Beth Hamidrash Hagadol, more commonly known as the McCaul Street Synagogue, was first established in 1887 and was originally located above a grocery store (owned by A. Broudy) at the corner of Richmond and York Streets. Due to financial instability, the location changed frequently during its early years, eventually to the top of a blacksmith shop. In 1899, a new home was purchased at the corner of Simcoe and Pearl Streets.
Jews from Russia, Galicia, Bucovina, Poland, Roumania, Latvia, Lithuania, White Russia and other countries, particpated in the establishment of the synagogue. The intenion with this synagogue was for it to be inclusive, regardless of country of origin.
History
In 1905, the enlarged congregation moved into a larger home, the former McCaul Street Methodist Church, which it quickly renovated and remodeled into a synagogue. The synagogue was renamed Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Chevra T'hilim. The shul thrived for the next 50 years on McCaul Street. In September of 1952, the synagogue and its sister synagogue Goel Tzedec amalgamated to form Beth Tzedec.
The first cantor was Yudel Breslin and in 1904, Mr. M. Shulman became the cantor. Rabbi Jacob Gordon was appointed in 1905.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of records related to the planning and production of a centenary journal and dinner in honour of the 100th anniversary of The Beth Jacob V’anshe Drildz Congregation. Included are submissions for the journal including a detailed history of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, print proofs of the journal, congratulatory letters from politicians and Jewish organizations and congratulatory ads. In addition there are copies of speeches from the dinner held on June 26, 1997, a sample of the invitation and general planning correspondence.
Photographs taken for the journal feature exterior shots of the Beth Jacob Synagogue on Henry St and Wilmington and interior shots of the Bimah, Aron ha-kodesh, stained glass windows, sanctuary from the Wilmington Street location along with clergy, members of the sisterhood and brotherhood, presidents and others involved in the synagogue.
Administrative History
Beth Jacob congregation was founded in 1897 and was located in three different locations in St. John’s Ward before the land at 23 Henry Street was purchased in 1919. Known as the Henry Street Shul or the Polishe Shul, the new purpose-built synagogue was dedicated in 1922. The dedication ceremonies attracted so many onlookers that the police had to be called in to manage the crowds.
The synagogue could accommodate up to 800 worshippers – 500 in the men’s section and 300 in the women’s balcony. According to Orthodox tradition, men and women sit separately during synagogue services. Its neo-Romanesque design was typical of other North American synagogues of the period that borrowed heavily from church architecture, often featured arched entranceways, rose windows and twin towers. Its vaulted ceiling was capped by a massive central dome and four smaller ones. It boasted a mikvah (ritual bath) in its basement as well as an assembly hall, a smaller chapel, a brick sukkah and a caretaker’s apartment. The synagogue’s intricately carved Aron ha-kodesh and Bimah were also designed by Brown and were removed in the mid 1960s when the congregation relocated to its current location in North York. The building was sold and converted into the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church.
Benjamin Brown considered Beth Jacob Synagogue to be his crowning achievement. It was the first synagogue in Toronto (perhaps Canada) to be designed by a Jewish architect and signified the Jewish community’s increased confidence in its new generation of emerging professionals.

History
It was founded by poor Jewish immigrants from Russia (mostly Minsk) in 1912. The current Byzantine Revival building was completed in 1930. The congregation has had only three full-time rabbis: Meyer Levy (1916–1921), Meyer Zimmerman (1940–1954), and Shmuel Spero, who has served from 1988 to the present. It is the only Orthodox synagogue in downtown Toronto with a full-time rabbi, and the only one that holds daily services.

Admin History/Bio
Adas Israel is an orthodox congregation that was founded in the 1920s. The original building was on Cannon Street in downtown Hamilton. After the arrival of Rabbi Morton Green in 1958, a decision was made to move the synagogue to the western suburbs of Hamilton. The new building was built in 1961 and also included the Hamilton Hebrew Academy Day School. Since its move, synagogue membership has increased from 75 families to 350 families. Sol Edell became a member in 1966 after he married Celia Hoffman who was a member of the congregation. He did not attend the synagogue and had no regular involvement but did supervise a number synagogue renovation projects.
Custodial History
The material in this series was originally collected by the Hoffman family who were members of the congregation in the 1960s. Sol Edell became a member of the congregation after his marriage to Celia Hoffman in 1966. After her death in 1973, he inherited the material that she had collected and he continued to receive material from the congregation since he maintained his membership until his death in 2000.
Scope and Content
Series consists of correspondence, blueprints, photographs, audiotapes and films relating to the establishment and construction of the new synagogue in 1961. It also includes correspondence and anniversary books documenting a variety of synagogue activities such as the dedication of the synagogue and a tribute dinner honouring Rabbi Mordechai Green. Also included are synagogue bulletins from 1958 to 2000. The series is made up of 6 sub series: Building, Clergy, Religious, Programmes, Administration and Finance, and Publications.
Notes
Physical description note: includes 27 photographs, 3 audio reels, 1 film reel, 15 architectural drawings, and 1 key.
