- Scope and Content
- Item consists of a recording of the Panel Presentation of the Third Annual Seminar on Teaching the Holocaust, held from 1 pm to 2:30 am of 31 October 1983 at the Ross Building of York University. The theme of the panel presentation was "The Twisting of History." The session starts with an introductory remark by the moderator, Dr. Mark Webber (Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, York University). He is followed by Dr. Yaffa Eliach (Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies, Documentation and Research in Brooklyn, New York, and author of the book "Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust"), who discusses the distortion and denial of materials related to the Holocaust Socialist and Western countries as two different phenomena, highlighting that, although Holocaust memorialism in Socialist countries was inaccurate, the majority of works published distorting or denying the Holocaust were published in the Western world, particularly the United States. She is followed by Dr. William D. Irvine (Assistant Professor of History, Glendon College, and auhtor of "French Conservatism in Crisis"), who talks about the gaps in the teaching of History and the teaching of the history of the Holocaust. He is followed by Alan Shefman (National Director of the B'nai B'rith League of Human Rights), who talks about the rise of the Social Credit movement in Canada and the historical distortions it committed, as well as James Keegstra, an Eckville Junior/Senior High School history teacher and vice-principal, who was charged in 1984 under the Criminal Code of Canada for teaching his students antisemitic material, including Holocaust denial. He is followed by Dr. Harold Troper (Assistant Professor of History, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, co-author of "None Is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe 1933-1948"), who discusses the teaching of History as a way of purveying national myths through historical stories, the perpetuation of prejudice and racism through education, and the relativization of historical facts. A discussion among the panelists follows, followed by a Q&A session.
