Admin History/Bio
The Zionist Organization was founded by Theodor Herzl at the First Zionist Congress in Basle in 1897; it was renamed the World Zionist Organization in 1960. Its goals were set forth in the Basle Program: "Zionism seeks to establish a home for the Jewish people in Palestine, secured under public law." The right of membership in the ZO was given to anyone who accepted the Basle Program and purchased the Zionist shekel (dues). The first constitution was passed by the Third Congress in 1899 and amended over the years.
At the First Zionist Congress, the Zionist movement organized itself as a worldwide organization with permanent institutions. The supreme institution was, and still is, the Zionist Congress. The elected institutions that function between congresses are the Zionist General Council and the Zionist Executive; the latter carries out the movement's policies. The Zionist Congress also elects a law court, an attorney and a comptroller. The Zionist Executive is headed by its chairman, who is also the president of the ZO.
Since its foundation, the ZOC has established companies and institutions to carry out its policies; these include Keren Hayesod, the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish Colonial Trust, and the Jewish Colonial Trust's subsidiary, the Anglo-Palestine Bank.
The WZO holds a congress every four years, which is used as a forum to bring members of the organization from around the world together and discuss ideas as well as elect new officials.
Scope and Content
The records in this series primarily document the 28th World Zionist Congress which was held in 1972. The files consist of material which include: biographies of participants; election committees; resolutions; names of delegates; photographs; and election rules.
The series also contains material documenting the election process of executives that took place in Canada and was arranged by ZOC.

Admin History/Bio
During the Second World War, Dunkelman served as a major in the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. After enlisting in 1940, he became a platoon commander. Dunkelman took part in the second wave of D-Day landings in 1944 and later assisted in the final Allied assault on Germany, earning the Distinguished Service Order. He left the army in 1945 after the war had ended. The Queen's Own Rifles Association and the Canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute of Science organized a reception in 1976 to honour the publication of Dunkelman's autobiography, Dual Allegiance.
Scope and Content
Series consists of records documenting Ben Dunkelman's involvement in the Second World War. Included are newspaper clippings, maps, photographs, and correspondence. Some files deal with Dunkelman's experiences during the war; others relate to Dunkelman's relationship with veterans after the war and, in one case, with his memories of the war. The files cover such subjects as The Queen's Own Rifles, Veterans, the liberation of The Netherlands, Aubrey Cosens (a soldier under Dunkelman’s command who was killed in battle but later honoured with the Victoria Cross), and the prosecution of Nazi war criminals.

Admin History/Bio
The World Festival of Youth and Students is a left-wing/socialist youth festival that has been held every two years since 1947. The festival in Vienna was the seventh of its kind since the war and attracted 18,000 young people from 112 countries. It was held over the period of two weeks in July 1959. The festival was organized by the National Federation of Labour Youth with delegations organized by the Young Communist League of Canada. Canada sent 150 delegates to the festival.
Sylvia probably travelled there to photograph the festival as it advocated and supported ideas about socialism, equality and world peace, all of which she shared. Her friend, Paul Robeson, who she was visiting in England in the months prior to the festival also performed and spoke at the event.
Scope and Content
File consists of images of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Vienna, Austria. Images include views of Vienna, the Prater festival grounds and various individuals from the opening parade, as well as an image of Ella Fitzgerald performing.

Scope and Content
This accession contains the records created by JIAS Canada, the national office of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Service, from 1988 to 2001. This includes executive correspondence, committee material, conference material, reference material, financial and budgetary records, executive and officer meeting schedules, minutes and reports, community relief files and administrative files.
Custodial History
The records were stored in the offices of JIAS Canada until donated to the archives on 2006-08-29.
Administrative History
Established in 1920 by the newly-formed Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), The Jewish Immigrants Aid Society of Canada (which also operated under the moniker of the Emergency Jewish Immigrant Aid Committee), JIAS (now the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services), was charged with organizing emergency relief for European Jews in distress following the pogroms in the former Russian Empire and the First World War. It later became the central agency of the Jewish community to facilitate the lawful entry of Jewish immigrants into Canada and provided them with welfare services, transportation, and assistance with accommodation and employment after their arrival.
In addition, JIAS offered consultation services for sponsors of potential immigrants, ran a competitive foreign remittance service, and campaigned to counter the activities of unscrupulous steamboat agents, lawyers and influence peddlers, or “shtadlanim”, who often victimized immigrants and sponsors alike. JIAS was also actively engaged in negotiating for the increased admission of Jewish immigrants to Canada, in conjunction with similar efforts by the CJC.
JIAS was organized into a National Office in Montreal and a series of regional offices located in various other Canadian cities. The JIAS National Office moved from Montreal to Toronto in 1989, with the appointment of Susan Davis to National Director, and is now located at 4580 Dufferin St., Suite 306, Toronto, Ontario.
