Admin History/Bio
The Ontario government was putting pressure on the Jewish cemeteries spread around Toronto to clear up the disorder in the burial grounds to ensure a system of perpetual care. The cemeteries were approached with this in view. In the end, through the efforts of Al Ginsburg of Beth Tzedec, the Dawes Rd. and Jones Avenue properties were reorganized, a permanent fulltime groundskeeper was engaged (A.M. Levy) and adminstration was improved. The other cemeteries remained outside of this new organization which was named the Amalgamated Dawes Road Trustees. Some of these made their own arrangements. Canadian Jewish Congress lent its administrative help to the Amalgamated Dawes Rd. Trustees, hence this committee.

Series consists of general files of the Cemetery Commitee.

Admin History/Bio
The Amalgamated Dawes Road Trustees (ADRT) is a non-profit body that was established in 1950. Its primary mandate has been to oversee and maintain the Jewish cemetery located at Dawes Road, which was established around 1903. This has involved maintaining the grounds, fixing and straightening monuments, and beautifying the surroundings. All funds that they receive are spent on the maintenance of the cemetery. In 1953, the ADRT took over responsibility for the Jones Avenue cemetery as well, at the request of Beth Tzedec Congregation after the merger of its two predecessor congregations who owned the two cemeteries.
Previously, ADRT reported to the Canadian Jewish Congress, however, was an autonomous entity with independent decision-making powers. The Trustees that run it are drawn from the congregations and societies who own plots at these two cemeteries. During the early years, there were also representatives from the CJC and the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto.
In 1950, there were 34 groups that possessed cemetery plots, and today, there are 51. Some of the larger and more prominent ones include Beth Tzedec, Temple Sinai, Beth Emeth, Beth David, the Toronto Hebrew Benevolent Society, the United Jewish People's Order and the Keltzer Sick Benefit Society. The ADRT office was originally located at 150 Beverley Street. It later relocated to 3169 St. Clair Avenue East, closer to the cemetery.
Custodial History
The records appear to have been donated by Kurt Kramer, Administrative Secretary for the Amalgamated Dawes Road Trustees.
Scope and Content
The records in this fonds were produced by the ADRT and support their activities. They include legal documents, correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes, perpetual care trusts, auditor reports, interment information, burial certificates, foundation documents, burial charts and a small number of blueprints.
Notes
Associated material note: the Canadian Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto has produced a database for the burial records and has placed 13,000 entries from the Dawes Road cemetery on the Jewish Gen JOBR Web site.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of records created and accumulated by the Moses family. The types of records include cemetery papers, such as correspondence, account receipts and the original constitution for Hasiatyner Klaus Beth Israel.
Also included are the original cemetery plans with the official stamp and seal and a copy of the blueprints for the Eitz Chiam School
Administrative History
Isadore Moses moved his family to Canada in 1928. He became president of Toronto’s Husiatiner Klaus Shul, volunteered to co-design Bathurst Lawn Cemetery’s floor plan, and was committed to Jewish education.
His son Lewis Moses, the youngest of seven children, was also deeply committed to the Jewish community. Despite running a busy chartered accountancy practice, the former air force officer devoted much of his energy to Jewish causes. He worked diligently for the Zionist Revisionist Organization, United Jewish Appeal, United Israel Appeal, State of Israel Bonds, Jewish National Fund, Canadian Zionist Federation, the Board of Jewish Education, Eitz Chaim Schools, and many other organizations. He was co-founder of Torath Emeth Congregation and a Board Member of Shaarei Shomayim Congregation. Lewis Moses was honoured at the Negev dinner in 1992

1665 photographs (approx.) ; b&w ; 10 x 15 cm
Date
[ca. 1997]-[ca. 1999]
Scope and Content
This accession consists of photographs of headstones at the Roselawn Cemetery in Toronto. The photographs were taken by volunteers working on the project which meant to capture genealogical information from the Jewish cemeteries around Toronto. Some of the information from the stones have been uploaded to the JewishGen's burial registry database, however, the photographs contain additional information such as Hebrew names and birth and death dates.
Taken alongside the stone in each photograph is an accompanying marker indicating the section and row of the grave, which corresponds to a physical list filed with each binder. Researchers will have to search for the deceased person's name on JewishGen first and locate the section and row of the stone, before being able to find the photograph in the binders.
Administrative History
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) was formally established in 1985. It is now one of seven Jewish genealogical societies in Canada. Its mission is to stimulate interest in the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research; to facilitate the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research locally and globally; and to provide an environment for fellowship and mutual exchange among persons with an interest in Jewish genealogy.
