Scope and Content
Accession consists of the records created or accumulated by Suzann (Cohen) Hutner related to the operations of the Canadian Jewish Review. Included are circulation reports, financial records, correspondence related to advertisers and the sale of the publication, issue summaries prepared by Suzann and a history of the paper written by Suzann. There also a few issues of the CJR from the 1930s.
Custodial History
The records were in the custody of Harold Hutner, the stepson of Suzann Hutner.
Administrative History
The Canadian Jewish Review was established in 1921 by George and Florence Cohen. The couple had founded the short-lived Buffalo Jewish Review prior to them immigrating to Canada. The CJR was not bound by any particular religion or organization. Their offices were located in teh Hermant Building at Dundas Square. The paper was sold to the Canadian Jewish Chronicle in 1966.

Hascal Moses built the flat iron building in Sudbury, the design which was based on a similar building in New York City. Wolfe Moses owned the large and successful store from around 1935 to 1973.

Accession consists of several copies of the Canadian Jewish Review, the Chronicle Review and the Canadian Jewish Chronicle Review. Also included is an Ottawa Jewish bulletin and several books.
Custodial History
Records were in the possession of Stanley Shankman.
Administrative History
Stanley Shankman was the former owner of the Canadian Jewish Chronicle Review. He purchased the Canadian Jewish Chronicle (est. 1914, successor to the Jewish Times, est 1897) in Montreal in 1962 when it was experiencing financial difficulties. Max Melamet was his first editor. He later purchased the Canadian Jewish Review (est. 1921) and combined the two publications into one: the Candian Jewish Chronicle Review (ca. 1967), which published editions in both Montreal and Toronto. Carol Frilegh was the paper's first edtor.
When Ray Wolfe, Donald Carr and Charles Bronfman purchased the Candian Jewish News from M. J. Nurenberger, Shankman sold them the Candian Jewish Chronicle Review to incorporate into one community paper serving the two cities.

Admin History/Bio
The New Fraternal Jewish Organization was established around 1959 by J.B. Salsberg and other ex-members of the United Jewish People’s Order. The NFJO was a fraternal organization open to men and women who shared a common interest in the welfare of Jewish communities around the world, the preservation of Jewish culture, the support of Israel, and democratic rights for all people. J.B. Salsberg served as president for several terms and also edited the organization’s publication “Fraternally Yours”.
Scope and Content
File consists of records documenting J.B. Salsberg's involvement in the New Fraternal Jewish Association. Included are two copies of the NFJA's publication Fraternally Yours (1963 and 1982), notes for an obituary delivered by J.B. Salsberg for member Leo Sax (Nov. 1970), and photographs and a certificate documenting a 70th birthday celebration thrown by the NJFA for Salsberg. Also included are photographs and a newspaper clipping documenting the opening of the medical clinic in Kiryat Yam (Israel) that was built by the NFJA in honour of J.B. Salsberg. Identified in the photographs are: J.B. Salsberg, M. Biderman, Ambassador C.E. McGaughey, Sam Lipshitz, Malka Portugali, Sarah-Gittel Salsberg, David Lewis, and Harry Binder.

Included are: receipt for an ad in the Daily Hebrew Journal (1942), announcements of an upcoming lecture and list of lectures from the Institute of Jewish Studies (1940, 1942), periodical devoted to Jewish affairs (1942, in Polish), a poster published by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, packet of ribbons with the insignia "I support United Jewish Welfare" (1942-1943), newspaper clipping (1942, in Yiddish), solicitation letter from High Rabbinical Jeshivah Sfath Emeth (1942), two wedding invitations (1942), invitation to honour Samuel Bronfman on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday (1941), printed speech presented by Samuel Bronfman, President of CJC (1941), communication with the Canadian Jewish Congress (e.g. announcements of meetings, meeting minutes, call to support the victory loan, a letter in support of the Greek War Relief Fund, a letter reporting vandalism of "Moncatta Library" at University College, London) and a list of delegates to the 5th Plenary Session.

The donor found the volumes discarded in a box on Queen Street. They were once likely the property of someone in the Central Region office.
