Admin History/Bio

Betty Goldstick Lindgren (1892-1984) was a prominent member of several Toronto Jewish social service organizations. She was born in Latvia, the daughter of Sarah and William (Wolf) Goldstick. The couple had ten children. The family came to Canada in 1904 when Betty was a young child. She studied at Phoebe School, and later went on to the University of Toronto and earned her degree in 1919. She began teaching and married a Swede named Karl Tycko Lindgren. They had two children, but only their son, Edward, survived.

Betty was involved in the Herzl Girls' Zionist Society as well as the Deborah Chapter of Hadassah. She was also a Toronto delegate to the first Canadian Jewish Congress in Montreal, 1919. Her brothers Maurice and Edward owned the E & M Wrecking Building Company. Her sister, Dorothy Dworkin, was a trained midwife and owner of Dworkin Shipping Agents with her husband Henry. Her brother Isadore was a professor at the University of Western Ontario. Her brother David was a lawyer and labour activist. Her other siblings were Emma, Celia, Annie and Jean. Betty passed away on November 6, 1984.

Custodial History

The records were donated by Edward Lindgren, Betty's son, in 1978. They were all part of 78-10/1 and included a list of items. Some of the material, such as the books, Jewish newspapers, and magazines have been separated from the fonds and placed into MG 9. The Herzl Girls Zionist Society minutes and records were placed in MG2 J1K shortly after they arrived. A file list of items included in this fonds has been created and is available below. A number of non-Canadian periodicals and books have been removed from the fonds. A list of these items is included with box 54-2-4. Several of these were put aside for auction, and several might be integrated into the OJA's publication holdings at a later date.

Scope and Content

The records in this fonds document the life and activities of Betty Goldstick Lindgren. They include correspondence, memorabilia, press clippings, invitations, certificates, programs as well as an autograph book and family record book.

The fonds also includes family photographs of Betty and the Goldstick family.

Notes

The textual records have been placed in acid-free files, with some of the more delicate items in melinex folders.

Robert Joel Kamin was the son of Sylvia Goldstick and Dr. Izzy Kamin. Sylvia was Betty Goldstick Lindgren's niece and the daughter of Maurice and Regina Goldstick (née Baum). The couple married in 1940 and lived in San Fransisco. The other children included David and Bruce.

Ralph Constam was the son of Annie Goldstick and Jake Constam. The parents were married in 1910 in Toronto. Ralph was born on 19 September 1912. He served overseas during the Second World War and married Annaca "Ann" Spero in Holland in 1945. They had a second wedding in Toronto in May 1946. Ann and Ralph had two children, Jacqui and Simon.

Esther Goldstick Swartz was the daughter of Dr. Idadore Goldstick and Anna Goldstick (née Nathanson). They married in December 1917 and lived in London, Ontario. Esther was born during the early 1930s. She married Dr. Gerry Swartz in August 1952. The family moved to Buffalo in 1959. They had two children, Cellia and William, both of whom were born in Buffalo.

Danny Goldstick was the son of David Goldstick and Sarah Goldstick (née Kaplan). David Goldstick was a lawyer and was very involved in the labour movement as well as politics. David and Sarah married in May 1929 and had two children, Thomas and Daniel. Danny was born on 31 May 1940. Daniel completed a BA at the University of Toronto and a PhD at Oxford. He later became a professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Philosophy.

Dr. Isadore Goldstick was the son of William Goldstick and Sarah Goldstick. He was born in Latvia in 1890. He graduated with a PhD from the University of Toronto in the Department of Pedagogy in 1928. He married Anna Nathanson in December 1917, and they had two daughters, Reva and Esther. The family lived in London, Ontario. He spent many years teaching at the secondary school level and later became a professor at the University of Western Ontario. He was the author of eight German and French texts that were used in Canadian schools.

Sarah Goldstick was married to Wolf Goldstick. Their daughter Celia married Mr. Louis Goodman, and they had two daughters, Dina and Rose. Dina only lived until the age of two. The surviving child, Rose, was born in Chicago. She married Mac Snider during the 1920s, and they had two children, Jordon and Susan, who were born in 1929 and 1935 respectively. Her husband died at a young age in March 1935, leaving Rose a young widow.

