- Clara and Minnie Barry were popular American Jazz and Klezmer entertainers of the 1940s to the early 1970s. Born in the Bronx, New York in a Yiddish-speaking home to a Russian-born father and a mother from Vienna, when the sisters decided to entertain by singing in Yiddish, their father told them they would need to do it in the manner of the Old World and not with American accents. The young girls got their first break as singers on WLTH Radio's "Uncle Norman" show for children and were then known as The Bagelman Sisters. They made their first recordings with RCA Records in the late 1930s and began to make a name for themselves as Yiddish jazz singers.
- When the Andrews Sisters' version of the Yiddish song, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön", became a hit, musician and composer Sam Medoff started his "Yiddish Melodies in Swing" radio program on New York's WHN. Before joining the radio show, the sisters made a change of their stage surname from Bagelman to Barry. From 1937 until the mid-1950s they performed on the program, where they would sing jazz recordings in the Yiddish language. Their recordings included popular tunes, such as "Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head" translated into Yiddish (Trop'ns Fin Regen Oif Mein Kop). They also performed in the New York Catskills resort hotels. They eventually toured with Mickey Katz.During the height of their popularity, they even made appearances on the Ed Sullivan and Jack Paar shows and were one of the few American acts to tour the Soviet Union in 1959. The sisters also entertained Israeli troops during the Yom Kippur War.

- The National Camps Association was established by the Zionist Organization of Canada as an administrative body responsible for overseeing the operation of the ZOC-owned summer camps in Canada. The Executive Vice-President was in charge of supervising the Camps Association which, after 1970, included a National Camps Committee comprised of regional camp chairmen and alternate representatives appointed by the regional presidents. The National Committee members were also de-facto members of the Regional Camp Committees.
- The National Camps Association created all of the standards and guidelines for the camps, which were implemented by the Regional Camp Committees as a way of streamlining operations. The Association also handled all budgetary matters. Staffing and daily camp operation was conducted in co-operation with Canadian Young Judaea, a Zionist organization of Canadian youth and young adults.
- The National Camps Association was responsible for Camp Biluim, the leadership training institutue; the Biluim Summer Programme in Israel; Camp Solelim and Camp Shalom in Ontario; Camp Hagshama and Camp Kinneret in Quebec; Camp Hatikvah in British Columbia; and Camp Kadima in Nova Scotia.

- Founded in the 1920s, Camp Yungvelt was originally situated on Lake Wilcox. Two years later it moved to Pickering, where it operated until it closed in the 1950s. It was established by the Workmen's Circle, as a Yiddish summer camp for Jewish children. Camp Yungvelt was known for accepting the children of poor immigrants for a small fraction of the regular fee.

- The photographs previously belonged to the donor's mother, Marcia Rose (née Dillick).
- Administrative History
- Irene Granovsky founded the Balfour Manor Camp in 1935 and subsequently served as its director. The camp took its name from British foreign secretary Arthur James Balfour, the author of the Balfour Declaration. The camp was situated on Morrison Lake and served as a private camp for Jewish youth, providing such activities as canoeing, swimming, and tennis. At its peak, the camp was home to two hundred or so campers. It closed in 1952.

- Camp Winnebagoe is still operating today as a private co-ed Jewish summer camp for children eight to sixteen years of age. It was founded by Joseph B. and Sadie Danson and was located on 500 acres of land near Huntsville in Ontario's Muskoka region. The camp catered to the Jewish community and provided a variety of different athletic and social programmes, such as arts and crafts, canoeing, baseball, swimming, music and nature studies. Ida Siegel's son David, was a counsellor at the camp.

- In August 1959, the Ed Sullivan show travelled to the USSR and taped a show in Moscow titled, "Invitation to Moscow". It aired September 27, 1959. Sylvia Schwartz photographed the show as she was in Moscow at the time.
- Acts that were featured at the show included the Barry Sisters (vocal group), Margaret Tynes (opera singer) and Hubert Castle (tight-wire aerialist).
- Clara and Minnie Barry were popular American Jazz and Klezmer entertainers of the 1940s to the early 1970s. Born in the Bronx, New York in a Yiddish-speaking home to a Russian-born father and a mother from Vienna, when the sisters decided to entertain by singing in Yiddish, their father told them they would need to do it in the manner of the Old World and not with American accents. The young girls got their first break as singers on WLTH Radio's "Uncle Norman" show for children and were then known as The Bagelman Sisters. They made their first recordings with RCA Records in the late 1930s and began to make a name for themselves as Yiddish jazz singers.
- When the Andrews Sisters' version of the Yiddish song, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön", became a hit, musician and composer Sam Medoff started his "Yiddish Melodies in Swing" radio program on New York's WHN. Before joining the radio show, the sisters made a change of their stage surname from Bagelman to Barry. From 1937 until the mid-1950s they performed on the program, where they would sing jazz recordings in the Yiddish language. Their recordings included popular tunes, such as "Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head" translated into Yiddish (Trop'ns Fin Regen Oif Mein Kop). They also performed in the New York Catskills resort hotels. They eventually toured with Mickey Katz.During the height of their popularity, they even made appearances on the Ed Sullivan and Jack Paar shows and were one of the few American acts to tour the Soviet Union in 1959. The sisters also entertained Israeli troops during the Yom Kippur War.
- Hubert Castle, born Hal Silvers, was a tightrope walker for Ringling Brothers for 20 years and owned his own circus. Born and raised in Oklahoma until the age of 14, he married Mary "Bunny" Tanner, and had two children, Hal Junior and Jan.
- Margaret Tynes is an African-American opera, concert and oratorio soprano and singing actress. She earned a Bachelors Degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Tynes continued her studies at Julliard School in New York City and later earned a Masters in Music Education from Columbia University. She has performed in the United States, Canada and throughout Europe. She has appeared with leading opera companies of the United States and Europe, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna Staatsoper. Her roles range from Lady Macbeth (Macbeth), Carmen (Carmen), Aida (Aida) and Dido (Dido and Aeneas). She gained international acclaim for her role as Salome at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. She became the first American to perform behind the Iron Curtain when she went to Russia with Ed Sullivan for the U.S. State Department.

