Scope and Content
Accession consists of the following records: photographs, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, invitations, postcards, marriage records, immigration documents, receipts, correspondence and a 1841 edition of The Jewish Chronicle.
The photographs depict members of the Fine family, and in particular Albert Fine's dry goods store; Alpha Sigma - Phi Delta Epsilon fraternity, University of Toronto in 1934; members of the Gardstein family, including a class picture with Pearl and David Gardstein, and several photographs taken at the Gardstein farm.
Also here are several Jewish New Year greeting cards that are three dimensional pop-up cards and some birthday cards. This style of three dimensional card was painted by the Hebrew Publishing Company of New York between 1903 and 1912 and then sent to Germany to be printed.
Accession also Includes marriage certificates for Albert Fine and Jennie Brinn and for Rosie Black and Max Gardstein. There are naturalization papers, death records and early correspondence dating from 1887

Scope and Content
Accession consists of records that document the Greisman, Brenzel and Mehr families. As well, the photographs record significant members and associations within the Toronto Jewish community. The following types of records are included: photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, a Bishop Strachan exercise book, and a Holy Blossom certificate of confirmation for Ethel H. Mehr in 1916.

Sally Greisman Brenzel collected and stored these records until the time of donation to the Ontario Jewish Archives in 1988
Administrative History
Sally Greisman married Larry Brenzel on June 25, 1950 at Goel Tzedec Synagogue. She and her husband are active members of the Jewish and arts communities in Toronto.
Sally Brenzel was appointed to the Ontario Arts Council in 1998. She is an active volunteer and fundraiser for a variety of arts organizations including the Royal Ontario Museum, where she has held several senior volunteer positions and where she is an Honorary Trustee. Ms. Brenzel’s volunteer service also includes working on fund raising campaigns of the Canadian Cancer Society, United Jewish Appeal, and the Ontario Heart Fund

Accession consists of photographs and records relating to the Fox, Goldberg, and Dennis families, with the bulk of the materials relating to Joseph H. Fox, a storekeeper in Orillia and Toronto. Accession includes a photograph of the Canadian Hebrew Benevolent Society picnic at Port Dalhousie Park on July 23, 1939. Documents include translations in English of birth registrations for Chaim Fuchs and Rose Bleich, an affadavit by a police magistrate in Orillia, Ontario for Joseph Fox, deed of sale for a seat in the University Avenue Synagogue (Goel Tzedec) by Z. Shore to Joseph Fox, and a biography of Joseph Fox by his grandson Melville Goldberg. In addition there is a military passport in German for Chaim Frichs.

Accession consists of records created by Goel Tzedec Congregation. Included are microfiche of minutes and ledgers, a copy of a Seder T'filas Yisroel donated to Goel Tzedec by Chaim Smith in 1917, and a class photograph for the Farband Shule taken in the late 1930s.
Included in the photograph are Hershel Fogle, Rivkah G, Fayge Weingarten, Sarah Gingold, Aaron Hermaub, Shangle Atkin, Lil Newman, Etle Brody, Rochel Blumenshtein, Chava Smith, Sora Zweig, Yaacov Drexler, Malka, Yaacov Rosenzweig, Aaron Shnipper, Klumann, Shore, Aaron Folk and the teachers Fogle, Leah Lander, Shopsai Rappaport, Moishe Rigelhaupt, and Dr. Isaiah Rabinowich

