- At the time of the donation, Sam's job title was director, arts, culture & heritage. Her department was Community Capacity Building.
- Administrative History
- The Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee of UJA Federation oversaw a strategy to fund and support Jewish cultural institutions, programs and initiatives that offered meaningful connections to Jewish identity and engagement. The committee considered programs that included (but were not limited to) the realms of visual arts, music, literature, dance, film, and theatre.
- The following seven agencies fell within the scope of the committee: Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre (UJA); the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre (UJA); the Toronto Jewish Film Festival; the Ashkenaz Festival; the Committee for Yiddish; the Koffler Centre of the Arts; and the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Committee.
- The committee reported to UJA's Community Capacity Building Committee (CCBC), which oversees UJA's investments in the Greater Toronto Area. The CCBC is accountable to UJA's board of directors.
- The Kultura Collective is a network of modern Jewish arts, culture, and heritage organizations that coalesced to create the collective. The name is inspired by the Kultur-Lige, an interwar collective that promoted Jewish culture and community across eastern Europe and that was destroyed at the height of its reach and impact. Members of the collective include Ashkenaz; the Canadian-Israel Cultural Foundation; the Committee for Yiddish; the Consulate General of Israel in Toronto; Fentster; the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company; Jewish Music Week; the Koffler Centre of the Arts; the Miles Nadal JCC; the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre; the Prosserman JCC; the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre; the Schwartz/Reisman Centre; and the Toronto Jewish Film Foundation.

- Accession consists of material documenting Samuel Posluns. Included are nine black-and-white photographs, an El Al certificate certifying Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Posluns flew non-stop between the United States and Israel, one invitation to the bar mitzvah of Michael Wilfred Posluns, copies of an article by Bernard Shane about the Tailor Project that appeared in the Canadian Jewish Chronicle, and an issue of North York General Hospital News from 1970 that features Samuel Posluns.
- Administrative History
- Samuel Posluns (1910–1994) was born in Toronto to Abraham Isaac Poslaniec (1870–1922) and Sheindel Saltzman (1872–1960). He had three brothers and three sisters: Joseph, Louis, Abe, Gertrude Miriam, Anne, and Sarah. His father, Abraham, established the family-run clothing firm Superior Cloak Company in 1916. In 1934, it was bankrupted and closed after a lengthy strike. In 1936, Samuel opened his own business, Popular Cloak Company. In 1967, the Posluns family purchased Tip Top Tailors, in partnership with entrepreneur Jimmy Kay. A year later they incorporated their new venture under the name of Dylex as a holding company for the Tip Top chain of stores.
- During the Second World War, Samuel Posluns served as a member of the air force reserves. After the war, he was elected president of the United Jewish Welfare Fund in 1947. That same year, in collaboration with the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Jewish Labour Committee, Posluns helped lead the Tailor Project along with Max E. Enkin, which was aimed at helping Jewish displaced persons immigrate to Canada by securing them employment as tailors. A committed advocate for Jewish education, Posluns also served as the first president and founding chair of the Board of Jewish Education (BJE) in 1949. He remained honorary president for life and continued to attend meetings until health problems held back his participation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Posluns was also a founding board member of the North York General Hospital.
- Samuel Posluns died in Toronto in 1994.

- Biography
- Arthur Gelber was born on 22 June 1915 in Toronto. He was educated at Upper Canada College. He married Esther Salomon and had four daughters. Arthur was actively involved in Jewish and general community activity. Among his accomplishments, Arthur served as chair of the National Arts Centre Corporation, chair of the Advisory Council Ontario Cabinet, past president of the Canadian Conference of the Arts, past president of the National Ballet, Board of Directors of the American Council for the Arts, Ballet Opera House, National Ballet, Stratford Festival, life director of the National Theatre School of Canada, governor of National Theatre School of Canada, former honorary chair of the Performing Arts Development Fund, and former governor of York University, trustee of the AGO, decorated with the Order of Canada, recipient of the Centennial medal in 1967, Diploma D’honneur 1978, Queen’s Jubilee Medal, vice-president of America-Israel Cultural Foundation, executive of Canadian Jewish Congress, president of Toronto Zionist Council, president of United Jewish Welfare Fund, second chair of the UJA in 1949, chair of the United Jewish Relief Agency, and chair of the United Jewish Appeal.

