Custodial History
Frances Jacobson, Stan Jacobson's widow, mailed the records that constitute the accession to Annie Matan who is responsible for Jewish Life and Family Engagement at Miles Nadal Jewish JCC. Annie in turn got the records to Dara Solomon who passed them to Michael Friesen to accession.
Administrative History
Stan Jacobson (1968-2015) was a Canadian television producer known for his work on the Wayne & Shuster Comedy Show 1965-1967), The Johnny Cash Show (1969-1971), the 1988 Winter Olympics, and the opening of the SkyDome (1989).
Stanley Jacobson was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on 23 June 1930 to Joseph and Sadie Jacobson. When Stan was young, the family moved to Montreal, which was his mother's hometown. Upon graduating high school, he attended Sir George Williams University, which, upon merging with Loyola College, eventually became Concordia University.
For a time, Stan worked in the rag trade, but eventually got involved in theatre. An early hit came in the form of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Stan succeeded in negotiating the rights to produce the stage comedy outside of New York while it was still running on Broadway, which he regarded as his proudest achievement. Not long after, he began working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a writer for several variety programs and even wrote and directed a documentary on the Battle of Britain that was released in 1966.
When Johnny Cash was invited to sing at the White House, he brought along Stan and his wife Frances as two of his guests.
When The Johnny Cash Show ended its run in 1971, Stan and his wife moved to Los Angeles only to return to Toronto a short time later. Thereafter, he commuted back and forth between LA and Toronto and worked on several programs for CTV. He also worked on a sitcom for ABC called Viva Valdez, but it was not a success.
Stan died in North York, Ontario on 1 Dec. 2015. He left behind his wife Frances; a sister-in-law, Grace; two nephews; two grand nephews; and one grand niece.

Admin History/Bio
The Meyer W. Gasner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1974, and incorporated in 1977. The fund was named in honour of Meyer Gasner (1906-1974), a successful businessman and leader in the Toronto Jewish community. Gasner always took a great interest in Jewish education, was one of the founders of Associated Hebrew Schools, and served on the board of the BJE. The fund provided scholarships for post-secondary Jewish education to students who intended to pursue a career in Jewish education. Sam Sable and Rabbi Irwin Witty were the initiators of the fund and served as officers of the corporation. Other officers included the well-known philanthropists Kurt Rothschild and Joseph Tanenbaum. Although the fund was not formally affiliated with the BJE, BJE staff carried out routine administrative work for the fund, distributed application forms and accepted applications, which were then passed on to the Meyer W. Gasner Memorial Scholarship Committee for consideration. The first scholarships were awarded in 1976.
Raising the capital funds needed to support the regular awarding of scholarships proved difficult. The committee was unable to award scholarships every year, and not in the amounts they would have liked. The fund continued to operate until 1998, and granted scholarships to approximately 200 students during its existence. At the end of 1998, the fund ceased operations and its remaining assets were transferred to the UJA Federation's Meyer W. Gasner/Joe Berman Educational Scholarship Fund.
Scope and Content
The series documents the founding of the fund, its financial performance over the years, and the decisions of the scholarship fund committee in awarding scholarships. The series consists of committee meeting minutes, audited financial statements, correspondence with committee members and scholarship applicants, and promotional material for the scholarship. The files in the series are arranged chronologically.

Sub-series consists of the Research files of the Community Relations Committee, and has been divided into separate categories in a further 9 sub-sub-series; Civil liberties, Elections, Israel, Religious education in the public schools, Government funding of Jewish day schools, Hate crimes and hate literature, War crimes and criminals, Small Ontario Jewish communities, and General office records. For more detailed descriptions of these, please view scope and contents notes at the sub-sub-series level.
Notes
Previously processed and cited as part of MG8 S.
Related Material
Library and Archives of Canada holds the records for the National B’nai Brith which contains 30cm of material on the National Joint Community Relations Committee. The Canadian Jewish Congress National Archives in Montreal holds the records for the National Joint Community Relations Committee, which contains some files on the Ontario Region, as they reported to the National office. The whereabouts of the B’nai Brith records pertaining to the Central Region activities are currently unknown.
Arrangement
Because records in this sub-series had previously been organized in a manner that proved impossible for use by archivists and researchers, they have been totally rearranged and described to comply with RAD standards, to provide ease of access by researchers, and to fully reflect the activities and organizational history of the Community Relations Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress during and after the period when it was a joint committee with the B'Nai Brith.
