UJA Federation’s Walk with Israel was first held in May 1970, when it was called the UJA Walkathon. The first Walk was organized quickly with no advance publicity, yet it still raised $55,000. In the early years, funds raised in the Walk went into UJA’s Israel Special Fund. Since then, the money has supported particular projects in Israel that often involve children, since children are the main fundraisers in the event. The Walk with Israel has grown into the largest event in the Toronto Jewish community, with over 20,000 people participating as volunteers or walkers, and funds raised reaching as high as $400,000. The event has had several name changes since 1970: Walk for Israel (1978-1993); Community March for Israel (1994-1996); Israel Funwalk (1998-2002); and the current name, Walk with Israel.
The Walk with Israel is one of the programs mounted by the Annual Campaign department of UJA Federation. It is planned by a Cabinet Committee, with one or two laypeople as chairs, and numerous sub-committees. The main UJA staff undertaking the planning and execution is the Walk Coordinator. Each year, sub-committees are formed for recruitment, logistics, marketing and public relations, the Festival, food, entertainment, etc. The Walk also involves many outside entities: companies approached for prizes, donations or sponsorship; entertainment groups; the Toronto police force, which provides traffic control, marshalling and a parade permit; city government, for park use permits and outdoor signage; community groups mounting displays; costumed character rental companies; and manufacturers of the t-shirts, hats and buttons produced each year for Walk participants.
In addition to being a major fundraiser, the Walk fashioned itself initially as a fitness challenge to children and athletes, with a route as long as 31 kilometres in 1976. Over the years, this length has been reduced significantly, with the event evolving into a more manageable and family-oriented event. In the last decade, with periods of tension overseas, it has been framed as a demonstration of solidarity with Israel. Alongside the main event, alternative fundraisers such as a large Raffle, Dance-a-thon, Aerob-a-thon and Learn-a-thon for Eitz Chaim day schools, have been held in some years to encourage more people to contribute. Incentives for those who collect sponsors have grown over the years, from free t-shirts to a succession of prizes depending on the amount of funds raised. The grand prize draw for many years was two El Al airline tickets to Israel.
The location of the Walk has moved from the Bathurst Street 'corridor' of the Jewish community, to a downtown route that for some years went through the historic Jewish neighbourhood of Kensington Market and more recently, begins and ends at Coronation Park by the lakeshore and winds around the downtown streets. There is now also a kick-off party at the Walk’s starting point. Since 1984, the Walk has culminated in a big festival, featuring rides, petting zoos, a barbecue, musical entertainment, clowns and other attractions. This was usually held in a park or the BJCC parking lot. When the Walk route moved downtown, the Festival shifted to Ontario Place, and more recently, it has taken place on the CNE grounds by the lakeshore. Since 2007, the Festival has been sponsored by RioCan, and 'yogen fruz' became a major sponsor of the Walk in 2008. Other Walk sponsors have included Roots Canada (supplier of t-shirts), Shopper’s Drug Mart, Henry’s camera centre, Canada Trust, National Bank Financial Group, and the Canadian Zionist Federation.
Scope and Content
Sub-series contains records that document the planning and coordination of the Walk for Israel each year, as well as photographs and other records from the day itself and post-walk evaluation and wrap-up activities. The records include meeting notices, agendas and minutes, information sheets, lists, schedules, sitemaps, correspondence, school presentations, permits, press releases, design work, invoices, flyers, and photographs. Materials distibuted to participants include walker passports that had to be verified at each checkpoint, sponsor books, collection envelopes, tickets and other ephemera.
Most of the records have been arranged by year, broken down by function, in the following order: Walk oversight (the Walk Committee and chairs); recruitment of participants; volunteers; logistics such as route and police/security coverage; publicity and public relations, design of memorabilia (i.e. hats); sponsorship and prizes; financial management; the Walk event itself; the Festival; related fundraisers, particularly the Eitz Chaim Day Schools Learnathon; and post-event evaluation. The Festival records document the planning of food, entertainment, displays, amusements, and volunteers, and include photographs taken on the day of the event.
Sub-series 17-1 also includes individual files containing photographs from ranges of years. These were added to this series after the major portion of the "Walk" records had already been processed.