- Mike Rabovsky married Miriam Levinson, and their story is best told through this historical narrative:
- Owen Sound's Beth Ezekiel Synagogue, a designated building under Ontario’s Heritage Act, remains the last example of the early small town synagogue that was once so common across Canada. The most compelling window in the synagogue is dedicated to the Rabovsky and Levison's families and tells the story of two immigrant families and the establishment of a Jewish community in Owen Sound.
- The jagged shards of glass depict the Levison family's harrowing experience of Kristallnacht (night of broken glass), prelude to the Holocaust. Desperate to escape Germany, the family was just one boat ticket away from freedom. Moments before they were to leave, an elderly couple offered their tickets to the Levisons, effectively sealing their own fate as victims of the Final Solution, while giving the young family a chance to escape the coming storm. Waiting out the war in China, the family eventually made it to Canada where Manfred Levison immediately began to look for work as a Rabbi. At the same time, Isaac Ezekiel Cadesky, a refugee of the Russian pogroms and the man for whom our Synagogue is named, was looking for a Rabbi to serve Owen Sound's bourgeoning Jewish community. Manfred Levison took the job, and in time his daughter Miriam married Isaac's grandson Mike.
- Miriam met Myer (Mike) Rabovsky. He was 29 and she was 19. Theirs was a happy marriage, lasting more than fifty years. Miriam and Mike had one daughter, Goldie (m. Bruce Ronald) and two grandchildren.

- Biography
- Norm Albert (1928–2010), the son of Jacob and Lily Albert, was born in Toronto and raised with his brother, Stan, in Trenton and Belleville, Ontario. After attending Belleville Collegiate Institute, Norman joined his father in the Ladies' Retail Business, at the age of nineteen, by opening the Fashion Shoppe in Trenton. Norm's wife, Carole, hailed from Queens, New York. They were married in New York in 1956.
- Norman opened another ladies' clothing store in Trenton, the Normandy Shop. A third store, Artistic Ladies Wear, was opened with his brother in Belleville. While toiling in the business of being a retail merchant, Norman and his father joined ranks with a childhood friend, Sidney, to form S & A Investments, a mortgage, loan, and real estate development company. He also ran Kingston Automatic Vending for more than twenty years with his brother-in-law. Norm was on the executive for the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville for seventeen or eighteen years.
- Norman enjoyed his retirement years with wife Carole in Florida and at the lake house in Brighton, Ontario. They had three children—Mark, David and Michele—and six grandchildren.

- Martin Irwin Lockshin was born in Toronto in 1952, the son of Louis Leon and Sylvia Lockshin (née Freedman). He received his PhD from Brandeis University in 1984 and is also an ordained rabbi.
- Currently, Professor Martin Lockshin is an associate professor of humanities in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Linguistics at York University. He has published extensively and recently completed a term as director of York's Centre for Jewish Studies.

- Custodial History
- The records were in the possession of Norman Hersch until his death in the mid-1980s, at which point the donor took possession of the records and stored them until donating them to the OJA in March 2015.
- Administrative History
- Norman Hersch was a special effects technician for the CBC from the early 1950s until his retirement in the mid-1980s. He was married to a French woman from Western Canada named Margaret. He is buried in the Mount Albert area with his wife. He served in the Canadian military during the Second World War and graduated from Central Technical School upon his return. In later years, he started P & M Display in Yorkville. Norman's older brother Phillip was a screenwriter in Toronto. He wrote the CBC series Wojek. Their mother Lily (Polish) volunteered at Mount Sinai Hospital. Their father Alexander (Romanian) worked in stainless steel manufacturing. They lived around Cecil Street. Doug Wardle was a friend and colleague of Hersch's at CBC in the Special Effects Department.

- Accession consists of one DVD copy of a film David Nimmo created regarding the life and art of his late wife, Lea Vogel-Nimmo.
- Administrative History
- Lea Vogel-Nimmo was born in Rozniatov, Poland in 1937. She was saved from the Holocaust as one of the "Children of Tehran" and grew up in Israel. She became an artist and travelled to various countries to study and practice art, including, Florence, Amsterdam, Jamaica and the United States. She married Dr. David Nimmo in 1974 and later moved to Toronto, Canada. She passed away in March 2012 after living with cancer for 21 years.

- Gary Irving Wagman (1951–) was born 19 March 1951 and is the youngest son of Ann Wagman (née Gold, 1926–2017) and Sollie Wagman (1921–2014). His older brother Howard, known as Hushy (1947–2001), was born 9 October 1947. Gary is the grandson of David Gold and Rose Gold (his maternal grandparents) and Celia Wagman and Jacob Wagman (his paternal grandparents).

