Sam Stern left Canada for Israel in 1933. Upon his arrival, he joined the Degania Bet Kibbutz, where he stayed until 1934, when he moved to Tel Aviv and worked as a bookkeeper. In 1936, he helped found the Ginosar kibbutz. He was killed in 1939 while on guard duty.
Scope and Content
This item is a photograph of a group of young Torontonians from the Young Poale Zion Alliance, the precursor to Habonim, at Degania Bet kibbutz in Palestine. The man crouching in the centre is Sam (Shlomo) Stern. Standing over his left shoulder is Sol Berkofsky and over his right shoulder is [?] Kaplansky.

His aunt had previously been brought to Canada by Bill's father, Moishe Stern, before the Second World War. However, she fell ill while in Toronto and returned to Poland. The whole family pictured here were killed in the Holocaust. This photograph was taken in Lublin, Poland. His aunt's name was Chana Shternshis.

Admin History/Bio
Sam Stern left Canada for Israel in 1933. Upon his arrival, he joined the Degania Bet Kibbutz, where he stayed until 1934, when he moved to Tel Aviv and worked as a bookkeeper. In 1936, he helped found the Ginosar kibbutz. He was killed in 1939 while on guard duty.
Scope and Content
This item is a photograph of a group of young Torontonians from the Young Poale Zion Alliance, the precursor to Habonim, at Degania Bet kibbutz. Pictured are:

The following caption appears on verso: "23rd Anniversary of the Execution of the Soviet-Jewish Poets, Novelists and Artists. Tuesday, August 12, 1975. Youth Chapel, Beth Tzedec Synagogue, Toronto. Sam N. Filer, Chairman, Steering Committee for Soviet Jewry addressing the gathering." According to a Toronto Star article that appeared shortly after Filer's death, Filer was a judge and "legal icon" who had "helped persecuted Jewish citizens of the former Soviet Union."
