, where he went from foster home to foster home. He eventually took back the Noss family name. As for Moshe, he was adopted by Moses Levy and Marietta Steinert. Moshe's new parents changed his name to Edgar Steinert Levy. Edgar Levy is thus the same individual as Moshe Noss. Marietta was well-known in the Hamilton community, and a chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women was named after her.