Administrative History
Goel Tzedec was established in 1883. It was originally an orthodox congregation founded by a group of recent immigrants from Lithuania. The first synagogue was situated in a room on Richmond and York Streets. Three years later they purchased and remodelled a building on University Avenue at Elm Street that was owned by the Methodist Church. Finally, in 1904 they hired an architect to construct a large building that was perfectly suited to their needs. In February of 1907, the building on University Avenue was dedicated and became the largest synagogue in Toronto, accommodating 1200 congregants.
During the early decades of the twentieth century, Goel Tzedec became more ethnically mixed and established a religious school and women's auxiliary to help raise money and run special events. In 1925, the Congregation joined the Conservative Synagogue Movement and introduced changes to its services.
After the Second World War, Goel Tzedec and its sister synagogue, Beth Hamidrash Hagadol amalgamated in September 1952 to form Beth Tzedec. The two congregations worked together to build a synagogue which was built in the North end of the city on Bathurst and was dedicated 9 December 1955. Rabbi Stuart E. Rosenberg served as Beth Tzedec's first Rabbi and J. Benjamin Friedberg as its Assistant Rabbi. The Chazzan at the time was Cantor Joseph Cooper. The synagogue adhered to the principles of the Conservative Movement and represents the largest synagogue in Toronto

Accession consists of documents concerning the application of Menachem Kernerman of Berdichev to live in Warsaw (1891-1892), and a 1912 London England birth certificate for Aaron Kernerman, son of Philip and Rebecca Kernerman. There are also immigration documents for the Kemerman family from Liverpool to Quebec City in 1914, a Certificate of Naturalization for Philip (1931) and a Certificate of Eligibility for Naturalization of Women of Foreign Birth for Rebecca (1934). Also included are University of Toronto Junior Matriculation reports for Morris Kernerman (1918-1920), a 1943 deed of land for cemetery plots for Philip and his wife in the McCaul Street Cemetery (Congregation Beth Medresh Hagodol Chevra Thilim), and two telegrams congratulating Philip and Rebecca on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948.

Accession consists of photographs which include portraits and group photos taken in Vilna, Poland, Montreal, Quebec, and New York. Many are photo postcards. Identified individuals include Miriam and Isadore Zelker, Benjamin and Dora Zelker and Dr. Serge Koussevitzky. In addition there is a United States Certificate of Citizenship issued to Isadore Zelker by the Supreme Court in Bronx, New York (1930), a Polish passport belonging to Mary Dreazen of Vilno (1921), and her United States States Certificate of Naturalization issued in New York in 1927. Lastly there is an undated Western Union Telegram congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Dreazen of New York on their marriage.

Accession consists of personal documents of Kate Risidore Devor including registration of her birth in 1895 in London, England; immigration inspection card issued at the Port of Quebec (1912); New York State marriage certificate for Harry Devor and Kate Risidore of St. Catharines, Ontario, married in 1914 in Niagara Falls, and their ketubah (Hebrew marriage certificate). As well, there is a newspaper clipping from the St. Catherines Standard of a speech by her son John, correspondence from two of her sons, Sydney and John serving in the military, and clippings and messages of condolence on the death of her son David while fighting in Italy (1944). These include cards and letters from King George of England, George Drew of Ontario, the Toronto War Memorial Committee, and Sam Bronfman, president of Canadian Jewish Congress. Finally there is Jewish National Fund correspondence documenting the planting of a tree by St. Catherines Hadassah in honour of Kate (1933), and a number of trees by Kate in memory of her brother and son (1966).

Four sons of Kate and William Harry Devor served in the Canadian forces during the Second World War - David, Berko, John, and Sydney.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of clippings, correspondence, invitatations and photographs reflecting the personal life and community contributions of H. Max Swartz. The records include honours, photocopied documents, newsletters, family snapshots and portraits, Swartz's notary public stamp and a small plaque from JIAS in appreciation of Swartz's contribution as president. There are also three scrapbooks containing letters, clippings and photographs.

