There is also a racist and antisemitic unsigned letter and a newspaper clipping about a claim of desecration and looting in holy places in Jerusalem by the Israeli army. The accusation is being investigated by international organizations including churches and government agencies.

File consists of documents certifying that John Glass as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario who previously served in the military, is appointed an official representative of the province with travel expenses paid. There is material pertaining to events in London prior to crossing to France, including a guide book for the city; itinerary for events; and an invitation to a reception in the garden of Buckingham Palace. There are also postcards from the Cunard White Star ship Ascania, on which Glass was a passenger, and from the Vimy monument. As well there is a schedule of pilgrimage events in France and a guidebook for the pilgrimage to Vimy for the dedication of the Canadian National Monument and exploration of other battlefields in the area.

Scope and Content

File consists of a letter to John Glass from the City of Toronto Victory Loan Committee regarding his acceptance of an invitation to address representatives of the Superior Cloak Company. There is also documentation of a conference on April 15, 1942 of the Citizens' Victory Council including an invitation to John Glass to attend, his response, and a publicity announcement (described as "conference call") detailing the speakers and topics to be discussed.

Jewish voluntary military units formed during the First World War to fight with British troops for the liberation of Palestine from Turkish rule after Turkey entered the war in 1914 on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary. The legion was conceived and promoted by Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky, a Russian-Jewish intelectual and Zionist. The units were gradually demobilized after the war and during the interwar years Haganah was born and eventually the Israel Defense Forces.

Scope and Content

File consists of a a booklet titled History of the Jewish Legion on the 50th Anniversary of the Jewish Battalion 1917-1967 by Dr. J. Schechtman and two typed excerpts from the Story of the Jewish Legion by Zeev Jabotinsky. There is correspondence from Shlomo Perla of the Zionist Revisionist Organization of Toronto to John Glass concerning the donation to Glass of the publications mentioned above. Finally, there is material prepared by Glass including Preface to the History of the Jewish Legion, notes, and a detailed essay "The Unique Saga of the Jewish Legion."

Physical Condition

One of the Zeev Jabotinsky excerpts is badly stained.

File consists of a small hardcover booklet titled Toronto Municipal Handbook Centennial Year 1834-1934. "Alderman Glass" is printed on the cover.

Notes

This publication contains a wealth of information about Toronto at the time. Included is a list of mayors since 1834, current members of the city council, weather records, a list of parks and playgrounds, as well as data about utilities, police and fire departments, school boards, libraries, and statistics concening other city organizations and institutions. .

Folder consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence between John Glass and a number of individuals including Samuel Factor, W. G. La Marsh, Isadore Levinter, W. L. Miller, M. F. Hepburn (prime minister of Ontario), Colin Campbell, J. Louis Shannon, Gordon Conant, Mitchel Sharp, and W. Ross Macdonald.

Correspondence is generated by Ontario government departments and institutions including the Department of the Attorney General, Legislative Assembly, Office of the Prime Minister (now Pemier), Minister of Health, Ministry of Works, Department of Property, Treasury Department, and the Toronto Historical Board.

Of note is a letter from the Department of Public Welfare confirming that John Glass will be in charge of the memorial wreath presentation at the 1937 City Hall Remembrance Day Service. As well there is correspondence concerning a 1971 reunion of survivors of the 1919 Veterans Class at Osgoode Hall Law School. This small group of about eight men included John Glass.

St. Andrew was a provinicial electoral district in downtown Toronto that stretched from Yonge to Bathurst and included Spadina Avenue and Kensington Market. It was created in 1926 and existed until 1967 when it was merged with an adjacent riding to form St. Andrew: St. Patrick.

Scope and Content

File consists of correspondence related to the re-election of John Glass as a Liberal member of the Ontario parliament for the riding of St. Andrew. Campaign organization is documented with letters requesting and acknowleddging support from Liberal organizations and individuals hosting meetings and making endorsements on the radio. There is also information regarding publicity material and staff appointments. Telegrams and letters from friends, colleagues, and other supporters congratulating John Glass on his victory.

File consists of correspondence related to the re-election of Johm Glass as a Liberal Member of the Ontario parliament for the riding of St. Andrew. Included are letters of congratulations to Glass from politicians, members of the legal profession, hotel executives, businessmen and organizations and institutions such as the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Toronto Liberal Association, and the Zionist Organization of Toronto.

John Glass thanks those who congratulated him on his victory and assisted his campaign by providing goods and services and publicity. In turn he expresses his warm wishes to cabinet ministers on their recent appointments and thanks prime minister (premier) of Ontario Mitch Hepburn for his supportive message.

As well there is correspondence concerning invoices for campaign equipment and submission of information regarding receipts and disbursement of expenses. Lastly there is a letter from Glass to the editor of the Der Kampf newspaper refuting what Glass believes is a scandalous accusation of election fraud.

File consists of correspondence in 1937 from John Glass congratulating successful candidates in the Toronto municipal election to positions including the city council, board of control and the board of education. Ralph Day is congratulated on his appointment as mayor of Toronto. Lastly Glass congatulates Allan Lawrence on his appointment to the provincial legislature in 1967.

