Accession consists of digital photographs of 2007 Book of Life inductees and of former Foundation chair Liz Wolfe and her family. Administrative History
The Book of Life, established by the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto in 2003, is an ever-growing collection of family stories of the organization's donors. Each year the Foundation recognizes new donors who have left a legacy to the Jewish community by way of a bequest in their will, a life insurance policy, or with a permanent endowment fund at the Foundation. The Book of Life is stored at the Lipa Green Centre, where it is also available in digital format. It is also on the internet at www.feduja.org/bookoflife.
Descriptive Notes
"Book of Life" folder contains 170 photographs with various poses. "Photos" folder contains one image of each donor. "Liz Wolfe" photographs were taken for a feature article in a Foundation 'Report to the Community'.

Accession consists of an original stock certificate, No. 15, for one share of capital stock of Jewish Publications Limited. It is dated October 1, 1924, cost $15.00, was issued to Mr. F.W.J. Sewell, and is signed by A. D. (Arthur Daniel) Hart, president of the company.
Custodial History
The stock certificate was purchased on 1 October 1924 in Toronto by Frederick William James "Jimmy" Sewell, the grandfather of the donor, who inherited the document and maintained it until it was donated to this archives.
Administrative History
Jewish Publications Limited was founded in Toronto, probably in 1923 or 1924, by Arthur Daniel Hart. The company address was 85 Richmond Street West; Mr. Hart's residence was 1463 King St West. Its sole publication was a book: The Jew in Canada: A Complete Record of Canadian Jewry From the Days of the French Regime to the Present Time. It was compiled by Hart and published in 1926.

Scope and Content
The records consist of materials documenting the programs and social services administered by JIAS Toronto, predominantly from the 1960s through the 1990s. The records include reports and essays, case files, statistics reports, staff manuals and other resources, budget documents, minutes of meetings, resources JIAS produced for immigrants and resources from JIAS's education programs. Much of the material from the 1980s and 1990s deals with integration, particularly of Soviet Jews. There are records relating to the Integration Committee, the provision of "direct relief aid" and other services to clients, and research and analytical reports.
The earlier case files from 1935 and 1948-1981 concern reimbursement for immigrants' transportation costs. Later case files contain only one sheet, a case report, which includes personal and immigration information, occupation, remarks, sponsor’s information and an employment history. Some files also have: identification cards from United HIAS Service with sailing information; summary of assistance forms kept by JIAS case workers; and other administrative paperwork.

Partially closed. Researchers must receive permission from the OJA Director prior to accessing some of the records.

Accession consists of records documenting the Jewish War Veterans of Canada and its unfinished project to create a book relating to Canadian Jewish servicemen. Included are drafts of the book, correspondence relating to the book, a brochure, a commemorative dinner booklet, a newspaper clipping, and screen shots of the organization's now inactive website.
Administrative History
The Jewish War Veterans of Canada is an organization for Jewish veterans of all wars. The Toronto Post was formed in 1976 and sponsors community events, annual dinners, and assists veterans. Around 2005, the organization had plans to erect a monument at Earl Bales Park and publish a book to commemorate all Jewish veterans; however, the organization fell into financial trouble and this project never came to fruition. The Toronto Post has since undergone a complete change of leadership and continues to operate out of its office at 4600 Bathurst Street.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of one photograph of the sign from the Eastern Children of Israel Congregation, located on Parliament Street, just north of Shuter Street, in Toronto. The sign is in the shape of an arc and was situated on the second floor of a brick building between two windows. It was written in Hebrew and mentions both the synagogue and a Talmud Torah.
Custodial History
The photograph was in the possession of Dr. Dorothy Pullan. She mailed it to the OJA in September 2011.
Administrative History
The Eastern Children of Israel Synagogue (Bnai Israel Hamizrachim or Eastern Children's Congregation) was founded in a house on Berkeley Street before the First World War. Its first synagogue was built at 177-179 Berkeley Street and officially opened in 1918. A Talmud Torah was later added onto the back. The synagogue was bulldozed in 1960 to make way for the Moss Park housing project, although the land sat vacant until 1962. The synagogue subsequently moved to 270 Parliament street until 1962, just north of Shuter Street, but is no longer in existence.

Accession consists of 198 digital images on one CD documenting the groundbreaking, construction and dedication of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada monument on the Sherman Campus of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. The photographs were taken between September 11 and November 11, 2011.

The images were on the personal computer of Amek Adler, Vice-President of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada and chair of the monument committee. They were copied onto CD for the archives.

Accession consists of records documenting the activities of the Jewish Theatre Committee. Included is correspondence, press releases, theatre programs and handbills, scripts, meeting minutes and agendas and photographs of members of the committee.

The records were in the possession of Ralph Wintrob, chair of the Jewish Theatre Committee during the late 1980s and 1990s.
Administrative History
The Jewish Theatre Committee was founded in 1984 as a standing committee of the Toronto Jewish Cultural Council of the Toronto Jewish Congress. Its goal was to promote dramatic activities as a medium of Jewish cultural programming by encourageing new theatre groups, offering guidance in Jewish drama programming, to promote and develop new talent and scripts, and to work towards a Jewish Drama Festival. In 1984, a series of developmental workshops resulted in the formation of the Medina Theatre Ensemble, which presented creative theatrical programmes of Jewish content. The committee also organized workshops, school programmes, symposiums, lectures and readings and a yearly playwriting competition. The Jewish Theatre Committee disbanded sometime in the early 2000s.

