Scope and Content

Accession consists of the records created and collected by Morton Bernholtz. Records document Morton Bernholtz's involvement within the Windsor Jewish community.

There are newspaper clippings about the Shaar Hashomayim Religious School in Windsor and specifically about Bernholtz's participation with the school, including as chair for several years. Programmes are included from some of the graduation exercises and bar mitzvah ceremonies held by the school. Included is a black-and-white photograph depicting members of the school's staff.

The records also include materials of the Windsor Jewish Community Council, for which Morton Bernholtz was president from 1966–1968. There is also a playbill, newspaper review, and a photograph from a production of Guys and Dolls put on by the Centre Theatre Workshop at the Jewish Community Centre in 1963. Both Morton Bernholtz and his wife Lottie played roles in the musical.

Administrative History

Morton Bernholtz was an active member of the Jewish community in Windsor, Ontario, where he held positrons as president of the Windsor Jewish Community Council and was chair of the Shaar Hashomayim Religious School. He was married to Lottie Bernholtz.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of records related to the life and communal service of Dr. Hyman O. Singer. Included are records related to B'nai Brith District No. 22, Eastern Canadian Council, and the Jacob Goldblatt Lodge; Canadian Jewish Congress, the Welland Hebrew Congregation; and other organizations such as the Canadian Council fo Christians and Jews and the National Council of Jewish Women. In addition, there are two objects: a B'nai B'rith badge and a plastic portfolio for the B'nai Brith Triennial Convention in 1965.

Administrative History

Born in Montreal, Dr. Hyman O. Singer (1908-1981) graduated with an M.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1937. In 1940 he settled in Welland, Ontario. He was the first member of the Lord Melchett Lodge in St. Catharines and later became a member of the Jacob Goldblatt Lodge and served as its president, from 1949-1950. He served on the national executive of B'nai Brith, and as their vocational service commissioner. During his term as president of the Anshe Yosher Congregation (Welland Hebrew Congregation), a new synagogue and centre was built. He was a member of the National Executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and served as vice-chairman of the Educational and Cultural Committee. He was also the president of the medical staff of the Welland County General Hospital and Chief of the Department of General Practice. He died in St. Catharines in 1981.

It includes: a YWHA ladies' basketball team card from 1925, originally issued by the Dominion Chocolate Company and featuring Bobbie Rosenfeld; the constitution for the Grand Order of Israel Benefit Society; a postcard of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care; a postcard of University Avenue in Toronto; and eight invitations to meetings held by Hadassah, the Hebrew Weston Sanatorium Club, the Toronto Hebrew Free School, Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Cloakmakers' Union

Harvey Frankel is a real estate agent for Royal LePage. He is an avid collector of Judaica who donated this material to the OJA.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of records from the Bureau of Jewish Education, including a pamphlet and memorandum. There are also bulletins from the Canadian Jewish Congress Youth Division Bulletins (1938, 1939) and several Yiddish journals including Bascheiden (1930), Heftn (1929), and two copies of In Gevirbl a monthly journal for literature and art (1930). Some of the topics and authors included in the 1938 Youth Division bulletin include: Editorial by Percy Kaplan, A Report on the Hamilton Conference of the Central Division of the Jewish Congress by Harry Steiner; The Youth Rally by Bertha Freed; The Youth Division of the United Jewish Welfare Fund by Boris Adelberg; Jewish Youth and Palestine by M. Kraicer; The Refugee Problem by Dr. James Parkes, (CBC broadcast 12. Nov. 1938).

The records were in the possession of Eiran Harris who was a member of the CJC National Archives committee and is an archivist at the Jewish Public Library in Montreal.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of programs for music concerts in Toronto including a childrens' Yiddish concert at Farband Folk Shule (1928), the Toronto Centennial Public and High School Concert (1934), the Jewish National Choir "Hazamir" (1939-1941), Hashomer Hatzair Ninth Annual Concert (1940), The Toronto Star Good Music Concert (1955) and a concert at Beth Tikvah Synagogue (1974). There is a newspaper clipping about a choir concert at Beth Sholom Synagogue (1950). Also included are pages from a book which display cameo photos of teachers at Peretz School, and the Toronto Arbeiter Ring Workmen's Circle School and Camp Committees (1927-1928). This material was collected by Cantor Louis Danto of Toronto.

