- Lipman Walters was from Holland. The family name was originally Wolters.
- His father had died of wounds fighting in the Dutch army against Napoleon. His mother was given the choice of a widow's pension or a lump sum. She took the latter and settled in Philadelphia with 5 children.
- Lipman later settled in Toronto where he was an early member of Holy Blossom. He married Marianne Segaar.
