- Administrative History
- As the first Jewish mutual benefit society in Ontario not to associate itself with a particular synagogue, the Toronto Hebrew Benefit Society, established in 1899, mostly consisted of members who recently immigrated from Eastern Europe. After their arrival in North America, many Jews wished to be a part of an organization where, for an annual fee, they could receive medical benefits, financial assistance if needed, cemetery privileges and even organized social programs for the community. However, once the federal government implemented these social programs, the society ceased to provide such services to its members. The Toronto Hebrew Benevolent Society also prided itself on its involvement in philanthropic activities such as donating to various organizations and institutions in and around the Jewish community.

Today, with headquarters relocated to Glen Rock, NJ, it is primarily an educational and philanthropic organization. There are chapters and members in cities and dental schools in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Israel, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand. Alpha Omega represents about 6,000 active dentists worldwide.
- The Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity is dedicated to the following: to be "The Voice of the Jew In Dentistry"; to be "The Voice of Dentistry in all problems concerned with the Jewish Fate"; to uphold "The Image of the Jew in Dentistry"; to fight discrimination in the graduation of dental students from their respective schools, in procedures of licensing boards, in organized dentistry and in the private practice of dentistry.
- The objectives of the Fraternity are to promote the profession of dentistry; to establish, foster and develop high standards of Scholarship, Leadership and Character; to inculcate a spirit of fellowship amongst all its members; to create and bind together a body of professional people, who, by scholarly attainments, faithful service and the maintenance of ethical ideals and principles, have achieved distinction; to honour achievement in others; to strive for breadth of vision, unity in action and accomplishment of ideals; to commend all worthy deeds, and if fraternal welfare demands, to call and counsel with its members; to accept, sponsor and develop the cultural and traditional achievements of our faith; to build within our fraternity a triangle, the base of which is Judaism, the supporting sides, professionalism and fraternalism.

- Scope and Content
- This accession consists of photographs of headstones at the Roselawn Cemetery in Toronto. The photographs were taken by volunteers working on the project which meant to capture genealogical information from the Jewish cemeteries around Toronto. Some of the information from the stones have been uploaded to the JewishGen's burial registry database, however, the photographs contain additional information such as Hebrew names and birth and death dates.
- Taken alongside the stone in each photograph is an accompanying marker indicating the section and row of the grave, which corresponds to a physical list filed with each binder. Researchers will have to search for the deceased person's name on JewishGen first and locate the section and row of the stone, before being able to find the photograph in the binders.
- Administrative History
- The Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) was formally established in 1985. It is now one of seven Jewish genealogical societies in Canada. Its mission is to stimulate interest in the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research; to facilitate the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research locally and globally; and to provide an environment for fellowship and mutual exchange among persons with an interest in Jewish genealogy.

- Administrative History
- Founded in 1980, the Transnistria Survivors' Association works diligently to provide a voice for and raise awareness of a lesser known group of Holocaust survivors from Transnistria, an area by the eastern Moldovan border with today's Ukraine that was the third largest Jewish population in Europe. As early as 1933, the Jews of Bucovina and Basarabia were affected by the brutally repressive laws aimed at Jews enforced by both the Nazis and the Romanians, neighbours turning on neighbours. By 1942, over 100,000 Romanian Jews were deported or murdered and many were interned at concentration camps in the Transnistria area. Those who survived these tragic circumstances and made a new home in Toronto, found one another and banded together to lend each other support and to tell their largely unknown story of oppression and survival. They organize regular Hazkarah (memorial) services and untiringly present their stories at speaking engagements and synagogues.

- Admin History/Bio
- Superseding the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, the first Annual Campaign of the new United Jewish Welfare Fund took place in 1938. It combined the appeals of 37 organizations into one, eliminating much of the inefficiency and competition of the previous twenty years. Money raised was for agencies and causes new and traditional, local and overseas. Recipients included; the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, Canadian Jewish Congress, the United Jewish Relief Agencies, the Joint Distribution Committee, and Palestine. In 1938, Campaign could be completed within a mere two weeks and raised $161,000. This figure rose to $348,000 in 1942 and surpassed one million dollars in 1951. When the State of Israel was established in 1948, Campaign was combined with the CJC and the United Palestine appeals into a new, combined campaign and re-named The United Jewish Appeal (UJA).
- With different local and world challenges and crises over time, annual campaigns have had a variety of foci: for example, the plight of Displaced Persons in Europe after the Second World War; the 1957 Rescue Campaign for refugees in Russia, Europe and North Africa; the first Emergency Campaign in 1967 in response to the Six Days’ War; and Operation Exodus 1990-1991, which raised funds to aid Soviet Jews.
- Early Campaign leadership was provided by lay people. Chairmen of the Campaign Cabinet included Samuel Godfrey, Ben Sadowski, Samuel J. Granatstein, Bernard Vise, Morris S. Till, and Samuel J. Zacks. A small administration committee carried out daily operations, but the bulk of the fundraising work was performed by the Service Council, a group of volunteers who planned, canvassed and evaluated each campaign, as well as organizing educational programs and public meetings. A Women’s Service Council and a Young Peoples’ Service Council also played key fundraising roles.
- Canvassing was conducted by volunteers from each professional or trade Division, such as doctors, lawyers, retail sales, etc. The volunteers were responsible for canvassing the members of their own group. A special Women’s Campaign had its own chair, sub-committees and programming. Divisions were further added to reflect the amounts of donations, Top Gifts, and Major Gifts for example. By the 1980s, the Service Councils had given way to professional Campaign Associates employed by UJWF. With further changes to UJWF/UJA Federation’s structure, Campaign first fell under the Financial Resource Development Department, then Integrated Development, and, in 2009, the Centre for Philanthropy. It is now supported by the Donor Relations Management, Donor Research, and Missions/VIP departments which cater to the diverse interests of individual donors.
- Through the 1940s and 1950s, face-to-face canvassing was the norm, with donor’s names and gifts published in the UJWF annual report. By the 1960s, an expanding community and a need for efficiency increased the use of the telephone, with regular telethons involving hundreds of volunteers. In 1970, a regular springtime Walk with Israel was included within the rest of Campaign events. In the 21st Century, the internet is used to solicit donations, publicize campaign news and events, and register volunteers for telethons and events like the Walk.