Reproduction restriction note: Though there is no textual evidence indicating ownership of copyright, it is believed that all rights to the Graphic Artists negatives in this sub-series were transferred to UJA Federation (Communications department), since they were the ultimate possessors of the negatives. Copyright for photographs by Stephen Epstein remains in his possession. Other UJA staff photographs by Eve Marks are the physical and intellectual property of UJA Federation.

The theme of the 1991 Walk for Israel, held on Sunday, June 2, was "Operation Exodus: The Journey Home." This corresponded to UJA Federation's campaign that year. The goal of the Walk was to raise enough money for 500 Russian Jews (two planeloads) to make Aliyah to Israel. Each of the eight checkpoints portrayed a different theme or "step" to freedom: "invitation to freedom," "permission to freedom," "flight to freedom," etc. Great effort was made to expand recruitment from the traditional children who participated, to reach parents and other adults from UJA's divisions. The chairs of the Walk were David William Brown and David Engel, and the UJA staff coordinator was Avrum Rosensweig. Sponsors included Shopper's Drug Mart, Spring Valley spring water, Beatrice Foods, and Meadowvale Security. There were 8500 participants this year, but only 2700 of these collected any sponsors, a fact that highlights a longstanding problem facing the Walk Committee. After the event, expenditures were estimated at $23,000 and revenue (from the Festival) at $14,000. The difference was made up by UJA.
The Festival in 1991 was called "The Journey Home: Sharing Our Ethnicity" and it focussed on the multi-culturalism in the Toronto Jewish community. This year, the Festival was re-visioned as a family picnic type of event rather than the expansive carnival atmosphere of previous years. The staff coordinator of the Festival was Mark Freedman, and the lay chairs were Judy Engel and Judy Shulman. The Festival included arts and crafts, puppets, storytellers, games, pony rides and a petting zoo. There was also a varied line-up of performers and musicians, and an "Israeli cafe" food experience.

The theme of the 1992 Walk for Israel was "From Toronto to the Heart of Our Homeland." This Jerusalem-centred theme was selected because the day of the walk, Sunday May 31st, coincided with the 25th anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification, hence the festival held this year was named the 'Yom Yerushalayim Celebration.' The Walk was chaired by Judy Engel and Judy Shulman, and coordinated by UJA Federation staff member Pearl Gropper. The Yom Yerushalayim Celebration was first to be held at Earl Bales Park until logistical difficulties necessitated a change to the northern JCC/Lipa Green Building area. The Celebration was chaired by Moishe and Jodi Gottesman. As in the past three years, the checkpoints along the route were run by affiliates of UJA.

The 1993 Walk for Israel was held on Monday, May 24. Its informal slogan was "$45 for 45 Years," in recognition of Israel's 45th anniversary. Participants who raised the minimum of $45 received a free t-shirt. The t-shirts for the event had a different slogan than "$45 for 45 Years"; they read, "Building Our Community Together." When participants handed in their funds before the event, they were also eligible for other prizes including roller blades, Blue Jays' tickets and bicycles. Over 6,000 people took part in the Walk and over $150,000 were raised.
The 1993 Walk was co-chaired by Judy Engel and Alan Winer and coordinated by UJA staff person Ronit Climan. The route started in Earl Bales Park, went south to Wilson and over to Avenue Road, then south to Eglinton, back to Bathurst via Chaplin Crescent, then north on Bathurst to the Festival at the Bathurst JCC.
This year, the Walk was supplemented by other "athons": a dance-a-thon for youth co-sponsored by BBYO and the Walk and an aerobathon organized by the JCC and the Walk. The aerobathon drew 40 participants. Additionally, as in years past, students at the Eitz Chaim Day School held a Learnathon, which raised $18,000.

In 1997, the March for Israel reverted to its traditional name, the Walk for Israel. The slogan was "Steppin' Out for Israel" and the event took place on Sunday, May 25th. Its chair was Carole Sterling and for the first time, there were three UJA staff coordinators: Silvia Astrug, Naomi Lasky and Karen Worb. The Festival was chaired by Marcy Kroach and Gilda Niman. The route was the same as in the past several years, beginning at the Promenade Shopping Centre and going south to the North York Centennial Arena where the Festival was held. In addition, a second route was introduced, a much shorter one that started later in the day to allow more people to participate; it led from the BJCC north to the Arena on Finch Avenue.

