Biography
Reuben Slonim was born on in Winnipeg in 1914 and ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York in 1937. That year, he became Canada’s first Canadian-born rabbi when he was hired by the McCaul Street Synagogue in downtown Toronto. After it merged with Goel Tzedec to become the Beth Tzedec Congregation, Rabbi Slonim served at the new Beth Tzedec for one year. He then served for twenty-three years as rabbi of Beth Habonim on Glen Park Avenue.
Slonim also worked as a jounalist and associate editor of the Toronto Telegram and was known for his outspoken views on the Arab-Israeli conflict and Zionism.
He married Rita Short, and they had a daughter named Rena. Rabbi Reuben Slonim died on 20 January 2000 at the age of eight-five.

The Apter Synagogue was formed by a group of people who came to Toronto from the area of Opatow (Apt) in Poland around the turn of the century. They first established a small synagogue on Centre Avenue near Dundas Street in the Ward. In 1918, in anticipation of more Apter immigrants coming to Toronto after the First World War, the synagogue was sold and a larger one purchased on Beverley Street. Scope and Content
Accession consists of a document printed and distributed by the Canadian Nationalist Party titled "The Sign of Satan: If You Want to Save Canada from Communism Never Vote for a Freemason or a Jew!" According to the second page of the document, the main text consists of "a reprint of Chapter VIII taken from Charles G. Finney's work on Freemasonry."
Rev. Finney's articles on Freemasonry were originally published in the Independent between April and July 1868. Since Rev. Finney died in 1875, it is impossible he consented to the Canadian Nationalist Party reprinting his articles. Rather, the Canadian Nationalist Party appears to have chosen the title, reprinted one of Rev. Finney's articles, and added several quotes near the end purporting to show that "Freemasonry is Jewish."
Administrative History
The Canadian Nationalist Party was led by William Whittaker and based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In October 1934, it merged with the Parti National Social Chrétien/Christian National Socialist Party. It is not to be confused with the Nationalist Party in Canada (founded 1977), nor is it to be confused with the Canadian Nationalist Party (founded 2017).
Use Conditions
