Admin History/Bio
Harry L. Wolfson (d. 6 November 1974), economist and community leader, was born in Toronto, the son of Hyman and Rebecca (Tranbetsky) Wolfson. He was married to Rose Chrom and had four children: Sheila, Alan, Judith and Laurence. He received his education at the University of Toronto and King's College, Cambridge University 1932-1934 where he studied under John M. Keynes.
He was the director and officer of various organizations including the general manager of the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (1934-1950); executive secretary of the Economic Stabilization Commission in Palestine (1942-1948); economic co-coordinator of the State of Israel (1948-1950); financial councilor for the Canadian Embassy in Washington (1951-1952); and alternate director of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank (1951-1952). He was affiliated with the Zionist Organization of Canada, the Canadian Jewish Congress, the United Jewish Welfare Fund, the Jewish Home for the Aged and Baycrest Hospital and the Y-Arts Council of the YM-YWHA.
Rose Wolfson (née Chrom) (b. 1918 - d. 1 May 2013) was the sister of Sara Schacter and Vivian Chrom. She was married to Harry L. Wolfson and had four children, Sheila, Alan, Judith and Laurence. She had nine grandchildren, Anna, Michael, Jesse, Julian, Jeremy, Alexander, Matthew, Nathaniel and Ethan, and seven great-grandchildren.
Dr. Alan Wolfson is the son of Harry and Rose Wolfson, and the brother to Judith, Sheila and Laurence Wolfson. He received degrees from Princeton, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and a PhD in Economics in 1975 from Harvard. He has had several careers, spanning academia, government and business. He is now a strategy consultant and board director.
Judith Wolfson is the daughter of Harry and Rose Wolfson and the sister of Sheila, Alan and Laurence Wolfson.
Sheila Wolfson is the daughter of Harry and Rose Wolfson and the sister of Judith, Alan and Laurence Wolfson.
Laurence Wolfson is the son of Harry and Rose Wolfson, and the brother to Judith, Sheila and Alan Wolfson
Ruthie Solway is Fanny (née Schwartz) Solway’s niece by marriage, who had been adopted by Alex Solway’s brother.
