- Administrative History
- Maurice Strauss, a weightlifting champion, was born in Poland in 1929. When he was two, he moved to Brussels with his parents and older sister. A younger brother was born in Brussels. Like his father, Maurice eventually became a tailor. His father made strategic moves to protect the family, such as sending Maurice's sister to work as a maid for a non-Jewish family. Maurice wa able to move around freely by using the papers of a friend who was shot. His youngest brother did not make it out alive: he died of tuberculosis in the concentration camps. Maurice, his sister, and parents came to Toronto in 1929.
- Eventually, Maurice opened up Sunny Cleaners at Sunnyside. In 1964, he opened a menswear store at Yonge and Eglinton called Maurice Menswear. He had acumen as a businessman despite his grade seven education. He owned three laundry mat locations
- He married Ruth Speigel in 1956. She was from a cultured family. Maurice went on to university, as he felt that this was important. He studied business and French and received an honours degree. He attempted to go to Teachers College but didn't get in. He did, however, received a business degree at the age of fifty-eight. At sixty, he taught at a high school in Etobicoke; he also taught at CHAT.
- His weightlifting career began in Brussels. When he came to Toronto, he was at an advantage because of his European training, which was more advanced than Canada's athletic training. When he arrived in Toronto, he worked out at the YMHA on Brunswick and then at the newly opened YMHA at Bloor. He also coached weightlifting there.
- The family was raised in Bathurst Manor on Baycrest Avenue, where Maurice bought a home in 1957. Maureice had three sons. While the children grew up, they went to the Bathurst JCC regularly. "It was their religion," according to son Daniel. Son Joel was also a successful weightlifter and participated in the Commonwealth Games.

- Scope and Content
- Accession consists of four photographs of Morris "Murray" Rose. Three of the four photographs show Murray atop horse. In addition to M. Rose, Mrs. J Chesney (owner) and J. Chesny (trainer) are also identified in the 1929 photograph.
- Custodial History
- The photographs were donated by Roz Tobias, the daughter-in-law of Morris Rose (the subject of the photographs).
- Administrative History
- Morris "Murray" Rose was born in Poland and came to Toronto as a child. His love of riding dates back to this time: at the age of ten, he would ride his grandfather's horse up and down the lanes of Kensington. Rose never completed secondary school; instead, he ran away from home at the age of fourteen and became a stable boy at the Woodbine Racetrack. Subsequently, he became a jockey. The high point of his career came on 23 May 1931, when, at the Churchill Downs Racetrack in Kentucky, he ran five winners in a six-card race. Rose retired from riding horses after sustaining a serious head injury during a race.
- After retiring from racing, Rose worked at a textile store on College Street. Later, he opened his own store on the south side of College Street at Spadina Avenue. He and his wife ran the store for many years with one or two employees. Rose eventually purchased the building in which his store was located and rented out space to a variety of businesses, including a smoke and confectionary store, a ticket agency, and an eyeglass store.
- Rose's entrepreneurial activity extended to purchasing bankrupt businesses and building apartment buildings with a group of friends. In the 1960s, he was a co-partner in Triangle Billiards at Bathurst Sreet and Sheppard Avenue. He also purchased a fifty-acre farm in Buttonville on Woodbine Avenue, which he rented out until his death.
- Rose died in July 1989 at the age of seventy-eight. He left behind a wife, Mary; two sons, Bobby and Ken; two daughters, Marjorie Swartz and Elaine Rubinoff; two sisters, Lil and Rae; a brother, Sam; fourteen grand children; and one great-grandchild.

- Scope and Content
- Item is a copy of the third edition of the Naomi Cook Book. The third edition appeared in 1948 with a second printing in 1950.
- Custodial History
- The cook book was in the possession of the donor's mother-in-law, Rose Evelyn Yolleck (née Saunders), at the time of her death. It is unclear when or how she acquired it. The donor and her husband found it among other recipe books and magazines.
- Administrative History
- Rose Evelyn Yolleck (née Saunders) was born in London, England in 1925. Rose's father passed away when she was an infant; consequently, she was raised by her mother, Sarah. Rose had two older brothers: Mossy, who remained in England, and Henry, who immigrated to Ontario and settled in St. Catherines.
- Rose immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s, settling in Toronto. In the mid-1950s, she married Samuel "Sam" Yolleck. Rose worked as a model with Sam, who sold coats along Canada's east coast. Later, Rose and Sam formed a collection agency, Power Corporation.
- Rose often created award-winning costumes for various celebrations. She was also the chairperson of her condominum's social group and planned quarterly excursions to Casino Niagara until a few months before her ninety-forth birthday.
- Reform Jews, Rose and Sam were members of Temple Sinai Congregation. Sam died on December 16, 1995; Rose died on January 30, 2019. She is survived by sons Stephen Yolleck and Jeff Yolleck, daughter-in-law Phyllis Rubenstein Yolleck, and grandson Ethan.