Thanking Glass for their 1937 election victories are members of the board of control, board of education, Mayor Ralph Day, and the assisstant registrar.

In 1963 Vernon Singer thanks Glass for recognizing his election to the Ontario legislature, and in 1964 Philip Givens, newly elected mayor of Toronto, expresses his appreciation to Glass for his message.

The Old Toronto Western Hospital Act was enacted in 1914. Grace Hospital amalgamated with Toronto Western Hospital in 1926.

Scope and Content

File consists of a letter from law firm Fasken, Robertson, Aitchison, Pickup & Calvin to John Glass acknowledging their appreciation for his agreeing to introduce the new bill in the Ontario legislature. Two versions of the 1941 act are included, one with explanatory notes following each section with comparisons to the 1914 original.

Issues covered in the act include the board of governors (duties, rules of election, financial powers, and responsibilities and relationship to medical staff and patrons).

Born in Odessa, Vladimir Jabotinsky (1880-1940) was a Zionist leader notable for founding the Revionist movement within Zionism. In 1926, he travelled to Canada under the sponsorship of the Hebrew Veterans Association.

Scope and Content

File consists of a contract between Hector Duthisac of Montreal and the Hebrew Veterans Association, Toronto. Duthisac was the manager for the Canadian tour of Vladimir Jabotinsky. The contract details the financial and logisitcal responsibilities of both parties for a lecture to be delivered on February 11, 1926 by Jabotinsky on his visit to Toronto.

File consists of correspondence relating to John Glass' battle against discrimination based on race and religion in Ontario and society in general. Included are commentaries on his newspaper article proposing amendments to the Ontario Libel and Slander Act, his correspondence with the Canadian Jewish Congress, and the prime minister (premier) of Ontario regarding offensive "Gentiles Only" signs on highways, at country resorts, and in parks. In addition there is a report on the operation of Nazi-affiliated groups in the province and a telegram expressing support from a "Negro Youth Group," as well as an impassioned speech delivered by Glass in the Ontario legislature, in which he pleads for human rights and the end of intlolerance and bigotry.

File consists of material pertaining to Bill 24 of the Ontario legislature, An Act to Prevent Discrimination Because of Colour, Race, Creed, or Religion. Its shorter title was the Discrimination Prevention Act 1943. It was tabled by John Glass. In addition to a draft and memorandum on the bill there is correspondence expressing approval from organizations such as the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Ontario Religious Education Council, the Canadian Congress of Labour, and a representative of the black community. The is also an antisemitic notice that was circulated to workers in a wage dispute at a factory in Newmarket, Ontario. The notices were subsequently taken down and sent to Glass' office for disposal.

Finally, there are copies of acts on similar themes, such as antidiscrimination and civil rights, that were produced in other jurisdictions such as New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, and Manitoba from 1935 to 1942.

File consists of documents pertaining to the sale of the property comprising lots 6-9 on the east side of Spadina Avenue, Plan D-254, also known as 651 Spadina and Townsend House.

There is a handwritten document that includes a plan of the property and a chronological chain of ownership by way of mortgages and deeds from 1895-1929, through the McMaster family to the Central Council of the Girls Friendly Society in Canada. As well, there are legal documents such as offers to purchase, correspondence with lawyers and insurance companies' financial statements, mortgage matters, and an affadavit of incorporation of the Toronto Zionist Council in 1907. Due to the complexity of the sale, the Zionist Council applied for and was granted letters patent by the assistant provincial secretary in order to enlarge and clarify the organization's corporate powers.

General: Included is a letter from noted Toronto architect Benjamin Brown reporting on his inspection of the property and projected costs for renovations and upgrades to the building.

File consists of legal documents pertaining to the sale of the property comprising lots 6-9 on the east side of Spadina: Plan D-254, also known as 651 Spadina, from the Central Council of the Girls' Friendly Society to the Toronto Zionist Council. There is a 1928 declaration of Arthur Carlson McMaster stating his claim to the property through his parents, and including a history of the property since 1883.

Further declarations by Thrza Deverall and Mary Sparling, both of the Girls' Friendly Society, continue the history from the McMasters to the 1942 sale to the Zionist Council. A 1942 letters patent document reincorporates the Toronto Zionist Council as a corporation that can hold real estate etc.

Correspondence between John Glass for the Zionists and lawyers for the sellers concern bank loans, insurance, and regulations for applications for building permits for renovations of the facility.

File consists of material pertaining to the Zionist Organization of Canada and associated organizations such as the Toronto Zionist Council, Arbeiter Ring, Jewish National Fund, Habonim, Hadassah and Junior Hadassah, and the Hebrew Liberal Club. Many of these organizations were housed in the Zionist Building at 651 Spadina Avenue.

There is a report of the call-up of army reservists during the Six-Day War in Israel, a proposal and report concerning a move of the Zionist Organization of Canada headquarters from Montreal to Toronto, and a reprint of an article from the Jewish Standard titled "Zionism in Canada" by Julius Hayman, and conversations concerning revisions to the Zionist Organization of Canada's constitution.