In 2002, reacting to the recent wave of violence in Israel, the Walk was renamed the Walk with Israel to underline that it was an act of community solidarity. With a new slogan, "Now. More Than Ever," the Walk was scheduled for May 20, 2002. The money raised went towards helping children affected by the crisis in Israel. The chairs were Abe Glowinsky and Elyza Polsky, with Coordinator Naomi Cohen and Administrator Cindy Bogach. Special guests were Mayor Mel Lastman, Israeli Consul-General Meir Romen and Ra'anin Gissin, key advisor and principal spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon. Gissin gave the keynote speech at the Festival.
In addition to the usual sub-committees, there was a new one: School Projects. These were artistic menorahs created by each school that were displayed at the Festival. Once again, the 5 kilometre adult Fun Run took place. A new route this year took participants in a loop from the Sky Dome, north and across Nassau/Cecil/Elm streets, then south again on Bay Street to the Sky Dome, where the Festival was held. The Festival featured attractions from MEGA (Mandell Entertainment Group Amusements) such as 'inflatables', as well as an Israeli-style shuk (open air market). A record crowd of almost 25,000 people turned out.

In 2003, the Walk with Israel took place on Sunday, May 25th, featuring a brand new 5 kilometre route from Coronation Park at the lakeshore, around downtown Toronto and back to the National Trade Centre at the C.N.E. grounds. The slogan this year was "Together We're Stronger" and more than 20,000 people came out to show their support for Israel. Approximately $500,000 was raised. The Walk culminated in a Festival at the National Trade Centre that had a drumming workshop and a 7-foot Magen David made out of balloons.

The kick-off party at Coronation Park featured an attempt to create the world's largest hora. The RioCan Festival at Ontario Place following the walk featured an Israel mini-mall. The event drew nearly 20,000 people.

In 2005, the Walk with Israel introduced its first-ever mascot. A city-wide competition to name the lion brought in 250 suggestions from children; the winning name was Arr-yeah, a combination of a cheer and the Hebrew word for lion, "aryeh." Close to 15,000 people, including 800 volunteers, turned out for the event on Sunday, May 29th. There were four co-chairs this year: Beth Singer, Nelly Zagdanski, Sara Zagdanksi and Felicia Posluns. Mike "Pinball" Clemens of the Toronto Argonauts appeared at the kick-off party, and the crowd was led by Police Chief Bill Blair. The 6 kilometre downtown route began at Coronation Park near the gates to the C.N.E., and ended up at Ontario Place for the RioCan Festival.

The Walk with Israel of 2006 took place on Sunday, May 28th. The day started with a kick-off party in Coronation Park that included a dance party. Then the route led north and east to Spadina, west back to Bathurst, north to Dundas, west, then south again along Strachan Avenue to the RioCan Carnival at Ontario Place. This year the Walk featured three "nosh stops"; those wanting a shorter route had the option to finish at the first one. Participants were also able to register and collect sponsors online. About $350,000 were raised for youth at risk. The event was co-chaired by Felicia Posluns, Nelly Zagdanski and Sara Zagdanski. The Walk Director on the UJA staff was Michelle Golfman.

The 2007 Walk with Israel was held on Sunday, May 27th. It started with a kick-off party in Coronation Park by the waterfront, which featured inflatables and music. Prominent attendees were Federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion, Environment Minister John Baird and more than 20 other elected officials. The Walk was co-chaired by Ruth Eckstein and Helen Silverstein. The largest incentive for those raising money was to be a "chai walker": if one raised $1800, one had the choice of a $500 prize and was invited onstage during the kick-off party. With a threatening weather forecast, only 7,000 people came out. The fundraising cause was a new daycare centre in northern Israel and providing employment training to Ethiopian women in a community near Tel Aviv.
At the end of the 10 kilometre route, people enjoyed the kosher barbecue, games, rides and arts and crafts at the RioCan Carnival at Ontario Place.