Administrative History
H. Max Swartz (1900-1989) was born and raised in Toronto, where he worked for decades as a lawyer and was a well-known leader in the community. Swartz studied law at Osgoode Hall and subsequently worked in the law firm of Nathan Phillips for six years and also helped plan Phillips's mayoral campaigns. Swartz was in his early twenties when both his parents died, and he supported his eight younger siblings, an aunt and his grandmother. Eventually he established his own law firm. He was also elected president of the Reading Law Club of the Upper Canada Law Societ (a Jewish law club). Swartz was made a member of the King's Counsel in 1948. He married Seraphine (Serry) Marshack in 1931 and together they had two sons, Paul and Myron.
Swartz's community work started early and never flagged. In 1919, he was one of the founders of the YM-YWHA and he served on its board of directors as president, chairman and then honourary vice president. He was a board member of the United Jewish Welfare Fund and Toronto Jewish Congress, a national executive member of Canadian Jewish Congress, and president of Toronto JIAS (Jewish Immigrant Aid Services) in 1951-1952. In the 1980s, the Jewish Community Centre set up the H. Max Swartz Leadership Development Fund in his honour, and Swartz received a commendation from the mayor of Toronto for his dedication to the preservation of historic buildings, including the Gooderham flatiron building and others in the St. Lawrence Market area of the city. H. Max Swartz died at the age of 88 in 1989.

Accession consists of ten deeds of sale for a parcel of land in Toronto at 909 Dundas Street West (119 Arthur Street) and Strachan Sreet (Bellwoods Avenue) from 1883 to 1922. The first transaction was between Joseph Phillips and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Phillips, and James Crocker. The last documents, both of which are dated June 5, 1922, record the sale of the land from W. T. O. Parry and Wexler Woolfe to Samuel Dvoretsky and Samuel Dvoretsky to W. T. O. Parry.

Also incuded are United Jewish Welfare Fund Board of Directors meeting minutes, and Israel and the Jewish World newsletters (2000-2004).
Also included are four scrapbooks documenting related groups such as the Balfour Club of Young Judaea (1934-1941); Hadassah-WIZO (1941); United Palestine Appeal (1942, 1945) and the Zionist Organization of Canada (1953-1954, 1958).
Custodial History
These records appear to have originated from the Toronto Zionist Council offices on Marlee Ave., but could in fact, be the provenance of the Zionist Organization of Canada, Central Region.

Administrative History
Abraham Rhinewine (1887-1932) was born in Poland and immigrated to London, England in 1902, at the age of 15. There he met his wife, Annie and together they immigrated to Toronto in 1907. They had two (possibley three) children, Shulamith and Avivah (Bakerspigel). Abraham had a sister named Sarah, who was involved with UNRAA after the Second World War and was the Assistant Director of Jewish Family and Child Services for many years. Abraham was a prominent scholar and the editor of the Toronto Daily Hebrew Journal.

Accession consists of material documenting the life and career of Rabbi Ernest Klein. Records include personal as well as professional correspondence, certificates, newspaper clippings and book reviews, a marriage register, bar mitzvah invitations, and Klein's birth certificate.
Administrative History
Ernest Klein (1899-1983) was born in Szatmar, Hungary on 26 July 1899. He studied at the University of Vienna and served as a rabbi in several countries including Czechoslovakia, Romania, and France. The Second World War brought great hardship for Klein, who survived Auschwitz and Dachau (his wife and son were killed in Czechoslovakia just before the war). After the War, Klein came to Canada, where he became rabbi of Congregation Beth Yitshak in Toronto. A polyglot and a scholar, Klein wrote three etymological dictionaries, the most famous of which was his Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the English Language (1966-67). For his work, he received honourary degrees from McMaster University and the University of Guelph in 1977 and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1978. He passed away on 4 February 1983.