- Accession consists of two photographs from a 1984 Salsberg family reunion, photo copies of Irving Salsberg's birth registration, and a Canadian Jewish News article reviewing Gerry Salsberg in his role of Tevye in the 1994 production of Fiddler on the Roof. In addition, there are colour photo copies of the Salsberg siblings, Gerry Salsberg and cast from the 1972 production of Godspell and another of Gerry with what appears to be an acting troupe in celebration of "Neigbours" at Burks Falls arena in 1976. In addition, there are two photos of Sammy Salsberg, who was a famous pitcher in the sand lot leagues in Toronto in the early 1930s, throwing the opening pitch at the 2012 opening game at the Rogers Centre on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

- Accession consists of textual records and photographs documenting Gerry Freiman and his family. Included are Gerry Freiman's Camp Föhrenwald identity card, an assignment card and meal ticket, photographs taken at the camp, photographs taken at Jack Freiman's bar mitzvah, and film footage of the bar mitzvah that was held at Murray House in Toronto on 24 April 1960, as well as other records documenting the Freiman family's immigration process.
- Administrative History
- Gerry Freiman was born on 20 June 1910 in Poland. Rose Freiman was born on 4 November 1914. After the Second World War, Freiman found himself at the Föhrenwald displaced persons camp in Bavaria, Germany. On 13 September 1948, Gerry, Rose, and their son Jack departed Germany on the USS General Heintzelmann for Canada.
- Upon arriving in Canada, the Freimans stayed with a family they met in Föhrenwald. (The name of the family has, unfortunately, been lost.) This family offered Gary and Rose employment in the shoe manufacturing trade. The Freimans subsequently moved to 348 Northcliffe Boulevard, where they bought a fourplex and lived in one of the units on the ground floor. Gary and Rose remained at this address until their deaths: Gerry died on 8 November 1960; Rose Freiman died on 13 June 1983.
- Jack Freiman attended Rawlinson Community School and then Vaughan Road Collegiate. He did his postsecondary studies at the University of Toronto, where he studied pre-medicine and medicine. After graduating, he went on to specialize and practice as an internist in a hospital in Brampton, Ontario. Jack died on 6 November 2016.

- Hyman's Books and Art was a popular locale for the literary crowd. Hebraists were known to spend time here, discussing the latest trends in the world of literature. The owner Ben Zimon Hyman was also a Hebrew teacher but had originally trained as an engineer both in Russia and at the University of Toronto.

- The store was operated by Ben Zion Hyman and his wife Fanny. Their hours were 8:30 a.m. to 1pm daily (except for Saturday). There was a mimeograph machine, pop cooler, newspapers and a bar mitzvah registry. They carried Yiddish and Hebrew books, Judaica, tickets for the Standard Theatre, stationary, and school supplies. The store later moved to 412 Spadina Ave. (Donegan, Spadina Ave., p.138)

The Yiddisher Zhurnal (or the Daily Hebrew Journal) was the primary organ for the Yiddish-speaking population in Toronto. This newspaper covered events in the Jewish world in Toronto and abroad. Henry Weingluck (1902-1987) was an artist and Toronto art gallery owner, who immigrated to Canada in 1948 after being imprisoned in concentration camps in France during the Second World War. He studied at art academies in Crakow, Copenhagen, and Berlin and was a pupil of Professor Max Lieberman, president of Berlin's Academy of Arts prior to the Nazi takeover of Germany. Weingluck often depicted Jewish themes in his paintings, in a style he called "academic impressionism." He exhibited in Paris with Kandinsky and Chagall, as well as at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Jewish Museum, Berlin. He painted portraits of such prominent figures as Albert Einstein, Max Schmelin, Yehudi Menuhin, and Chaim Weizmann.

- From 1933 to 1942, Weingluck lived in France and, during the Nazi occupation of France, was imprisoned in eight concentration camps from 1942 to 1945. The Nazis made use of his artistic talent as a barracks designer and portraitist. During this time, the Germans confiscated 375 of his paintings. After the war, Weingluck moved to Tangiers, Morocco, and then immigrated to Canada to join his brother in Toronto. Henry opened H. W. Art Gallery, at 665 College Street, around 1948, and then Weingluck's Art Gallery and Gift Shoppe at 623 College Street, in the 1950s. In 1950, he married his wife Rae (née Simon), whom he met in Canada. Henry died in Toronto in 1987.

- As a result of the overcrowding and de-centralized facilities, in 1937, the YM-YWHA constructed its own athletic building at 15 Brunswick Avenue, next door to the Talmud Torah, to ease the overcrowding. Similar to the JCCs of today, the early YM-YWHA provided a sense of Jewish identity and camaraderie through physical, educational, cultural and community based programming.

- This item is a photograph of the Jewish community of Kirkland Lake assembled for the bar mitzvah of Joe Atkins, now a chartered accountant in Toronto. The photograph depicts that group seated at several banquet tables in the Legion Hall.

- Typed notes on the back continue: "Rare view of Hyman with his hat off, the grandfather, standing next to Harry. The only one missing is the photographer - Eddie Duke - and to this day I wish I could have been included. Picture taken in the Legion Hall which was koshered for the occasion.".

- David Day and his brother Jacob Day started a Hebrew school in Toronto on Major Street. Eventually, David Day started his own cheder on Markham Street and Jacob Day operated another cheder on Ulster Street. They both taught during the mid 1900s, from approximately 1925 to 1940.
- David Day had two sons named Sam and Nat. Nat Day was in the army and was married to Evelyn Day.