Also included are photocopies of the 10th, 45th, and 50th Jubilee Books for the Agudas Hamishpocha (United Families) organization, and a photocopy of the Jewish Boys Club News with a story about Russell Gladstone's election as a Commissioner of the organization.

Administrative History

Agudas Hamishpocha was founded in Toronto in 1928 by members of the vast Rubinoff-Naftolin cousinhood, and was modeled after the mutual benefit societies, landsmanshaft organizations and similar associations founded by other local Jewish groups in the early twentieth century. As of 2013, this organization is still active.

Administrative History

The donor Sam Dime served in the Second World War. In 1947 Sam and his wife Dorothy Dime (née Stein) opened Dime's Drug Store at 568 Jarvis Street in Toronto. The pair operated the Jarvis Street institution for thirty-nine years and officially closed their store in 1986.

Accession includes twenty-nine photographs, most from the 1984 and 1985 Toronto Region Annual Meetings. Many are images of awards being given to outgoing and incoming presidents, and of speakers, with some group table shots.

Textual records include Toronto JIAS information and brochures, a history of the organization, meeting programs and invitations, a list of the 1969 board of directors, and a 1974 report "JIAS Background Information" by Joseph Kage. In addition there is a publicity brochure for Montreal and minutes of a JIAS-UJRA meeting in Montreal in 1975.

This accession consists of material documenting the donor's grandparents Dora and Bernard Coffler. It includes portraits of her grandparents and an exterior photograph of the Coffler Bedding Co., activities and fiftieth wedding celebration. This accession also includes: documents such as their passports, wedding certificate and identification cards; correspondence from David Croll; press clippings relating to their wedding and anniversary; an Ezras Noshem Society pin (1927); an Adath Israel Congregation Golden Jubilee Book and key chain (1952); and a Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary 25th Anniversary Year Book.

Administrative History

Bernard and Dora Coffler arrived in Canada from Roumania in 1900 and 1901 respectively. They met in 1902 and married on 21 May 1904 in Toronto. They reportedly were the first couple to be married on a Sunday in Toronto. They had three children: Myer (1905), Goldie (1910), and Sam (1914).

The Coffler's opened up a business called Coffler Bedding Co., which was located at 391 Parliament Street.

Dora Coffler was very active in two organizations, the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE) as well as the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary called the Ezras Noshem Society.

Bernard and Dora Coffler passed away in 1960 and 1971 respectively.

Accession consists of textural records, including an Israel postage stamp (1954); a US postage stamp (1932); and Philip Martin's membership cards to Central High School of Commerce Literary Society (1930–31), Central Commerce Association (1933–34), Central High School of Commerce Old Boys' and Girls' Association (1932–33), General Accountants Association (1933–34), Aleph Zadik Aleph of the B’nai Brith (1934), Kibitzers Klub, and the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild. The photo collection consists of studio portraits of various family members and a photograph of the exterior of United Clothing Store at Queen and Soho Streets in Toronto.

Administrative History

Philip Martin (5 Nov. 1913–20 Dec. 2002), the son of David Martin (b. ca. 1881, Romania) and Clara (née Herman) Martin (b. ca. 1884, Romania), was born in Ontario, Canada. In 1921, the Martin family lived in Toronto Ward 4, Kensington Market, at 59 Leonard Ave. Philip’s father David was a salesman for United Clothing Stores and his mother Clara was a homemaker who eventually worked as a saleslady (1931). In 1939, Philip married Dr. Laura (Lottie) (née Levine) Martin. Dr. Laura Levine graduated from University of Toronto medical school in 1938. She was one of 10 women to graduate in a class of 110 students. She continued her graduate studies, worked for a time at Windsor's Grace Hospital and eventually specialized in Dermatology. At one point, Phillip and Laura settled in Hamilton where Philip ran a successful sporting goods store. With an ambition to improve himself, Philip pursued a career in chiropractic medicine. He graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1966 and went on to run a private practice for 20 years. Philip and Laura returned to Toronto in 1970 and Philip joined the CMCC staff as a clinician in 1980. He went on to specialize in the field of nutrition.

