Admin History/Bio

Dorothy Dworkin (1890–1976) was a prominent healthcare worker in the Toronto Jewish community and a founder of Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto), whose family business, Dworkin Travel, assisted hundreds of European Jews in immigrating to Canada. Dworkin was born in Latvia, one of ten children of William and Sarah Goldstick. She came to Canada in 1904, at fourteen years of age. She studied nursing in the United States by training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She then took her exams in midwifery, and in 1909, she received her diploma from the State Board of Ohio.

Ida Siegel and her brother Abe Lewis had set up a free Jewish dispensary in Toronto on Elizabeth Street. They hired Dorothy to take charge of it after her return. She ran the dispensary during the afternoon when it was open and made house calls the rest of the day. In 1910, she helped form the dispensary's women's auxiliary. This organization distributed pasteurized milk and offered other services. Later on, they organized an orphanage for Jewish children.

In 1911, she married Henry Dworkin, who was the founder of the Toronto Labor Lyceum. The dispensary soon closed after her departure. Henry opened a small variety store in 1917, which later became the tobacco and shipping agency business called Dworkin Travel, located at 525 Dundas Street West. Together, the Dworkins helped bring in hundreds of Jewish immigrants to Toronto. They would travel to Poland, Romania, and Latvia in order to help the family members of their clients settle in Toronto. The couple had a daughter, Ellen, whom they referred to as Honey. In 1928, Henry was tragically killed in an automobile accident. The newspaper articles of the time indicated that as many as twenty thousand people honoured him by attending his funeral.

After her husband's death, Dorothy ran the travel business and continued committing a great deal of her time to charitable work. She helped open Mount Sinai Hospital in 1922 and was the president of Mount Sinai women's auxiliary. Throughout her life, Dorothy Dworkin played a pivotal role in helping to raise both public and financial support for this important institution.

Over the years, she also became the honorary president of the Sinais, a member of the Mount Sinai Hospital Board, president of the Continental Steamship Ticket Agents Association, a trustee of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, and director of the Labor Lyceum. She continued to run the business and support the activities of Mount Sinai until her death in 1976, at the age of eighty-six.

Custodial History

The records were donated by Dorothy Dworkin's daughter, Honey Arthurs, on 9 April 1973.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of material created and collected by Dorothy Dworkin. This includes documents relating to her work at Mount Sinai Hospital and at Dworkin Travel, personal papers, and family photographs.

Notes

Thirty-three photographs are originals and ten are copies. The negatives and copy photographs were made by the OJA after acquiring the photographs.

Henry (Harry) Dworkin, husband of Dorothy (Goldstick) Dworkin, was born in 1886 in Russia and came to Canada in 1905. In the early years, Henry dispersed food to the hungry and helped people from Poland, Rumania, and Latvia after they settled in Canada. Henry opened E. & H. Dworkin Steamship and Bankers in 1917 with his brother Edward. The business continued as Dworkin Travel at 525 Dundas West. Dworkin Travel was the oldest travel agency in Toronto which also carried a wholesale tobacco business at the rear. Henry was also the founder of the Labour Lyceum. Henry and Dorothy had one daughter, Ellen, whose nickname was Honey. He died in an auto accident in 1928 and 20,000 people attended the funeral.

Dr. Abram (Abe) Slone graduated from the University of Toronto in 1918 and practiced as a dentist in Toronto for two years. In 1921, he began his dental practice in Ottawa, becoming the first Jewish dentist in Ottawa. He served both as president of the Ottawa Dental Society and of the Eastern Ontario Chapter. He served in the Canadian Army during the First World War and an officer in the reserves after the war. He was closely associated with Poale-Zion and Histadrut Campaigns, and was Chairman of the Zionist Organization in Ottawa. He was also a founder of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society. He was a member of Beth Shalom Congregation (honoured for 50 years of affiliation), Masonic Lodge (50 year member), and founder of the first Jewish Boy Scout troop. His wife was Jean (Goldstick) Slone and he had two sons, Morton and Joel. He died in November 1971.

Alomis, together with her husband Aleksander Azro, was a founding member of the Vilner Trupe (Vilna Troupe, named for the city where it began), the critically acclaimed Polish Yiddish theatre company created during the First World War. The creation of the Vilner Trupe was a direct response to the call from Europe’s great Jewish intellectuals for an artistic, literary, modern Yiddish theatre that would not simply entertain (that was the job of the popular Yiddish theatre), but would elevate the form to a national art addressing the highest cultural aspirations of the Jewish people. Azro and Alomis performed and toured throughout the 1920s, gracing Yiddish stages all over Eastern and Western Europe and across America. When in Toronto, Asro and Alomis stayed with Dorothy and Henry Dworkin, who ran Dworkin Travel and helped bring hundreds of Jewish immigrants to Toronto. Dorothy was a healthcare professional who in 1922 founded Mount Sinai Hospital; her husband Henry founded the Labor Lyceum in 1913.

Dr. Isidore Goldstick was the son of William and Sarah Goldstick and the brother of Dorothy Dworkin (née Goldstick) and seven other siblings. He taught at Beck Secondary School for twenty years and at other schools. He was also the author of many books and a prominent member of London's Jewish community. He died in March 1963.

Admin History/Bio

David Lewis was a lawyer and one of the leaders of the early CCF party. During the early years of the party, he was one of the most influential policy-makers in the CCF and travelled across the country and parts of the United States on speaking tours between and during election campaigns. During the 1950s, he moved to Toronto and joined a prominent law firm. He acted in an advisory capacity on the Trades and Labour Congress and the Canadian Congress of Labour when they formed the Canadian Labour Congress. He later helped form the New Democratic Party during the early 1960s. In 1962, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member for York South. He became NDP leader in 1971, after the retirement of T. C. Douglas. He lost his seat a few years later and began lecturing at Carleton University. He passed away in May 1981.

Henry (Harry) Dworkin, husband of Dorothy (Goldstick) Dworkin, was born in 1886 in Russia and came to Canada in 1905. In the early years, Henry dispersed food to the hungry and helped people from Poland, Rumania, and Latvia after they settled in Canada. Henry opened E. & H. Dworkin Steamship and Bankers in 1917 with his brother Edward. The business continued as Dworkin Travel at 525 Dundas West. Dworkin Travel was the oldest travel agency in Toronto which also carried a wholesale tobacco business at the rear. Henry was also the founder of the Labour Lyceum. Henry and Dorothy had one daughter, Ellen, whose nickname was Honey. He died in an auto accident in 1928 and 20,000 people attended the funeral.