The accession consists of twenty-five photographs documenting the family of Len Berger.
Administrative History
Leonard was born in Toronto on March 3, 1923 to Samuel and Rebecca (nee Rottenberg) Berger. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a bomber during the Second World War and married Goldie Fine in 1950. He ran a business out of the their house on Wigan Crescent.
His paternal grandparents were Myer and Bertha (nee Lubnitsky) Berger. They were from Romania and arrived in Canada around 1904. The couple had four children: Samuel, Minnie (m. Lieberman), Ann (m. Bochner) and Esther (m. Bernard).
Samuel married Rebecca Rottenberg at Beth Jacob synagogue on Henry Street on 30 December 1917. Around that time the couple both worked in factories, he as a cutter and she as an operator. They resided at 102 Oxford Street. He later enlisted in the Canadian military on 4 September 1918. The couple had two children: Beatrice and Leonard.
Rebecca Rottenberg's parents were Lazar (Louis) and Bertha (nee Appell) Rottenberg. They came from Russia around 1896 and resided at112 Chestnut Street in 1901. He worked as a cloak operator.They moved to 90 Denison Street around 1910, where he worked out of his house. The family lived there for many years and raised a large family in that home. Their ten children included: Goldie, Lena, Rebecca (Becky), Louis, Harry, Pearl, Molly (Mary), Samuel, Sarah (Shirley) and Rosie.

Scope and Content
This accession consists of glass jars from the Toronto Hebrew Butter Dealers association, and two costumes made by the C.E. Ward Co. Both costumes are identical in design but one is black with yellow embroidery and one is red with yellow embroidery. Their design is a long jacket with buttons on the back and two pant legs with elastics at the top to hold them in place. In the centre of the jacket is a moose surrounded by a circle/sun shape. It is speculated that these costumes were used at the Standard Theatre, a Yiddish theatre, at Spadina Ave. and Dundas St. W., but this is not certain.
Also included are three glass jars from the Toronto Hebrew Butter Dealers Association. The jars are 7 cm in diam. x 10 cm in height and have a star of david, the name of the company and the price of the jar (5 cents) embossed on it.
Administrative History
C.E. Ward Co. is a clothing company founded in 1891 which specializes in uniforms and costumes for lodges, bands, and religious organizations. Based in New London, Ohio, the founder of the company was Clyde E. Ward. The company still operates under the name New London Regalia.

This accession consists of records related to the activities of the Pullan and Smith families of Toronto and the Moses family of Sudbury. The records consist of several ledger books including the minutes of the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue in Sudbury, a financial ledger book belonging to the Cooperative Board of Jewish Charities, as well as the Jewish Ladies' Aid Society account book. Also included is the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue's constitution and by-laws. There are also receipts, programs, stationary and other items documenting Jewish organizations in Toronto, such as the Menorah Society, the Associated Hebrew Schools, Holy Blossom Temple, and the Jewish Old Folks' Home, and two files of vital records related to the Rosen and Dubrofsky families.
In addition, there are several photographs of particular note, such as four photographs of the Jewish orphanage, both during the period at 218 Simcoe Street and later on Annette Street. There are also two early photographs of the U of T Menorah Society executive.

This accession consists of records documenting the Posluns family of Toronto. They include two scanned copies of photographs and one original, depicting various members of the Posluns family such as the family patriarch, Yosef ben Abraham and a copy photograph of the Tip Top Tailors building under construction in 1928.
The textual records consist of one electronic copy of a short history of the Posluns family, taken from Samuel Bernstein's biography, as well as a copy of a YMHA bulletin cover page from June 15, 1934, featuring a message from the president, Louis Posluns.

The records were loaned to the OJA on June 17, 2008 to be copied and returned to the donor.

Morris Norman (b. 1946) is a chartered accountant living and working in Toronto. He is an avid collector of Canadiana, specifically Judaica. He purchases lots at auction and donates them to the Ontario Jewish Archives, as well as other institutions.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of the individual items collected at auction by Morris Norman. The records relate to the Toronto Jewish community and Ontario Jewry and include textual documents, photographs, near-prints, publications, artifacts, posters and broadsheets, sound recordings, and ephemera. Most of the items relate to various Jewish organizations, businesses, synagogues and individuals, and to Christian missionary work in Toronto. The material has been described at the file level, or where appropriate, the item level.
There are also four distinct series of records which document Berul Sugarman, who was a concert violinist and orchestral leader; the Franklin family, who owned a large amount of property in Toronto in the late 1800s and early 1900s; radio and television scripts written by Wayne and Shuster, Henry Karpus and Russell Bradley; and a collection of Turofsky photographs.

