Scope and Content: Accession consists of one negative depicting the Ontario Jewish Archives committee members in the former Beverley Street building, holding a wooden sign that reads: GENTILES ONLY.

Custodial History: Photograph was taken by a member of the Ontario Jewish Archives committee in 1983. The negative has been in the possession of Cyrel Troster since that time.

Administrative History: The sign was discovered by the committee at 152 Beverley Street in the basement hidden under the floorboards. A member of the committee used a crowbar to pull up the floor where it was discovered hidden in a hole. The physical sign was donated to the Ontario Jewish Archives.

Included are lists of elected officers and members for B'nai Brith Women (1970-1971), an invitation to a B'nai Brith Women Covenant Breakfast (1958), an issue of the Zionist student publication "masada" (1977), a schedule for High Holiday services at Darchei Noam (1994), an issue of the bulletin "The Window" of B'nai Israel Beth David Congregation (1977), and an issue of the newsletter "Shirayim" of the Canadian Union of Jewish Studies (1972). Cyrel. & Susan Cohen obtained federal grants to create a local initiative project with the initial focus to collect information on prominent members of the Toronto Jewish community. Admin History/Bio: The People's Olympics, in Barcelona, Spain was intended as a protest event against the 1936 Summer Olympics planned for Berlin during the period of Nazi rule. The newly-elected, left-wing Popular Front government in Spain decided to boycott the Berlin Olympics and host its own games following its election in February 1936. Invitations were made to the nations of the world. Buildings built for the 1929 World's Fair were supposed to be used for an Olympic Village. The games were scheduled to be held from 19 July to 26 July and would have therefore ended six days prior to the start of the Berlin games.; A total of 6,000 athletes from twenty-two nations registered for the games, including boxers Sammy Luftspring and Norman "Baby" Yack from Canada.; Many of the athletes were sent by trade unions, workers' clubs and associations, socialist and Communist parties, and other left-wing groups rather than by state-sponsored committees. Sammy Luftspring and Norman "Baby" Yack were sent with donations from the Canadian Jewish Congress.; With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War just as the games were to begin, the alternate games were cancelled.

Admin History/Bio: Michael Cowan is the son of Saul and Lillian Cowan.

Scope and Content: File consists of photographs of Michael Cowan as a small child, in a group photo of the Homewood Public School choir, as a teenager in front of the family home on Brucewood in Toronto, and with his wife Nancy in Montreal. There is a commencement programme for his 1957 graduation from Bathurst Heights Collegiate, and programmes for recitals, concerts, and theatre events in which Michael was a participant or composed the music. These include the UC Follies at Hart House, University of Toronto, The Royal Conservatory of Music, Temple Sinai Religious School operetta, and The Jazz Singer at the Saidie Bronfman Yiddish Theatre in Montreal. As well there is correspondence between Michael and family members, and a letter written by him at the age of 11 to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society offering a suggestion for the cause of rheumatism.