The 2008 Walk with Israel took place on Sunday, May 25th. It was chaired by Ruth Ekstein and Helen Silverstein. The Walk Director at UJA was Michelle Golfman, who was assisted by staff Ellen Drazner, Shimmy Wenner and Elena Livertovsky. In the wake of recent rocket attacks from Gaza, a portion of the $500,000 raised was earmarked for children and their families in Sderot and the Western Negev. New to the Walk this year was an inter-school competition to raise the most money. There were many incentives and the "top 60" were recognized in honour of Israel's 60th birthday. A new and major sponsor of the Walk this year was 'yogen fruz'.
The day began with a kick-off party in Coronation Park, then followed a square route around downtown Toronto as far north as Dundas Street, and returned to the lakefront for the RioCan Carnival at the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place. A shorter route, ending at the first Rest Stop, formed the Bubbie Zaidie Walk. The crowd numbered more than 15,000 and included Federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion and Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman.

In 1978, the Walkathon was renamed the Walk for Israel, a name that highlighted the event's connection to Israel. The Walk's theme was celebrating 30 years of Israel's statehood, emphasized with a 30 kilometre route. The Walk was chaired by David Bloom and was distinguished by the amount of competition it involved. Walkers could sign up in teams and compete to raise the most money and/or cover the greatest distance. Teams were registered from schools, brotherhoods, clubs, youth groups, and various professions. A number of professional athletes, from the Toronto Argos, Maple Leafs, and Blue Jays, were present at various checkpoints to greet walkers. About 9000 people turned out on the day of the Walk, which finished up with a gala birthday celebration at Earl Bales Park.

In 1979 the Walk with Israel had a second name: the Canada-Israel Friendship Walk. This name highlighted the year's focus on walking for Israel's children, although the official name was still used. The Walk featured sports and show business personalities signing autographs, and drew 12,000 participants. Continuing with the Bathurst corridor route, the Walk started at the BJCC, went south to St. Clair and back to Earl Bales Park.
The Walk this year also featured an Early Bird prize. First introduced in 1978, the Early Bird draw was an incentive for walkers to collect and return their pledges soon after the walk. Those who did so within two weeks of the Walk had their names entered in a draw to win one of a number of prizes donated by local businesses.

The 1980 Walk for Israel took place on Sunday, May 25. It was chaired by Verne Chelin and Jerry Panet, and the TJC staff coordinator was Mark Gryfe. New to the Walk this year was a "leadership mile" in which 25 prominent community leaders participated. These included Solicitor-General, Robert Kaplan; provincial minister of industry, trade and tourism, Larry Grossman; Toronto alderman, Art Eggleton; John Roberts; Toronto Jewish Congress president, Wilfred Posluns; Murray Koffler; and MIlton Harris. The 11 checkpoints along the 25 kilometre route were named after Israeli cities. 13,000 people turned out for the event.
Part of the Walk's promotion included a letter from Henry "The Fonz" Winkler to the students of Jewish schools in Toronto. The popular celebrity could not attend the Walk, but in his letter, he expressed encouragement for the students' fundraising efforts and wished them well.

The 1981 Walk for Israel took place on Sunday, May 3. Its theme was "Walk for the Youth of Israel," since monies raised went to build a sports complex for the children of Mazkeret Batya. Advertised highlights of the 1981 Walk included Al Waxman, a celebrity photo booth, the Blue Jays Bird, Mr. Peanut, and the Toronto Argos cheerleaders. The Walk ended with a celebration of the northern JCC's (BJCC's) twentieth anniversary. As an adjunct fundraiser, a 15-hour Danceathon, was held at the BJCC, where participants could dance from 11 pm to 2 pm the next day. The Danceathon was organized by Ruth Lootsteen and Jack Samuel.

In 1982, UJA's Walk for Israel took place on 2 May and had a twenty-five-kilometre route. It was chaired by Verne Chelin and Jerry Panet. The walk celebrated its bar mitzvah year in 1982 with a celebration and carnival at the route's end at the BJCC. The cause for which funds were raised was the construction of a community centre in the town of Beit Dagar in Israel. Special appearances were made along the walk route by Miss Toronto 1981, the Coca Cola robot, and a giant Smurf. An adjunct fundraiser, the 15-Hour Danceathon, was held for the second year.