Administrative History

Abe Magerman was the assistant manager for the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union for many years. He was married to Jennie (nee Shefsky) Magerman and had two children, Esther and Alfred. Esther attended Toronto Normal School and Harbord Collegiate while both Esther and Alfred attended the Borochov School and Kindergarten.

Jennie (nee Shefsky) Magerman was the daughter of Myer and Toba Rayzel (nee Nusynovitch) Shefsky. The Baycrest pins and coins once belonged to her.

The donor, Keith Ray, is the son of Esther (nee Magerman) Ray and Gerald (Jerry) Ray. Gerald Ray attended Vaughan Collegiate Institute and later went on to the University of Toronto for chemical engineering

The accession includes a oil painting of Henry Dworkin, the grandfather of the donor. The painting was created by Sam Soboloff, who owned a tobacco store on St. Clair Avenue West during the 1920s.

In addition, the accession consists of graphic and textual material including photographs of the Dworkin and Goldstick familes and the Dworkin travel business, correspondence written by the Dworkins, press clippings, an album of condolences on the death of Henry Dworkin in 1928, as well as other material. Item lists of the materials, compiled previously, are included in the box.

Custodial History

Item lists found in the boxes indicate that these records belonged to Ellen (Honey) Arthurs.

Administrative History

Harry William (Raxlen) Arthurs was born on May 9, 1935 in Toronto to Lewis and Ellen Honey Raxlen. He was adopted in 1942 by Leon Arthurs of Toronto, Honey's second husband. He is the grandson of Dorothy and Henry Dworkin. His sister Cinda was born on Sept. 1, 1942, also in Toronto. In 1958, Arthurs married Sheila Rubin. After their divorce, he remarried Penelope Milnes and together they had two sons, Joshua and Gideon.

Harry Arthurs received his B.A. in 1955 and his LL.B. in 1958, both from the University of Toronto. He received his Masters of Law in 1959 from Harvard and joined Osgoode Hall Law School's faculty in 1961. Between 1968 and 1970, Arthurs served as Associate Dean and then as Dean, from 1972 to 1977. Arthurs served as president and vice-chancellor of York University from 1985 to 1992.

Arthurs is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1982), an Officer of the Order of Canada (1989), a Member of the Order of Ontario (1995), and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy (2003). He was awarded the D.W. Mundell Medal in 1988, the first Killam Laureate in the Social Sciences in 2002, and the first Bora Laskin Award for Distinguished Contribution to Labour Law in 2003. His many publications include his book "Without the Law: Administrative Justice and Legal Pluralism in Nineteenth Century England."

Scope and Content

Accession consists of records relating to the life and weightlifting career of Bill Gryfe. The textual records are photocopies of correspondence, clippings, and certificates from a family album. The photographs are scanned copies from this same album and include images of Bill with various individuals and images of weightlifting teams and individuals that he had coached. There are two trophies: one is a Grand Order of Israel bowling award and one is an award presented to Bill in 1979 by the JCC for over fifty years of service. There is also a CD with Bill Gryfe's memoirs and some additional photographs of Bill at a young age and of him at various weightlifting events and on vacation.

Administrative History

Bill Gryfe was an early member of the YMHA. He began as a weightlifter and in 1931 became a barbell coach of the YMHA weightlifting team.

He coached at many national and international competitions such as the Canada games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, and the Maccabean Games. He also officiated and refereed at national and international competitions including the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

Throughout his life, Bill was devoted to the promotion of physical fitness and competitive weightlifting. He was a founder of the Ontario Weightlifting Association and its first president in 1968. He also organized the national-championship weightlifting competitions, held annually at the Canadian National Exhibition, an institution that had a distinct effect on his life from his earliest years when it was first established by Bill Oliphant in 1935. Over the years, Bill Gryfe received numerous awards and citations, including a nomination for the Order of Canada in 1982. Bill died in 2005 at the age of ninety-five.

Accession consists of copies of electronic copies of photographs, postcards and telegrams as well as newsclippings, a video and a DVD documenting the career of Sam Shapiro in the RCAF and his time as a Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft 3 in Poland.