This family portrait includes four generations of Goldsticks: Sarah Goldstick (far right), Celia Goodman (left), Rose Snider (back) and her son Jordon (in front). The photograph was taken in Toronto at Simpson Brothers Studio on Yonge Street, five years before Sarah passed away in 1936.

Notes

The file list provides the name Gordon for the child. However, Betty's family record book indicates that Rose's son's name was Jordon Sigmund Harry Snider. Therefore Jordon is used as the name for the child.

Admin History/Bio

Dorothy Dworkin (née Goldstick) was born in Latvia in 1890. She was the daughter of William and Sarah Goldstick. She came to Canada in 1904 at 14 years of age. She studied nursing in the United States, by training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland. She then took her exams in midwifery, and in 1909, she received her diploma from the State Board of Ohio.

In 1911 she married Henry Dworkin, who was the founder of the Toronto Labour Lyceum. Henry opened a variety store in 1917, which later became a tobacco and shipping agency business called Dworkin Travel, located at 525 Dundas Street West. Together, the Dworkins helped bring in hundreds of immigrants from Poland, Roumania and Latvia. The couple had a daughter, Ellen, whom they referred to as Honey. In 1928, Henry was tragically killed in an automobile accident. After her husband's death, Dorothy brought up her daughter alone, ran the travel business, and continued to do charitable work with Mount Sinai Hospital.

Ellen Dworkin, the daughter of Dorothy and Henry, was called Honey by her parents. She was born on 19 June 1912. She married Lewis Raxlan in 1932. They divorced, and she married Leon Arthurs. They had two children, Harry and Linda. Harry later became the dean of Osgoode Law School.

She also served the B'nai Israel Congregation in London and its Hebrew school.

Dr. Abram (Abe) Slone graduated from the University of Toronto in 1918 and practiced as a dentist in Toronto for two years. In 1921, he began his dental practice in Ottawa, becoming the first Jewish dentist in Ottawa. He served both as president of the Ottawa Dental Society and of the Eastern Ontario Chapter. He served in the Canadian Army during the First World War and an officer in the reserves after the war. He was closely associated with Poale-Zion and Histadrut Campaigns, and was Chairman of the Zionist Organization in Ottawa. He was also a founder of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society. He was a member of Beth Shalom Congregation (honoured for 50 years of affiliation), Masonic Lodge (50 year member), and founder of the first Jewish Boy Scout troop. His wife was Jean (Goldstick) Slone and he had two sons, Morton and Joel. He died in November 1971.

Admin History/Bio

The first meeting of the Canadian Jewish Congress was held in Montreal from March 16-19, 1919. Their intended goal was to mobilize Canadian Jews and discuss the following issues: the community's self-image and future, national minority rights in Eastern Europe, the future of a Jewish national home in Palestine and the recognition of a Jewish nation by the League of Nations. This conference was followed in May of that year by several district conferences held in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.

On January 26, 1919, a conference attended by 125 local organizations was held in the Baron de Hirsch Institute. The conference recognized the necessity for a Canadian Jewish Congress, and elected a committee of forty to arrange the first national CJC meeting. The committee divided Canada into three territorial districts: Montreal (Quebec), Toronto (Ontario), and Winnipeg (Western Canada), and each district was to arrange elections to send delegates.

Ontario sent a total of 65 delegates to the first national CJC meeting in March of 1919. 40 of these were from Toronto. Elections for the all the delegates took place on March 2, 1919. A large majority of Canadian Jews participated in these elections.

Across the country, 25,000 ballots were cast during the 1919 election. This indicated that a huge portion of the Canadian Jewish community was involved in the CJC, since the total Jewish population at that time was 125,000.

The first CJC Plenary Assembly, involving the group seen in this photo, was from March 16-19, 1919 (Purim), and the photo was taken on the 18th on the steps of the Baron de Hirsch building at 2040 Bleury St., but the actual meetings were held nearby at the Monument Nationale Theatre, which had a larger auditorium.

The item is a panoramic photograph of the delegates who took part in the first Canadian Jewish Congress plenary session in Montreal. The photo was taken on March 18, 1919 on the steps of the Baron de Hirsch building on 2040 Bleury St., though the actual meetings were held nearby at the Monument Nationale Theatre, which had a larger auditorium.

