Accession consists of ten deeds of sale for a parcel of land in Toronto at 909 Dundas Street West (119 Arthur Street) and Strachan Sreet (Bellwoods Avenue) from 1883 to 1922. The first transaction was between Joseph Phillips and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Phillips, and James Crocker. The last documents, both of which are dated June 5, 1922, record the sale of the land from W. T. O. Parry and Wexler Woolfe to Samuel Dvoretsky and Samuel Dvoretsky to W. T. O. Parry.

Nathan Rosenberg was the owner of several ladies' and children's clothing stores in downtown Toronto. Nathan, along with his brother Simon, were the co-owners of the Dainty Dress Company at 317 Adelaide West. He also owned the Exclusive Ladies Garment Company at 221 Richmond Street and was the president of the Exclusive Children's Cloak Company, which was headquartered at 44 York Street.

File consists of various floor plans, sections and elevation drawings of a large three storey clothing store for Mr. Nathan Rosenberg on Dundas Street West. In 1925, Nathan Rosenberg owned Campbell Women's Wear, located at 124 & 130 Dundas St. West. These may be the drawings for this building.

Mr. Harry Trachter was the owner of a creamery and grocery store at 800 Dundas St. West, where he also resided. In 1934, the building was badly damaged by fire. Mr. Trachter died in 1982.
Scope and Content
File consists of architectural drawings of stores (one of which was Trachter's Groceteria), an apartment and an office, located on the northwest corner of Dundas St. and Euclid Avenue. The first floor consisted of two stores, and the second floor consisted of a four bedroom dwelling and an office. Floor plans and a sketch of the building exterior are included.

Landmarks

The Apter Synagogue was formed by a group of people who came to Toronto from the area of Opatow (Apt) in Poland around the turn of the century. They first established a small synagogue on Centre Avenue near Dundas Street in the Ward. In 1918, in anticipation of more Apter immigrants coming to Toronto after the First World War, the synagogue was sold and a larger one purchased on Beverley Street. Both the synagogue members and the Apter Friendly Society met there.

Accession consists of graphic materials documenting the family history of Roz Tepperman English. The records include photos relating to her grandmother Miril Kruger Kirshbaum, her involvement with the Cloakmakers Union, a special Mother’s Day photo as part of a 1939 women’s group event, snapshots in front of Miril and her husband Joseph Kirshbaum’s grocery store at 1044 Dundas Street and later at 1091 St. Clair Avenue West, and Joseph Kirshbaum in front of Goodbaum’s Grocery store at 1001 Eglinton Avenue West. Additional photos include a Toronto Evening Telegram photo of the Tepperman family gathered at their 55 Oxford Street home for a special welcome for returning Second World War veterans, Jack and Max Tepperman, 1945; a Sainthill-Levine annual employee holiday party; B’nai Brith York Chapter chair Lily Tepperman at meetings and a special presentation at the Noshery; and a cast photo of Roz English from a Bathurst Heights fundraising show.
Administrative History
Roz English (née Tepperman) was born in Toronto in 1950. Her mother, Lily Tepperman (née Kirshbaum) also of Toronto, was born in 1921. Lily’s younger brother was Murray Kirsh. They were the children of Polish immigrants Miril Kruger Kirshbaum (b. ca. 1895) and Joseph Kirshbaum (b. ca. 1895) both of Ostrowiec. Roz’s father, Jack Tepperman, was born in Toronto (1918-1980) and was the son of Yetta (Yochevet) Isser Tepperman (ca. 1880-1960) and Shaye Tepperman (ca. 1880-1960), both immigrants from Ivansk (Iwaniska), Poland. Jack was the youngest boy of eight children. His siblings were Morris, Harry, Rose, Albert, Rae, Max, and Pauline.
Miril Kruger Kirshbaum was a member of the Toronto Cloakmakers Union. The union was established in 1909 as an organized effort to assist and protect workers in the women's garment industry. Two years later they became affiliated with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) in Toronto and became Local 14. Today they are the oldest local still in existence and are now called Unite Here Canada.
Later, Miril and her husband Joseph opened grocery shops in Toronto including the ones at 1004 Dundas Street and 1091 Street Clair Avenue West. Eventually they moved north of Eglinton where Joseph found employment at Birnbaum’s grocery store.
Roz’s grandparents are presumed to have lived above their shop at 1044 Dundas St. and moved to a home on Wynette with their daughter Lily, son-in-law Jack, and grandchildren Sharon (b. 1945) and Roz. The home was close to the new location of their grocery store on St. Clair Avenue West. When the Shaarei Shomayim congregation moved north of Eglinton to Glencairn and Bathurst, the family followed and moved to an apartment located at 2900 Bathurst Street.
Jack Tepperman and his brothers Albert and Max were employed as tailors for the Sainthill-Levine Company, Canadian manufacturers of uniforms. Jack married Lilly Kirshbaum in 1943. Lily was a lifelong community worker involved in groups such as B’nai Brith York Chapter.
Roz Tepperman, a graduate of Bathurst Heights and the University of Toronto, married her husband, Howard English, in 1971. She was active on the U of T campus in groups such as Students for Israel and volunteered on campus for Hillel and their first Monday night dinner club. Later she worked at the Jewish Public Library located on Glen Park at Glenmount and The Valley (located at 7015 Leslie Street) as a pre-school teacher. Roz and Howard have four children, Nisa, Shira, Aaron and Naomi.

Accession consists of material primarily documenting kosher meat scandals and strikes in Toronto in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the Kehilla (Toronto Rabbinical Board). There are complete pages of some documents and portions of others. The documents are flyers (public notices) in Yiddish (with some Hebrew in religious context and quotations) to do with a scandal or several scandals in which it became clear a number of butchers were operating outside Rabbinical Board supervision and therefore selling (assumed to be) treif meat to Toronto Jews. Secondary scandal with Rabbi Yehuda Leib Graubart, who allegedly split off from the Rabbinical Board with six butchers to do business outside the union, with wholesalers, and gaining more money than union butchers and the rabbis working with them. Another thread relates to a strike for cheaper meat, including meetings of women picketers, and then for better conditions for local butchers. The flyers mostly fall between 1920-1940. All are from Toronto. Lists of local butchers’ shops with addresses and names are included.
Additional flyers cover Communist protests and protest meetings against German fascism and pogroms, specifically Hitler's government's prosecution of the Communist Party of Germany related to the Reichstag fire. Also included are a 1953 flyer for the tenth anniversary commemoration of the Latvian-Lithuanian Jews’ annihilation, and an open letter to Rabbi Abraham Aaron Price regarding his title.
Custodial History
There is no information on the acquisition of this material. However, retrieved from the original package in which the material was lodged was a note "Kashruth fliers from E. Miller" or Mitler.
