- The Welland Jewish Congregation, also referred to as the Welland Hebrew Congregation, originally served the Jewish community of Welland from a synagogue located at Burger and Grove Streets in the mid-1940s. By the mid-1950s, a new shul was under construction on Summit Street which would serve the community from that point onward.

- Administrative History
- Agudath Achim Congregation was located at 104 Catherine Street in Port Colborne and served the small but vibrant jewish community for many years. The synagogue was affiliated with the United Synagogues of America and the United Synagogue Education Commission.
- Sam Rudolph was born in 1927 and was an active member of the Agudath Achim Synagogue in Port Colborne. He was Secretary-Treasurer of the synagogue during the 1960s and early 1970s. His family owned a furntiure shop named Rudolph Furniture Ltd., opened the year of his birth, which he subsequently took over in his later years.

Sherman as a founding members of the School of Dental Medicine. - Dr. John A. Sherman (1 May 1901-30 Sept. 1982) graduated from the University of Toronto Dental School in 1924. John and Etta (née Taube) (6 Mar. 1908-22 July 1998) Sherman were among the group of dentists and their wives who started Alpha Omega Fraternity in Canada in 1921. Dr. Sherman was an international president of AO, and the founder of the Alpha Omega Foundation of Canada; he also served as its secretary-treasurer for many years. He was an exemplary leader in dentistry across the world and also served the profession as an inventor of dental equipment.
- John Sherman died Sept. 30, 1982 and Etta Sherman died July 22, 1998.

The records include minutes, notices, agendas, correspondence, memos to parents, memos to teachers and lists. The following committees and groups are documented: Scholarships and Bursaries; Personnel; Ways and Means; Growth; House; Building; Fiscal; Special Tuition Committee, Board of Jewish Education; Parents' Association; CHAT; Junior High School committee; Education committee; Special Education sub-committee; Mainstreaming committee; and Pre-school sub-committee. As well, special programs are highlighted. These include: the Cultural Enrichment program; Keren Ami; Avraham Nachum Memorial (1976-1980); and French Language Grants. - Administrative History
- In 1957, the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, a Conservative congregation, opened a congregational day school, the Foundation day school, consisting of a kindergarten and grades one to four. In 1961, eight other synagogues joined with Beth Tzedec to form the United Synagogue Day School. Beginning in 1965, the school offered instruction from Nursery to grade nine. From 1971 to 1973, the United Synagogue Day School also included a high school.
- The school was founded in order to provide students with a complete general and Judaic education. The language of instruction in the Judaic studies was Hebrew. The Judaic curriculum was presented within the framework of Conservative Judaism. However, the students were taught the traditional customs and observances. Within the confines of the school, students were expected to conform to traditional, religious behavior. Emphasis was placed on the diversity of Judaism and the importance of the re-establishment of the state of Israel.
- Each day included instruction in both Judaic and general studies, which were sometimes integrated together. Wherever possible, the general studies were approached from a Jewish perspective.

- Accession includes periodicals, a book, pamphlets, a certificate, clippings on Hadassah-WIZO and records relating to Youth Aliyah, Ajalon, Beth Tzedec and Palestine Lodge. As well, there is a 1925 University of Toronto yearbook. There are also several photographs taken in 1943 of the interior of the Canadian Jewish Congress Service Mens Club, at 44 St. George Street, Toronto (Community House). The artifact is a blue and white striped apron, ca. 1940s. -- 1 apron : textile, blue, red and white ; 91 cm in length. -- A blue and white striped apron with red initials embroidered in the center, white lining around the sleeves, and a blue and white striped belt for tying the apron around the waist. In fair condition. The apron is ripped at the side and slightly stained in some spots. Current location: PacArt, Box 27.

- Administrative History
- Al Cooper was a well-known Canadian comic book artist in the 1940s. He died on 7 Jan. 1986 at the age of 60. Mr. Cooper worked for Active Comics and was responsible for three of the original Canadian comic books: Commandos, Captain Red Thornton, and Scotty McDonald. He later became a partner and director of Maple Leaf Press, and in 1963 started his own printing company, Cooper Graphics and Associates. He served as president of the Downsview Lodge of B'nai Brith. He was also involved with the Northwood Country Club in Toronto.