It was chaired by veteran Walk chairs Jerry Panet and Verne Chelin, and the cause was the construction of a community centre for Beit Dagon. Attractions along the 25 kilometre route included Big Bird, a Smurf, and Miss Canada. A draw was held for anyone who raised at least $50; the grand prize was two round trip tickets to Israel courtesy of El Al airlines. The Walk route began at the Bathurst and Sheppard plaza, and the day finished with a Lag B'Omer celebration in the parking lot of the BJCC. In these years, the Walk began around 7:30 in the morning, with volunteers arriving to set up as early as 4:30 am.

The 1984 Walk for Israel took place on Sunday, June 3rd, beginning at the Bathurst and Sheppard plaza and ending at the Bathurst JCC. The route was a new one and was 20 kilometres long. As per the usual procedure, walkers handed in their money at the first checkpoint. The Walk chairs this year were Bobby Katz and Larry Shapiro. As in past years, B'nai Brith manned the checkpoints and acted as marshalls in overseeing traffic safety. The Walk this year had all the features that had become tradition: refreshments at the checkpoints, cartoon characters, appearances by public figures, and the grand prize of two El Al tickets to Israel.

The 1985 Walk for Israel, held on Sunday, May 19th, was chaired by Bobby Katz and Larry Shapiro. "Celebrity" appearances along the 18 kilometre route included Toronto mayor Art Eggleton, Miss Canada, and Allison Hope of television's 20 Minute Workout. At the end of the Walk was the Yom Yerushalayim Festival in the parking lot of the BJCC. The festival included musical entertainment by the Stan Hiltz orchestra and the Spoons, karate demonstrations, and a replica of the Western Wall. For another year, El Al airlines donated two round trip tickets to Israel for a Grand Prize.

In 1986, 13,000 people participated in UJA's Walk for Israel, raising $180,000. This year, each checkpoint along the 18 kilometre route was named for one of Israel's eight prime ministers. The "Festival of Festivals" which ended the Walk, organized by UJA in support of Israel's children, marked Israel Independence Day. The festival featured booths set up by various community agencies.

The 18th annual Walk for Israel drew 12,000 participants, and an additional 3000 who came to the Festival. The Walk was held on Sunday, May 17th and had the traditional route -- 18 kilometres for the 18th Walk -- south along Bathurst to Eglinton and then north on Avenue Road/Bathurst to the Festival at the Bathurst JCC. The event came together, as always, with the energy and organization of hundreds of volunteers, as well as the UJA Committee chaired by Gloria Clamen. The money raised this year went towards a daycare centre in Kfar Gvirol. At the Festival, two artists in their eighties, Henry Weingluck and Hannah Sandberg, displayed their paintings. A bonfire for Lag B'Omer wrapped up the day.

The 1988 Walk was a celebration of Israel's 40th birthday. Held on Sunday, May 15th, it was chaired by Gloria Clamen and Barbara Lampcov. The day's radio communication network was headquarted as usual in the Lipa Green Building. One planning committee was dedicated to planning for accessibility on the Walk, and its chair, Helen Wolfe, led 70 people with physical and developmental disabilities along the route. "Celebrity" appearances included Olympic figure skating pair Lyndon Johnston and Denise Benning. The Festival at the BJCC included a gala carnival with rides and an open air café. Honourary cake cutters sliced an enormous blue and white birthday cake that measured 12 feet by 3 feet. The coordinator of the Festival was Ted Sokolsky; the coordinator of the Walk was David Gotfrid.

In 1989, the Walk Committee, headed by Elaine Lightstone, attempted to get an even larger turnout by having two routes that covered the expansive Jewish community area in Toronto. The north route commenced at the Promenade Mall on Bathurst north of Clark; the south route started at Bathurst and Lawrence. Where the two routes crossed, at Beth Tikvah Synagogue on Bayview Avenue, a checkpoint featured an art display by students of eight Toronto day schools. About 13,000 people came out to take part in the Walk, the theme of which was "Footsteps for Freedom." Funds raised supported the absorption of immigrants in Israel. As it had for many years, B'nai Brith manned several checkpoints, but it was joined this year by a number of UJA divisions: the New Leadership Council, Societies, Young Executives and Professionals, and Students. The UJA staff coordinators for the Walk and the Festival were Rosie Sosnowicz and David Gotfrid. New to the Festival this year were displays by Metro Toronto emergency services. The Festival was chaired by David and Judy Engel.