Newman Leopold Steiner was born in Tachau, or Tachov (now part of the Czech Republic) ca. 1829, to Wolfgang Steiner and Francisca Rothschild. He was the eleventh in a family of fourteen children. Educated in Vienna, Steiner played an active role in the failed revolution of 1848. Not long after, he left for New York, trained as a stone sculptor, and then moved to Toronto in 1852. He set up a stonecutting and marble merchant business, first on Parliament Street, then King Street, and then at Yonge Street Wilton Avenue, and finally at Wilton and Victoria Street. He is credited with carving the crest above the main door of University College. Steiner was also involved in municipal politics, elected to City Council a total of five times between 1880 and 1885. He was defeated in 1889, but in 1897 he became an Alderman for Ward Three. In 1901, he was appointed Honourary Commissioner to the Pan American Exposition held in Buffalo in 1901. Steiner is considered to be Toronto's first Jewish Alderman and first Jewish Justice of the Peace. Steiner was also a member of St. John's Lodge in the Masonic Order, and was the founder and first president of the German Benevolent Society. Originally involved with Holy Blossom Temple, after 1882 Steiner, his wife Bertha and and their four children were no longer affiliated with the Jewish faith. Members of his family (excluding Steiner) joined the Unitarian Church in Toronto. Steiner married Bertha Sternberger in 1876, who was the daughter of a cantor in New York. They had six children: Herbert, Athur, Ernest, Walter (who died as an infant), Florence and Estelle. Steiner died in 1903 and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Item is one albumen photograph taken of N. L. Steiner's Marbleworks at 16 Wilton Avenue in Toronto, as well as a corresponding negative and copy print. There are six men posing in front of the building.

Abraham Franklin (ca. 1844-1905) and his wife Frances "Fanny" Franklin (ca. 1844-1908) came to Canada from Germany in 1865, via the United States. Together they had seven children: Jacob ("John"), Henry ("Harry"), Hyman ("Herman"), Annie (m. Robinson), Simon ("Sam"), Dora, and Katie.
Abraham began as a picture frame dealer on York Street, later becoming, with his wife, the owner of a second-hand clothing store on Queen Street West. By 1890, Abraham had established a jewellery store named Franklin Brothers, with his sons Jacob and Henry, and by the early 1910s also owned A. Franklin & Sons. The two businesses continued to operate simultaneously as a pawn shop, a jewellery store, and even a bicycle repair shop.
The Franklin family owned many large plots of valuable land in downtown Toronto, which they leased out to individuals and businesses, including Eaton's. Their land was located on the north side of Albert Street from James Street to Bay Street, along Gerrard Street from Yonge to Elizabeth Streets, and along Walton Street from Yonge to Elizabeth Streets. Later, the children inherited the property held by their parents, which had extended around the Queen Street West and Portland Avenue area.
In 1916, stemming from family concerns over her upcoming marriage to Elias Robinson, Annie Franklin transferred ownership of her portion of the inherited Franklin estate to her brothers—Henry, Hyman, and Simon—for a cost of $25,000 to be held in trust for her.
Scope and Content
This series contains residential and commercial leases between various members of the Franklin family and the building occupiers, as well as deeds of land documenting the purchase or transfer of land. Also included are statutory declarations, mortgage papers, and some family legal documents.
The documents have been arranged into files by property and have been described at the file level. There is also a separate file for the family legal documents and for a set of invoices submitted by the Franklin family barristers.

Scope and Content
This file contains the original deeds of land, mortgage papers and statutory declarations for the property bought by Henry Franklin in 1916, situated on the northwest corner of Gerrard and Terauley (Bay) streets. The property was comprised of lots thirteen and fourteen of concession one, and included the address 190 Terauley Street.
