Admin History/Bio

The non-denominational and Zionist Toronto Hebrew Religious School (the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto ‘s precursor) was established in 1907 to provide Jewish children with a Jewish education based on Torah values. Originally situated on Simcoe Street, the school moved to Brunswick Avenue in 1925. As the Jewish population in the city grew, additional branches of the school were opened throughout the city. Although classes were originally taught five days a week in the evenings, the first day school opened in 1943 with 25 students. The Associated Hebrew Day School expanded in the late 1950s to include a junior high, and in the 1960s the Community Hebrew High School (now TannenbaumCHAT) opened. Dr. Alexander Brown began his career with Associated as the Principal of Shaarei Shomayim Hebrew School from 1942 to 1948. He later served as Principal at Associated.

Scope and Content

Series consists of textual and graphic material documenting Dr. Alexander Brown's involvement with the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto. Included are meeting notices, agendas and minutes, reports, speeches, articles, press releases, publications, correspondence, photographs, invitations, programmes, financial records, statistics, lists, constitutions, and educational resources.

Physical Condition

Many of the photographs have begun curling along the edges and have become stiff due to poor storage conditions. Some photographs also have had sections cut out of them.

Scope and Content

Series consists of photographs depicting the JIAS National region including inviduals and events. Pictured is a Hanukkah concert by a group of North African youth, general meetings; Moroccan immigrants arriving at the Montreal airport; other immigrants being greeted at the airport; new arrivals clearing through Immigration; a language class; a group of children at a seder; a rummage sale; and a Hanukkah dance held for North African (Moroccan?) immigrants.

Scope and Content

Photographs document John Glass' participation in military, political, and Jewish community organizations through the years. Those activities include serving overseas in the First World War, sailing to France to attend the Vimy Ridge Memorial Pilgrimage in 1936, and attending a reunion of the Osgoode Hall law class of 1919 and former Toronto City Council members. Jewish community events for organizations such as Israel Bonds meetings and Ambassador's Balls, B'Nai Brith, Canadian Hadassah, and the Jewish branch of the Canadian Legion are depicted.

There are panoramic views of large events hosted by the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Zionist Council, and the Jewish Branch of the Canadian Legion BESL (British Empire Service League).

Of note is an autographed portrait of Vladimir Jabotinski that was given to Glass on the occassion of Jabotinsky's 1926 speaking engagement in Toronto. Also of note is a photograph taken by a Toronto Star photographer that shows Canon Cody, president of the University of Toronto; Dr. Chaim Weitzman; Arthur Roebuck, minister of labour; John Glass; and Peter Keenan, minister of lands and forests.

Physical Condition

The panoramic photographs are in very fragile condition.

Scope and Content

This series includes 247 photographs of various sizes in black and white and colour. The photographs were created in various locations where the Rosebaum family lived including Poland, Italy, Palestine, Israel, and Toronto. In addition, there are photographs of the Rosenbaums vacations outside of Canada. The subjects in these photos are substantially family members and friends.
