- Admin History/Bio
- Benevolent societies, or landsmenshaften, were formed in the early part of the twentieth-centurey along shtetl lines by Eastern European Jewish immigrants to Toronto. The societies served to unite members of the community who originated from the same town or region, and also helped to secure passage to Toronto for those who were still in Europe. The societies also provided services to its dues-paying membership such as: aid in finding employment or accomodation, hospital and special medical care, doctor's visitation, sick benefit payments, funeral benefits and arrangements, and in many cases a burial plot. Some societies also provided a loans to its membership through a credit society. In later years, many benevlent societies also began to act as fraternal organizations that engaged in cultural and philanthropic programming.
- The benevolent societies included in this sub-series were founded on the following dates: Chenstochover, 1914; Chmielnicker, ?; Drildzer, 1934; Hebrew Sick Benefit, 1910; Ivansker, 1931; Keltzer, 1913; Lagover, 1932; Lubliner, ?; Ostrovtzer Independent, 1925; Pride of Israel, 1905; Radomer, 1935; Stashiver, 1918; Warshaver Lodzer, 1929.

- Accession consists of videos documenting various commemorations and conferences of the Transnistria Society in Montreal; Quebec; and Washington, D.C. Tape 1 features the First North American Commemoration of Victims of Transnistria, 1994 and Montreal Transistria 1995. Inserted in the jacket of the VHS is a typewritten note from Felicia Carmelly to the individuals who ordered copies of the video, stating the expenses and final cost. Also included is a VHS of Felicia Carmelly's interview with Paul Draper dated August, 1994.
- Administrative History
- Founded in 1980, the Transnistria Survivors' Association works diligently to provide a voice for and raise awareness of a lesser known group of Holocaust survivors from Transnistria, an area by the eastern Moldovan border with today's Ukraine that was the third largest Jewish population in Europe. As early as 1933, the Jews of Bucovina and Basarabia were affected by the brutally repressive laws aimed at Jews enforced by both the Nazis and the Romanians, neighbours turning on neighbours. By 1942, over 100,000 Romanian Jews were deported or murdered and many were interned at concentration camps in the Transnistria area. Those who survived these tragic circumstances and made a new home in Toronto, found one another and banded together to lend each other support and to tell their largely unknown story of oppression and survival. They organize regular Hazkarah (memorial) services and untiringly present their stories at speaking engagements and synagogues.

- This was a very active committee consisting of representatives from the fraternal orders, sick benefit societies and landsmanshaften. An early chairman was Alfred Green. In 1947, it was Carl Herlick, K.C. The committee dealt - or tried to deal - among other issues, with the relationship of the societies and the medical profession. After the expulsion of the United Jewish Peoples Order in 1950, it seemed to peter out. The Societies Division held annual social events - one year at the Prince George Hotel.

- Accession consists of two booklets from the Ezra Noshem Society, used to record dues collected and including a brief history of the society up to 1922.
- Administrative History
- The Ezras Noshem Society (or Ezras Noshim Society) was a women's mutual benefit society established in Toronto in 1913 by R. Miller, a Mrs. Adler, and a Mrs. Zigerman. It began as an aid organization through which dues-paying members received visits and help with household chores during times of illness. The growing need for a place to care for elderly Jews prompted the society to open the Jewish Old Folks' Home in a house at 31 Cecil Street in 1917. Slova Greenberg initiated this effort and was still leading the Ezras Noshem Society when it played an instrumental role in raising funds for and founding Mount Sinai Hospital on Yorkville Avenue, around 1922.

- The Menorah Society grew out of the Yiddish Club at the University of Toronto in 1917. The had a semi-official status and superseded most of the other Jewish student groups. Most often they met off campus, but they did have a faculty advisor named Professor W. R. Taylor, who taught Hebrew at University College. The society was a branch of an intercollegiate Jewish society formed at Harvard in 1906 for the study of Jewish history and culture. In Toronto, they flourished until it was undermined by the Greek-letter fraternities in the late 1920s. It dissolved in 1931.

- Accession consists of a gold Kieltzer Sick Benefit Society pin engraved with "for not drawing ten years benefit".
- Administrative History
- The Kieltzer Society was organized in 1913 by a handful of immigrants from the city of Kieltz (Kielce) in Poland with the objective of creating a home away from home for themselves and the arriving new immigrants. They helped each other find jobs and accommodations, and they arranged opportunities to socialize with one another. As the Society became more established, it created a Free Loan Casa (fund). Members could borrow money for down payments on homes, starting businesses, and sending home parcels. Each member was also entitled to receive weekly sick benefits when necessary and free doctor visits.
- Following the devastation of the Holocaust, there were new obligations and responsibilities for the Society. Members welcomed recently arrived immigrants from Kieltz into the Society and helped them adjust to a new life. These new members reinvigorated the Society with active participation and the organization of more social events. Once the immigrants became more settled in Toronto, the Kieltzer Society turned its efforts to strengthening the new State of Israel by raising funds, buying Israel Bonds and teaching the next generation the importance of its security. The members of the Society were awarded with pins and badges in recognition of their leadership and tzedakah. As the Kieltzer Society celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013, it remains steadfast in its commitment to Israel and to preserving its legacy for future generations.

- Descriptive Notes
- The date of the photographs was estimated by Ben Kayfetz, whose relatives appear in the photos. However, the date seems to be incorrect. The photograph of the ladies auxiliary appears to be from the 1940s or early 1950s, judging from the clothes worn by the women. The Mozirer Young Women photograph appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s, and the Mozirer Young Men photo appears to be from the 1920s.

- 1665 photographs (approx.) ; b&w ; 10 x 15 cm
- Date
- [ca. 1997]-[ca. 1999]
- Scope and Content
- This accession consists of photographs of headstones at the Roselawn Cemetery in Toronto. The photographs were taken by volunteers working on the project which meant to capture genealogical information from the Jewish cemeteries around Toronto. Some of the information from the stones have been uploaded to the JewishGen's burial registry database, however, the photographs contain additional information such as Hebrew names and birth and death dates.
- Taken alongside the stone in each photograph is an accompanying marker indicating the section and row of the grave, which corresponds to a physical list filed with each binder. Researchers will have to search for the deceased person's name on JewishGen first and locate the section and row of the stone, before being able to find the photograph in the binders.
- Administrative History
- The Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) was formally established in 1985. It is now one of seven Jewish genealogical societies in Canada. Its mission is to stimulate interest in the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research; to facilitate the pursuit of Jewish genealogical research locally and globally; and to provide an environment for fellowship and mutual exchange among persons with an interest in Jewish genealogy.
