Scope and Content
Accession consists of one black and white photograph taken during the Second World War depicting a group of Jewish men and women who met for services and socializing once a week in the basement of the Sons of Jacob Congregation in Belleville, Ontario. Pictured in the photograph are Ruth Wise (back row, far right) and Rabbi Gedaliah Felder (centre).
Custodial History
Michelle Speyer donated the photograph to the Archives at the request of her grandmother Ruth Speyer (née Wise), who is pictured in the photograph.
Administrative History
Ruth Molly Wise was born in 1926 to Eva and William Wise. She grew up in Belleville, Ontario, where she was part of a group of women at Beth Jacob Congregation that prepared meals for Jewish service men stationed at an air force base in Trenton. When she was 16, Ruth moved to Toronto, where she stayed with relatives for two years. She changed her name to Ruth Speyer when she married Mark Speyer. The two were married for 59 years during which time they had three children: Bruce, Michael, and Lloyd. Mark and Ruth were involved with Beth Tzedec for many years and had been part of Goel Tzedec before it merged with the McCaul Street Synagogue. Mark and Ruth were also founding members of the Island Yacht Club, to which they were very devoted.

Ruth Schwartz was the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Schwartz, and had three sisters, Sylvia, Fanny and Helen.
A respected Toronto bookseller, the Ruth Schwartz Children’s Book Award was established in 1976 by Sylvia Schwartz in her honour. In 2004, the Schwartz family renamed the award the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards. The administration of this award is shared by the Ontario Arts Council which selects the juries, the Ontario Arts Council Foundation and the Canadian Booksellers Association, whose members select the short list of books.

Scope and Content
File contains notes on the barbecue and Festival by staff coordinator Ronit Climan; a list of corporate donors; a rental agreement for golf carts; and several different thank you letters. There are also 60 photographs of the Festival, most of which are of the entertainment. These include performers on stage, shots of audience members dancing, clowns, a cowboy magician and trampolinists. There are also some pictures of the petting zoo, of families and of Federation staff working at the event.

Admin History/Bio
Ruth (Grossman) Godfrey was the daughter of Rose and Moses Grossman. Ruth's siblings included Esther and Anne (Pescoe). The Grossman family left Galacia due to pogroms in 1921 and settled in Canada. Ruth married Bert Godfrey (b. 1 June 1908), son of Minnie (Reisman) and Solomon. Bert became the President of S. Godfrey Co., a wool import and export company founded by Samuel Godfrey and was also the founding president of Beth Tzedec Synagogue. Ruth and Bert had two children, Corrine Leigh and Sheldon J.
An organization executive, Ruth acted as president of both the Scopus Chapter of Hadassah and of the UJA Service Council and an executive officer of fundraising for the Home for the Aged, the UJA and the United Jewish Welfare Fund. She was also involved with the Federation of Women's Organizations and the Jewish Public Library in Toronto.