Three members of the Goldstick family were elected delegates to this conference from Toronto: Maurice Goldstick, Betty Goldstick and Henry Dworkin. In turn, many prominent members of the Toronto community took part such as: M. Gelber (manufacturer), Ben Zion Hyman (book store owner and scholar), I. Matenko (teacher), Dr. Pollock (physician), Sam Factor (lawyer), and A. Cohen (lawyer).

It features a rendering of Theodor Herzl; 2) Jewish Colonial Trust Share Club booklet issued to Betty Goldstick in 1907 by the Herzl Girls for the purpose of tracking instalments towards share holding. Stamps from the organization were used to track payments; 3) Pamphlet advertising The Herzl Girls' production of "Esther, a Purim play," March 16, 1908. Assisted by the Zion Cadet Corps, the production was held at Assembly Hall, Zion Institute; 4) Program from a comedietta and dance given by The Herzl Girls' Zionist Society on Jan. 25, 1916. The dance was held at the Orange Hall on Euclid and College Streets; 5) "The Zionist movement: its aims and achievements," by Israel Cohen; 6) "A Zionist catechism," published by the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada; 7) Certificate from JNF's King George V Jubilee Forest in Israel, made out to "Elijah Lindgreen" of Toronto, Ontario. "Elijah" was likely the Hebrew name of Betty's son Edward; 8) May, 1948, State of Israel issue of "Canadian Zionist". This file contains Betty Lindgren's personal correspondence from between 1911 and 1938. A large portion of the letters are from Betty's mother (Sarah Goldstick), and her niece Ellen (Honey) Dworkin, but among them are letters from Betty's sisters Ellen Lurie (and daughter Mae), Jean Slone, Dora (Dorothy) Dworkin and Annie Constam. From 1919 to 1920, New York State's Joint Legislative Committee to Investigate Seditious Activities (commonly referred to as the Lusk Committee) sought to expose those organizations and individuals who allegedly posed a threat to American democracy and capitalism. Throughout New York State, socialist, labor, and ethnic organizations were investigated or called before the committee to account for their activities.

In 1920, Louis Waldman, August Claessens, Samuel A. DeWitt, Samuel Orr and Charles Solomon were expelled from the New York State Assembly on the grounds that membership in the Socialist Party constituted disloyalty to the United States. The public outcry over the expulsions eventually led to denunciation of the committee's work and methods.

Scope and Content

This file contains a booklet oulining the evidence taken before the Judiciary Committee in the matter of the investigation by the Assembly of the State of New York as to the qualifications of Louis Waldman, August Claessens, Samuel A. DeWitt, Samuel Orr and Charles Solomon to seats in the assembly. The four men were members of the Socialist Party. The booklet was mailed to "Miss Betty Goldstick.".

Jessie Ethel Sampter, author of the play "The New Apostasy," was an American Zionist educator, poet, and feminist leader. Sampter was a close friend and colleague of Henrietta Szold, first president of Hadassah. Born in New York City on March 22, 1883, Sampter was the daughter of wealthy German Jewish parents. Frail and crippled by polio as a child, she did not attend school and was largely self-educated. Henrietta Szold was among a handful of individuals who introduced Sampter to Zionism and the two became lifelong friends and philosophical comrades. In 1915, Sampter founded Hadassah's School of Zionism. As director of the school, she conducted its class on Zionism, composed Zionist manuals, and co-edited a textbook on Zionism that had three editions. She was considered Zionism's premier educator in America at that time. In 1919, she moved to Palestine, where she settled on a kibbutz, and advocated for peaceful relations between Jews and Arabs. Sampter channelled her pacifist convictions into advocacy of good relations between Jews and Arabs and wrote poetry to promote this ideal. Concerned for the welfare of Yemenite Jews, she undertook the education of Yemenite girls and adopted a Yemenite child before her untimely death on November 11, 1938 from malaria and heart disease.

This file contains three playscripts: "The Dream of Bath Zion," "The New Apostasy" by Jessie E. Sampter, and "Nishikigi" by Motokiyo. These plays were likely used as part of Betty's Hadassah activities.