- In 1946, David Lieberman founded Camp Ogama, a private a co-educational overnight camp for children aged 6-16, on Fox Lake near Huntsville. It was touted to be “Canada’s most progressive camp for young Jewish boys and girls.” The socially conscience programming offered at Camp Ogama had a profound impact on counselors and campers alike producing highly influential alumni. Former camper journalist Earl Pomerantz reflects, “Camp inoculated us with a passion for justice. And it wasn’t write a check and see you later; this was money where your mouth is.”

- Accession consists of 17 scanned photographs from Joe Solomon's time as a camper and tripper at Camp Timberlane, an overnight camp founded in 1957 by Barry and Philomena Lowes on Lake of Two Islands in the Haliburton Highlands. Since it's founding, Camp Timberlane has catered to Jewish campers from Toronto. There is a finding aid in the folder with the scanned photos.
- Administrative History
- Joseph Nathan Solomon was born on September 4, 1944 to Myer and Sarah (nee Grafstein) Solomon. He is their middle son. He has two brothers David (deceased 2013) and Robert. Solomon attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, University of Toronto for his Bachelors and Osgoode Law School. A highlight of Solomon's life is being a tripper at Camp Timberlane for over 15 years. Solomon practiced law with his father Myer Solomon for the firm Solomon & Solomon and independendly following Myer's retirement and death in the late 1980s. Solomon married Maureen (nee Kokotow) Solomon from Kirkland Lake, ON in 1968. They have two daughters Alida Solomon and Dara Solomon, who started serving as the director of the Ontario Jewish Archives in 2012. Alida Solomon is a chef and restaurant owner.

- Canadian Young Judaea was founded in 1909 as a Zionist movement for Canadian youth by members of the Herzl Zion Club. As a Zionist organization, Young Judaea continues to be committed to fostering a sense of Jewish identity and values in today's Jewish youth and to encouraging a lifelong commitment to Israel. In order to foster a closer connection to Israel, Canadian Young Judaea employs educational Shlichim from Israel who are posted to various Jewish communities throughout Canada and to offices at the national level in Toronto Young Judaea also operates several Zionist summer camps located in each region of Canada, and a summer leadership institute called Camp Biluim in Quebec. In addition to the social programme of the organization, Young Judaea also offers educational seminars and conferences. Young Judaea's national structure includes a National Executive Board and an Administrative Council. Conventions are held regularly, as are regional conferences. In the past, Young Judaea operated as an associated, but distinct, organization from the Zionist Organization Canada. However, Young Judaea operations were overseen by the ZOC executive, and Young Judaea received their budget from the ZOC Treasury. In addition, ZOC and Young Judaea worked in conjunction with one another on many projects and programmes, such as with the operation of the Zionist camps.
- Camp Solelim was founded in 1965. Its name comes from Kibbutz HaSolelim in Israel which recognizes the builders who were integral to the establishment of the State of Israel. The program is infused with informal social, Jewish and Zionist educational programs. Like many of the camps founded earlier, campers are encouraged to participate in the functioning of the camp and derive a strong sense of responsibility through daily camp operations and camp projects.
- Camp Biluim was founded in 1961 under the auspices of the Zionist Organization of Canada as a national leadership training institute for Canadian youth. Originally located in Huntsville Ontario, the camp moved to Mont Tremblant, Quebec in 1976, where it remains today under the full operation of Canadian Young Judaea. The purpose of the camp was to provide practical and transferable leadership training to a slightly older group of Jewish Canadian youths, most of whom were members of Young Judaea. Many Camp Biluim graduates later returned to ZOC summer camps as counsellors or found senior administrative positions in Canadian Young Judaea. Camp Biluim was co-administered by the National Camps Association, and during its period in Ontario, the Ontario Camps Association. However, daily operation and staffing of the summer camp was provided by Canadian Young Judaea.