This project was coordinated by Sylvia Klein initially through funding from a government Local Initiative Programme and then on a volunteer basis. Klein conducted this work under the guidance of Dr. Stephen Speisman, then Director of the Canadian Jewish Congress Central Region Archives. The records include oral histories on audio cassettes, transcripts, notes, reports, programmes, handbooks, and photographs.

- Administrative History
- Ralph Hyman (1906–1989) was a Toronto journalist who also played an active role in Jewish community organizations. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1906, the son of Russian parents, Sarah and Hyman Radutsky. The name was changed to Hyman in Scotland. Several years after his birth, the family immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, where they stayed until Ralph was seventeen. In 1924, they moved again, this time to Los Angeles. There, Ralph began his journalism career with the Glendale Times. In 1925, the family moved to Toronto, where Ralph got a job as a reporter for the Toronto Star. In 1928, he moved to the Mail and Empire. When the Mail and Empire merged with the Globe to form the Globe and Mail in 1936, he became a reporter and a political and feature writer. Ralph remained at the Globe and Mail unitl his retirement in 1971. A few months after his retirement, he returned to work as editorial consultant to the Canadian Jewish News. In 1972, he was appointed editor of that publication, a position he filled until his final retirement in 1980.
- Ralph Hyman was active in the Joint Community Relations Committee, the Toronto Newspaper Guild and the Toronto Men's Press Club. He was married to Edith Etigson, and they had two children: Gerald David and Roger Leslie.

Included are records related to B'nai Brith District No. 22, Eastern Canadian Council, and the Jacob Goldblatt Lodge; Canadian Jewish Congress, the Welland Hebrew Congregation; and other organizations such as the Canadian Council fo Christians and Jews and the National Council of Jewish Women. In addition, there are two objects: a B'nai B'rith badge and a plastic portfolio for the B'nai Brith Triennial Convention in 1965.

- Born in Montreal, Dr. Hyman O. Singer (1908-1981) graduated with an M.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1937. In 1940 he settled in Welland, Ontario. He was the first member of the Lord Melchett Lodge in St. Catharines and later became a member of the Jacob Goldblatt Lodge and served as its president, from 1949-1950. He served on the national executive of B'nai Brith, and as their vocational service commissioner. During his term as president of the Anshe Yosher Congregation (Welland Hebrew Congregation), a new synagogue and centre was built. He was a member of the National Executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and served as vice-chairman of the Educational and Cultural Committee. He was also the president of the medical staff of the Welland County General Hospital and Chief of the Department of General Practice. He died in St. Catharines in 1981.

Included are the pinkus, financial records, photographs, correspondence, meeting minutes, newsletters, membership records, inviations and programs. Also included is a 1918 photograph of a manual training class at either the King Edward School or the Manning Ave. School.
- Administrative History
- In the years following the 1st Zionist Congress held in Basle, Switzerland in 1897, Zionist organizations were established around the world.
- In Toronto one of the first Zionist societies to be founded was the B'nai Zion Association. This organization was established as a mutual benefit society in 1903. It provided sick, funeral and unemployment benefits to its members.
- However, its main purpose was the promotion of Zionism. It was involved in the dissemination of Zionist material, and sponsored lectures and meetings, in addition to raising funds to suppo~t the establishment of Jewish settlements in Palestine. It continued to perform these same activities following the establishment of the state of Israel.
- B'nai Zion has also been involved in local activities. It was active in anti-missionary efforts and also provided educational and cultural programming for children.

- Beatrice Collis (nee Florence) was married to Allan B. Collis, who owned a department store in Peterborough, Ontario called Allan B. Collis Limited. It was located on the west side of George Street, just north of Simcoe Street, and sold ladies' wear, mens' wear, and children's wear. Beatrice was active in the Peterborough Chapter of Hadassah. They had three children and later moved to Toronto.

