Administrative History

Beatrice Collis (nee Florence) was married to Allan B. Collis, who owned a department store in Peterborough, Ontario called Allan B. Collis Limited. It was located on the west side of George Street, just north of Simcoe Street, and sold ladies' wear, mens' wear, and children's wear. Beatrice was active in the Peterborough Chapter of Hadassah. They had three children and later moved to Toronto.

The first manuscript group (MG2 B5) consists of material documenting B'nai Brith Lodge 1234 of Timmins, Ontario. Included are a minute book for the years 1962–1968, an attendance register for the years 1947–1951, a fifteenth anniversary souveneer program from September 1950, two copies of a program for an event featuring guest speaker Senator J. Bradette that was held on 10 January 1954, correspondence for the years 1956–1968, minutes from 1950–1968, and a constitution from 18 June 1936.

The second manuscript group (MG3 B22) consists of material documenting Congregation B'nai Israel of Timmins. Included are six membership cards for the years 1939–1940 and 1940–1941, three seat number cards (no date), a membership account ledger for the years 1942–1948 and 1948–1950, a general financial ledger for the years 1941–1949, membership assessment lists for the yeras 1942–1943 and 1946–1947, and financial statements for the years 1937–1954.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of material pertaining to the lives of Lillian and Israel Marder. Included are Polish passports used for entry to Canada by Lillian (1926) and Israel (1928), Canadian Naturalization Certificates for Lillian and Israel (1935), and a 1946 English translation by JIAS of a Polish application for a birth certificate by Skul Merder (Israel Marder) in 1928. In addition, there is a certificate honouring Israel for fifty years of participation in the Workman's Circle (1990), a testament to the Marder family for a "Sacred Bridge" concert by Toby Marder Cyglen (1992), and documents concerning the 1995 deaths of Israel and Lillian. These include information from Mount Sinai Cemetery, a eulogy delivered by their son-in-law Gordon Ciglen, and a faxed copy of their tombstone inscription.

Administrative History

The booklet belonged to Joshua Meslin, the grandfather of the donor. Joshua was a member of the congregation from its inception and its Shames for forty-two years. It was printed by the Royal Printing Company owned by Benjamin Meslin, Joshua's son.

Administrative History

The Community Action Committee for Israel was constituted on March 1978. Rabbi Harvey Fields served congregations in Boston, New Jersey, and Holy blossom Temple in Toronto before becoming the senior rabbi of the Wiltshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles from 1985-2003. He passed away on January 23, 2014 at the age of 78.

Administrative History

In 1946, the Jewish Folk Organizations in Toronto responded to the pioneers and workers in Palestine represented by the Histradrut Ha'Ovdim, and founded an aid organization. Projects in Israel have included medical clinics, hospital wings, trade schools, childrens' homes and the museum in the Kibbutz of the Ghetto Fighters.

Accession consists of a bound book of the Pride of Israel Sick Benefit Society constitution and by-laws from 1946.

Administrative History

The Pride of Israel Sick Benefit Society was founded in 1905 on Chestnut St. for the purpose of providing aid to its members requiring medical support. Each member was required to pay dues to the society and in return was entitled to the following services: doctor's attendance, special medical aid, hostpital care, incurable benefits, a burial plot, funeral arrangements and funeral benefits and sick benefit payments.

As the society grew, the benefit society formed an "Actzia" or credit society for granting loans and in the 1940s established a synagogue on Spadina Ave. so that its members could pray together. It later moved to Wilson Ave. and in 1969 a building was erected at its current location on Bathurst St., south of Steeles.

Accession consists of ninety-eight photographs of the arrival in Israel of a Taglit-Birthright Israel group in May 2007. The trip celebrated Toronto's 10,000th participant in the programme, David Stein, and he is the subject of most of the photographs. The images are of the group's arrival at the airport in Israel and in front of their tour bus. Accession also includes a DVD video about Canadian youth's nifgashim (encounters) with soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces as part of the Taglit-Birthright Israel program.

Accession consists of one photograph of the sign from the Eastern Children of Israel Congregation, located on Parliament Street, just north of Shuter Street, in Toronto. The sign is in the shape of an arc and was situated on the second floor of a brick building between two windows. It was written in Hebrew and mentions both the synagogue and a Talmud Torah.

The photograph was in the possession of Dr. Dorothy Pullan. She mailed it to the OJA in September 2011.

Administrative History

The Eastern Children of Israel Synagogue (Bnai Israel Hamizrachim or Eastern Children's Congregation) was founded in a house on Berkeley Street before the First World War. Its first synagogue was built at 177-179 Berkeley Street and officially opened in 1918. A Talmud Torah was later added onto the back. The synagogue was bulldozed in 1960 to make way for the Moss Park housing project, although the land sat vacant until 1962. The synagogue subsequently moved to 270 Parliament street until 1962, just north of Shuter Street, but is no longer in existence.

Accession consists of two copies of the original signed agreement between representatives of UJA Federation and the Israeli forum in Canada regarding the creation of a "fusion model" between the two organizations in order to better reach and represent the Israeli community in Toronto.

Custodial History

The records were transfered to the Archives by Gary Siepser, who was one of the signatories on the agreement.

Use Conditions

UJA Federation meeting minutes and general correspondence are closed for 10 years from date of creation. Contracts and donor agreements are permanently closed.

