Custodial History

Most of the photographs were in the custody of Ted Winick, who sat on the Jewish Community Centre Archives Committee. They were donated to the OJA in 1982 and 1984.

Scope and Content

This sub-series contains photographs collected by the Jewish Community Centre Archives Committee. The photographs document the executive and general membership, special events, sporting groups and teams, and YM-YWHA owned camps and properties, including the construction and completion program of the northern branch. There are also a small amount of textual records and an architectural drawing, which has been kept in the file with the accompanying graphic images.

Arrangement of the photographs has been imposed by the archivist, as no original order existed when the records were acquired. The photos have been arranged into alphabetical files by function, where one exists, otherwise they have been grouped together by subject, event or individual. This approach was taken so that images pertaining to certain subjects or events could be easily accessed by the researcher. The images have been described at the file and item levels.

This file consists of two photographs of Judge Joseph Addison, who was a member of the YM-YWHA and a handball enthusiast. One photograph is of Addison holding a handball and is affixed to a board which says: Although he is no longer playing handball, he was noted for his long arms and legs and excellent condition. He has, and is devoting a lot of time and effort into promoting handball from coast to coast and is the present Commissioner of Handball. The second is a snapshot of him sitting in an office chair, consulting some papers.

This file consists of photographs taken at the annual meeting of the YM-YWHA, held at the northern branch. The meeting coincided with the dedication of the northern building.

Five of the images are of the head table, which included Mr. and Mrs. Sam Granatstein, Ellis and Fanny Shapiro, Gurston Allen, Alex Fisher and Max Swartz. One image is of Alex Fisher, Ellis I. Shapiro and Sam Granatstein unveiling the dedication plaque, one is of a boardroom dedication plaque presented to Sam Granatstein by H. Max Swartz and the remaining image is of people seated at the banquet tables. Also identified are Mr. and Mrs. David Andrews.

Above the headline and to the left, there is the following text: "Everyone worries about the culturally deprived child, yet many a mother, house-bound with toddlers, often thinks she's the most culturally deprived of all. A few years ago, the National Council of Jewish Women inaugurated a Higher Horizons program for just such women. Best of all, mothers can bring the kids along." According to a Toronto Star article that appeared shortly after Filer's death, Filer was a judge and "legal icon" who had "helped persecuted Jewish citizens of the former Soviet Union."

Item is a form letter from Sam Filer, chairman of the Steering Committee for Soviet Jewry. In the letter, which is intended for one or more rabbis, Filer informs the recipient that "the Toronto Jewish Community is planning to commemorate the 23rd Anniversary of the Execution of Soviet-Jewish Writers in 1952." Written near the top of the letter is a note: "Sent to Toronto Rabbis + Presidents of Synagogues."

Item is a programme for a community assembly titled the 23rd Anniversary of the Execution of the Soviet Jewish Poets, Novelists and Artists. The community assembly took place at the youth chapel at Beth Tzedec Synagogue (1700 Bathurst Street). The programme lists the following speakers: Sam Filer, chairman, Steering Committee for Soviet Jewry; Joseph B. Salsberg, chairman, Committee for Yiddish; Milton E. Harris, chairman, Canadian Jewish Congress, Central Region; Peretz Miransky, Yiddish poet; Lewis Feuer, professor of sociology and philosophy, University of Toronto; Israel Emiot, poet and essayist; and David I.