Administrative History

Sam Shapiro enlisted as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1940. He received his wings in Brantford and was sent overseas in April 1941 as a sergeant pilot. He was in Squadron ten and flew eight successful missions before his plane was shot down over Holland in August 1941, killing two of the crew.

Shapiro was captured by German forces on 17 August 1941 and was taken to Stalag Luft 3 camp in Poland, where the "Great Escape" took place. Shapiro was not part of the breakout, but did help dig the tunnel that allowed seventy-six of his fellow prisoners to escape.

While a Prisoner of War, Shapiro was promoted to warrant officer. He was liberated on 16 April 1945 and arrived in England five days later. Shortly after arriving home in 1945, Shapiro received the YMCA sports badge for his conduct in the POW camp and the Canadian Volunteer Service medal. He married his fiance Geraldine Perlman in 1945.

Scope and Content

This accession consists of textual and graphic records relating to the personal and professional lives of Samuel and Gertrude Kronick. The records include correspondence, congratualtory cards and letters, family photographs, naturalizaton, birth and marriage records, plaques and a Soboloff oil painting, commissioned by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, the Toronto Hebrew Free Loan and possibly the Canadian Jewish Congress. Of note, is a photograph of Sam Kronick which was taken for the UJA campaign in 1944 as well as the accompanying flyer in which his photograph appeared.

Administrative History

Samuel Kronick was born near Kovno, Lithuania in 1880. In 1900 he moved to London, England for nine monthes before immigrating to the United States in 1901. He lived in Chicago and Minneapolis for a short time, working as a Singer sewing machine salesman. The following year he moved to Toronto and started the American Hat Company with his brother-in-law Max Manson.

In 1912, he married Gertrude Willinsky, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Willinsky. They had four children together: Miriam, Moses, Leah and Joseph.

Samuel was one of the founding members of the Federation of Jewish Philanthroipies. He founded the Hebrew Free Loan Association and was involved with the Brunswick Avenue Talmud Torah, the Zionist Organization, the Jewish Old Folks' Home, Mount Sinai Hospital, Folks Farein and the United Jewish Welfare Fund. Gertrude was involved with the Rose chapter of Hadassah-WIZO.

In 1933, the Kronicks made aliyah to Israel, and Samuel retired from the millinary business upon his return in 1934. He passed away in 1962 and Gertrude passed away in the mid-1980s.

Joe Kronick is the son of Samuel and Gertrude.

This accession consists of ten photo albums documenting several Purim balls thrown by Tamara Weinreich. The money raised at the parties went towards the Anne Frank Foundation, which supported a kibbutz school for needy children in Israel. The balls took place at several synagogues in Toronto, such as Beth Tikvah, Beth Torah, and Beth David.

The photographs are of the guests in costume.

Administrative History

Tamara Weinreich (née Buchman) was born in Warsaw, Poland on 1 June 1930. She was the eldest child of Israel and Pola Buchman. She worked as an arts and crafts director at Baycrest during the 1960s and 1970s and was an artist by profession. She died on 20 Jan 2017.

This accession consists of electronic copies of original textual records, documenting the Jewish community of Owen Sound, Ontario. The records include a community draw ticket (1959); the Canadian Jewish Congress Educational Department code of practice, for discussion at the sixth regional conference on Jewish education (1957); a page from a donation ledger for the United Palestine Appeal (1948); the Beth Ezekiel Synagogue historic plaquing program book (1991); and an employment contract between the Synagogue and Rabbi H. Lasher (1962).

Custodial History

Accession consists of scanned copies of material reflecting Lee Jourard's involvement in theatre in the Belleville area. There are eight theatre programmes, most of them of plays produced by the Belleville Theatre Guild, in which Jourard was a cast member and/or on the backstage crew. The records also include scanned newspaper clippings about Jourard's talks and plays (including photographs), and seven scanned copy photographs of Jourard.