Included are a minute book for the years 1962–1968, an attendance register for the years 1947–1951, a fifteenth anniversary souveneer program from September 1950, two copies of a program for an event featuring guest speaker Senator J. Bradette that was held on 10 January 1954, correspondence for the years 1956–1968, minutes from 1950–1968, and a constitution from 18 June 1936.
- The second manuscript group (MG3 B22) consists of material documenting Congregation B'nai Israel of Timmins. - Cantor Nathan Stolnitz was born in Vilna. He settled in Toronto in 1926. He founded the Ontario Cantors Association and was involved with Yivo, the Canada Jewish Congress, and Toronto's Jewish Public Library. He was also an author. Cantor Stolnitz died on 11 March 1969 while vacationing in Miami Beach. He was seventy-seven.

Records include a 40th Anniversary Jubilee Book produced for its fortieth anniversary event held at the Beth Haknesseth Hagodol (Anshei Ostrovtze) on 19 February 1950. In addtion, there is a booklet for a testimonial dinner held in honour of Joshua J. Barsht (arranged by the Ostrowcer Synagogue and Society), notes from the meetings of the subcommittee on 58 Cecil Street to discuss the future of the building, and a ticket for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.
- Also included are documents for the Leranbaum-Nisker family including a marriage certificate (1907), correspondence regarding verification of ages of the bride and groom for old age security (1953), a Canadian certificate of naturalization, a death certificate, and several obituaries.

- The Jewish Community Centre of London was originally affiliated with the United Way; however, today they form a part of the United Jewish Appeal London Federation. Previously, the Centre offered programmes for the Jewish community of London including day camps, Hebrew schools, seniors groups, and other recreational events. Today, these programmes are still being offered, but have grown substantially to accommodate the increasing demand.

- Records were kept by Goel Tzedec and later Beth Tzedec and were donated by the museum on behalf of Dr. Fred Weinberg
- Administrative History
- Goel Tzedec was established in 1883. It was originally an orthodox congregation founded by a group of recent immigrants from Lithuania. The first synagogue was situated in a room on Richmond and York Streets. Three years later they purchased and remodelled a building on University Avenue at Elm Street that was owned by the Methodist Church. Finally, in 1904 they hired an architect to construct a large building that was perfectly suited to their needs. In February of 1907, the building on University Avenue was dedicated and became the largest synagogue in Toronto, accommodating 1200 congregants.
- During the early decades of the twentieth century, Goel Tzedec became more ethnically mixed and established a religious school and women's auxiliary to help raise money and run special events. In 1925, the Congregation joined the Conservative Synagogue Movement and introduced changes to its services.
- After the Second World War, Goel Tzedec and its sister synagogue, Beth Hamidrash Hagadol amalgamated in September 1952 to form Beth Tzedec. The two congregations worked together to build a synagogue which was built in the North end of the city on Bathurst and was dedicated 9 December 1955. Rabbi Stuart E. Rosenberg served as Beth Tzedec's first Rabbi and J. Benjamin Friedberg as its Assistant Rabbi. The Chazzan at the time was Cantor Joseph Cooper. The synagogue adhered to the principles of the Conservative Movement and represents the largest synagogue in Toronto

- The Bergen-Belsen Association of Toronto was established in 1963 in order to preserve the memories of the victims of persecution at the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen. Moreover, they helped provide aide to the survivors and their families, offering financial, medical, and social assistance.

- Administrative History
- The Toronto Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1946 by a group of professional and business men interested in the study of Jewish history, literature, religion, philosophy, and society. The Society, which had no sponsoring organization or affiliation, met to listen to papers given by members or guest speakers.

- Scope and Content
- Accession consists of material documenting the life of Rabbi Tuvia Gutman Rapoport, including three photographs, a twenty-five-year anniversary booklet from Lublin, and a pamphlet titled "Religious Voice of Labor" from 1943. There are also photocopies of two ledger books. All of the textual records are in Yiddish, except for an English portion of the Voice of Labor booklet.
- Custodial History
- The material was donated by Rapoport's grandson, Dr. Abraham Rapoport. The photographs were duplicated and the the originals were returned to the donor.
- Administrative History
- Tuvia Gutman Rapoport came to Toronto from Poland between 1925 and 1928. He became a part-time, unpaid rabbi at the Apter Synagogue. He also worked as a shochet, a skill he learned in Poland on the advice of his son (the donor's father) before coming to Toronto. He died in 1955 at approximately 80 years of age.