The photo was donated by Vardit Feldman, the daughter of Israel Feldman.

Administrative History

Israel Ignac Feldman was the son of Jakub Moszek and Pisarek Rajzla Feldman. On 15 March 1936, Feldman was drafted for military service in the Polish army and enlisted in the 31st Infantry Rifles Regiment of Kaniowski at Lodz, Poland. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion under the command of Major Holowka and attached to the 4th Company under the command of First Lieutenant Jarzecki. He was discharged on 15 June 1947.

On 1 October 1936, Ignac Feldman was promoted to the rank of First Class-Lance Corporal. On 15 September 1937, he was honourably discharged. He was called up again in 1938 for field exercises with the 18th Infantry Regiment at Skierniewice and was mobilized on 24 August 1939. Feldman was involvedin active operations in Skierniewice, Grojec, Garwolin, Zelechow, Ryki, Lubartow, Celestynow and Falenica between 1 September until 26 September 1939, when he as taken into German captivity in Falenica as a prisoner-of-war. On 20 October 1939, Feldman escaped from the prisoners convoy. He was honourably discharged from the Polish Armed forces while in Germany on 15 June 1947. That December, he immigrated from Germany to Holland. He later moved to Toronto with his family. Fedlman was awarded the Army medal 1939-1945 for his participation in the Second World War.

Accession consists of records documenting the 100th anniversary celebration of Congregation Knesseth Israel. The records were compiled in an indexed binder by Edwin Goldstein, president of the synagogue. Included are newsclippings, press releases and advertisements; invitations and programs; a commemorative calendar; a volunteer t-shirt, a kippa and a gift bag; correspondence with the Ontario Trillium Foundation; information on a guided architectural walking tour of the area; an Israel Today DVD featuring the synagogue; the book "One Hundred Years at the Junction Shul" written by Neil Ross and Lorne Miller; and a DVD compilation featuring video and photographic highlights from the various anniversary events.

Administrative History

Congregation Knesseth Israel was established in 1911 at 56 Maria Street in the West end of Toronto. Early 20th century membership in the synagogue consisted mainly of new jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, many of whom lived and worked in the Junction as artisans, peddlers, shop owners and scrap and metal collectors. Known as the Junction Shul, Knesseth Israel Synagogue was built with the labour and funds provided by the founding members and their families.

Orthodox services first began in 1913 and since the 1930s the synagogue has functioned without a rabbi, with services being led by a cantor or the congregants themselves. Some family names associated with this early period include: Alexandroff, Goldstein, Nickolaevsky, Kronis, Greenblatt, Usprich, Tanenbaum, and Naftalin.

Knesseth Israel is the oldest Toronto synagogue still in use as a synagogue today and is now cared for by the descendents of these founding families. Although members of the synagogue are now few (as the Jewish population of the Junction has waned greatly since the 1960s), the synagogue still performs High Holiday services for some 75-80 full members and 300 associate members.

Administrative History

In 1899, London established its first permanent synagogue at the corner of Richmond and Simcoe Streets. The B'nai Israel Congregation operated from this location until 1917. With the rapid influx of Jewish residents at the turn of century, the congregation eventually relocated to the site of a former church located at the corner of Wellington and Grey. B'nai Israel operated from this new home until 1960. On September 11, 1960, B'nai Israel Congregation consecrated its new purpose built synagogue at the then northern border of the city. Praised for its ultramodern design, the synagogue complex designed by architect Philip Carter Johnson, housed a school, social hall and youth centre.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of material documenting the Toronto Grand Order of Israel. Included are eight oath books (Jul. 1930-Jan. 1977) containing information about new members, such as their address, marital status, number of children, affiliations with other groups, occupation, and state of health. Also included is one composite group photograph of officers and members (1913), a group photograph of members of the Grand Lodge (which consisted of both the Toronto and Hamilton Lodges), and a group photograph likely of members of the Toronto Lodge and its women's auxiliary (ca. 1928). Finally, accession also consists of one newspaper clipping relating to the Lodge's establishment of an endowment for the Perpetual Student Aid at the Hebrew University. Identified in the photographs are: Paul Albright and Percy Wright.

Accession consists of records documenting the operations of the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, including the preparations for the 100th anniversary celebrations in 2011. Records include meeting minutes for the Davening Committee, Fundraising Committee, Media Committee, Archives Committee, Book Committee, and the Board of Directors; membership lists; programming materials; notices for meetings and services; records related to the repair and restoration of the synagogue in the late 1980s including five architectural drawings of the synagogue showing required restorative work; general correspondence; a small amount of financial materials; planning records, research materials and publicity records related to the 100th celebrations; and a photo album and VHS recording of the provincial heritage plaquing of the synagogue in 2001. The video features remarks by Edwin Goldstein and Joey Tanenbaum as well as a short historical lecture by Dr. Stephen Speisman.

Accession consists of records transferred from UJA Federation of Greater Toronto's Office of the President. Included are: a binder of photographs taken at the 2017 International Leadership Reunion, which was held in Toronto; a binder of photographers of the 2018 Yakir Keren Hayesod Award Ceremony, which was held in Jerusalem; a booklet from the same award ceremony that contains notes from the chair and general director as well as information about the award recipients; and, lastly, a video recording of the awards ceremony. Both binders include memorial tributes to Barry Sherman and Honey Sherman.