Accession consists of records documenting the governance, operation, and programs of the Hillel Children's Workshop. Included are meeting minutes, correspondence, policy documents, programming records, newsletters, mission statements, financial records, course outlines, class lists and teacher handbooks. Also included are photographs of special events, such as Chanukah, Purim, and Sukkot parties.
Administrative History
Established in 1974, the Hillel Children's Workshop was a cooperative Jewish Sunday school that ran programs for both parents and children. The curriculum was focused on Jewish humanist principles and based on Biblical and secular sources. As a cooperative group, parents were actively involved in the organization. In 2012, the school closed due to decreased enrolment.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of two volumes of the Canadian Jewish War Memorial Book of Remembrance. The first of these two volumes contains lists of Jewish soldiers who served in the Canadian military during the South African war, the First and Second World Wars and Korea. It also lists current day Jewish peacekeepers. There are photos and lists of Jewish chaplains who served in the military. For each war, it lists awards, casualties, soldiers' positions and identification numbers. The second volume contains lists of American soldiers who served in the Canadian military.
Custodial History
This book was presented by the Canadian Jewish War Memorial Association to the US Consulate who subsequently donated it to the Ontario Jewish Archives.

Accession consists of records related to the Jewish Free Loan Toronto (formerly the Toronto Jewish Free Loan Cassa or the G’milath Chasodim). Records include executive and board of directors meeting minutes, agendas, correspondance, reports and case summaries from the 1980s and 1990s.

Administrative History
The Jews who immigrated to Toronto in the early 1900s had difficulty finding employment, in particular the Shabbat observant members of the community. Consequently, these individuals had to seek out entrepreneurial possibilities which were financed by the early versions of communal loan societies.
The Loan Cassa originally served the community by offering loans to settle Jews in agricultural colonies on lands purchased by the Jewish Colonization Association of Canada. With funding from the estate of Baron de Hirsch, these loans were intended only for new immigrants who had been in Canada for less than 8 years. As Loan Cassa evolved over the years, it operated in partnership with the United Jewish Relief Agency and the Canadian Jewish Congress, and became the agency that provided business loans to the community.
A Free Loan Society was formed in Toronto in 1911, under the Associated Hebrew Charities. It operated on a very informal basis, with promissory notes being guaranteed by prominent individuals. By 1917 it was deeply in debt, with only two dollars in its treasury. In 1922, Rabbi Barnett Brickner recommended a new Free Loan Society, to be financed by B’nai Brith and private donors. With $3,800 from B’nai Brith and $1,350 from community members, the first meeting of the Hebrew Free Loan Association was held on Dec.7, 1922 at the Zionist Institute, at the corner of Beverly and Cecil Streets. On July 12, 1924, Letters Patent were signed and sealed, incorporating Toronto G’Milath Chasodim Association. Twelve Jewish men, “all of the City of Toronto, in the County of York and Province of Ontario” were the founding members of the corporation, which was established “to assist deserving applicants for relief.”
Historically, the B’nai Brith Organization and the National Council of Jewish Women provided the funds for student loans. Their original contributions were effective in establishing this community service, “by providing funds through loans to those students academically capable but financially unable to continue studies leading to vocational preparation.” In 1957, when additional community support was required, the Scholarship In Aid program began operating under the auspices of the United Jewish Welfare Fund. Toronto Hebrew Re-Establishment Services assumed responsibility for, and administered, the program.
Recognizing that the community would be best served by one free loan organization, TJFLC (Toronto Jewish Free Loan Cassa (G’milath Chasodim) Association) was formed in 1985 through a merger of Toronto’s business, personal and educational loan agencies. In 2011, the board of directors approved a new name, Jewish Free Loan Toronto (JFLT) in furtherance of a new marketing and outreach initiative.
JFLT supports the position that the Jewish community assumes a responsibility to assist and to invest in the future of its community members. JFLT is proud to carry on with the important work of G’milath Chasodim – Helping Others To Help Themselves.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of the records of the Ontario Jewish Archives, particularly those originating from former Director, Ellen Scheinberg. The records include programming material, correspondence, memos, reports, meeting minutes, financial records and publicity material relating to the general operations and planning, programming, exhibit curation, special projects, and acquisition of records at the OJA.
Administrative History
The Ontario Jewish Archives (OJA) was established in 1973 and remains in operation today. The OJA’s mandate is to acquire, preserve, and make available records documenting Ontario’s Jewish community. The Archives became a legal corporation on 24 February 1977 with authorization from the Federal Corporations Act and the Provincial Letters Patent.
The Toronto Jewish Historical Society (TJHS) established an Archives Committee in 1971, to preserve the records of Toronto’s Jewish community. This prompted the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) Central Region to work with the TJHS to establish an organization that would preserve records of Jewish communities across Ontario. At a CJC Central Region Officers’ meeting in 1973, TJHS president Victor Sefton proposed that the Historical Society’s Archives Committee become an official arm of the CJC. After approving the proposal, the CJC Central Region allocated a budget for operation of the Archives, and the two Committees merged, forming one archival organization that operated under the umbrella of the CJC Central Region.
After the Toronto Jewish Congress (TJC) formed in 1976, the Archives became accountable to the TJC but continued to report to the CJC Central Region. In 1992, the TJC and CJC transferred responsibility for the Archives to the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation, and the Archives remains part of that organization today.
The OJA’s administrative structure includes a Board of Directors, the director of the archives, archivists, an assistant archivist, contract employees, and volunteers. The Board of Directors consists of six to twelve members, each approved by UJA Federation and current Board members. Meetings are held a minimum four times per year and are presided by a Chair or the Vice Chair in the Chair’s absence. The Archives Director manages daily operation of the Archives. From 1973 to around 2000, Stephen Speisman acted as Director of the Archives. Ellen Scheinberg served as Archives Director from October 2002 to January 2011. Dara Solomon began as the OJA's Director in May 2012.