Administrative History

Entertainer Lee Jourard is well-known in the city of Belleville for his support of the arts and his community involvement. He worked as a broadcaster for CJBQ radio, was the first Community Programs Director at the Cablevue 4 television station, and was a founding member of Belleville's Cultural Awards Committee and the Harbour Improvement Committee. He is a longtime member of the Belleville Theatre Guild, having been in the cast and crew of many of its producations from the 1950s through the 1990s. Jourard is also a member of the Bay of Quinte Power Squadron and the Moira River Conservation Authority Advisory Board. In 2007 he was named Senior of the Year in the City of Belleville.

This accession consists of material documenting the donor's family, particularly her father, Nathan Rivelis. The items include a vest and hat worn by her father during the late 1950s as part of the Lion's Club. It also consists of an oral history of her father conducted in 1983; his school primer and English reader; photographs of the business and Hebrew classes; certificates; and, finally, newspaper clippings.

Administrative History

The Rivelis family owned a large clothing store in North Bay from 1926 until 1986 called Rivelis. They sold men's and women's mid-range clothing and became famous in town for their annual sale held on 16 November. The business grew from a small family-run store to a large department store with twelve employees.

In addition to running the business, Nate Rivelis was also involved in the local Lion's Club and was the president of this organization from 1957-1958. He was the only Jewish member at that time. In addition, he also served as the president of the Hebrew school during the 1940s.

This accession consists of a vinyl recording of Cantor Louis Danto entitled Songs of My People and one by the Stan Hiltz Orchestra entitled Kosher Style. Danto's recording was produced by Sound Path Productions Ltd. in Oakville, Ontario and was presented by the Committee for Yiddish of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Central Region. The Hiltz recording was self-produced and packaged by World Records of Oshawa, Ontario. The group consisted of Stan Hiltz, Leonard Shacter, Arnie Wiskin, Lawrence Sereda, Len Lytwyn, Marty Hiltz, Danny Colomby, and Cantor Louis Danto.

This accession consists of records documenting the Posluns family of Toronto. They include two scanned copies of photographs and one original, depicting various members of the Posluns family such as the family patriarch, Yosef ben Abraham and a copy photograph of the Tip Top Tailors building under construction in 1928.

The textual records consist of one electronic copy of a short history of the Posluns family, taken from Samuel Bernstein's biography, as well as a copy of a YMHA bulletin cover page from June 15, 1934, featuring a message from the president, Louis Posluns.

Administrative History

Lottie Glass is the daughter of Rabbi Manfred Levison and Rega (née Wolf) Levison. The Glass family including Lottie's siblings Miriam (m. Rabovsky) and Benny moved to Canada in 1947. They emigrated from China where they had been living since 1939. In Canada, the family first settled in Medicine Hat, Alberta and moved to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1949. In 1950 they settled in Ontario first moving to Welland and then Owen Sound (1950-1952). In the summer of 1952, the family moved to Toronto and lived on Palmerston Avenue. Miriam and her husband Mike Rabovsky remained in Owen Sound. In 1954 after the death of his wife Rega, Rabbi Levison travelled to the United States in search of work and eventually settled in Brooklyn, New York.

Administrative History

Joe Roseman's parents, Bessie Baranski and David Roseman, came to Canada separately from Poland in 1918. Bessie had siblings already in Ontario: her sister Channah and brother-in-law Charles Glass, living in Kitchener at the time; brother Gordon; and brother Joe. All three brothers worked in second hand furniture and eventually switched to new furniture. They Anglicized the family name from Baranski to Brown.

Settling in Kitchener by 1920, David Roseman had a job running the tuck shop at McBrine Baggage. By 1922 he had joined his brother-in-law Charles Glass in his store, Central Furniture on King Street East. David's wife Bessie helped deliver furniture until her brother Joe came on. Joe died in 1945 after being hit by a car in front of the store.

David and Bessie had five children: Samuel, Esther (who married Sam Moldaver), Max, Ruth (married Henry Katz of Hamilton), and Joe. Samuel served and was killed in action in the Second World War. Joe began working at the furniture business in his second year of high school (1938) and stayed there until 1962 with his father retired and the business was sold. After this, Joe's brother Max opened his own store in Brantford; Joe opened one in Stratford; and Sam remained in Kitchener, opening his own small furniture store next to the original Central Furniture.
