Scope and Content

Accession consists of seven electronic copies of original photographs depicting various members of the Miller family of Cornwall, Ontario. Included is a photograph of Nathan Miller with his eyeglass testing machine, golden and diamond anniversary gatherings for Nathan and Dubby, a studio portrait of Abe Miller, a photo of Ben Miller in an army tent with fellow soldiers and two photos of Nathan Miller holding his grandson, Jack.

Custodial History

The original photographs are in the possession of the donor, Jack Miller. The scans were produced by the donor for the Archives' Small Jewish Communities project.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of 4 scanned photographs. One is a family snapshot of Tilla Kastner and the other three relate to Kastner's Clothing Store in Cornwall.

Administrative History

Sheila Kastner was born in Cornwall, Ontario in 1928, the same year her family moved there. Her father, Jacob Wolf Kastner, was born in the 1870s in Bukavina which was then part of Austria. He came to Canada in 1901. Sheila's mother was Tilla Brucer, born in 1895 in Rumania. She met and married Jacob in Montreal in 1923. Kastner's Clothing Store was originally located in what had been a house, on Pitt Street. The family lived behind the premises. Sheila's mother then rented a better location at 100 Pitt Street, as well as a house at 11 Augustus Street for the family. In 1939 the Kastners moved to Montreal. They moved four times there and had three stores. In 1942 her mother Tilla left her husband to return to Cornwall, accompanied by 14-year-old Sheila. After high school, Sheila went to Carleton College to study journalism. She married and had a child, which interrupted her degree. She and her husband moved to Cornwall and ran the successful men's and boy's clothing store Tilla had created, T. Kastner Limited, until they sold it in 1968. The new owners retained the respected name of Kastner and the store is still in business nearly seventy years later at 27 First Street East.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of material primarily documenting kosher meat scandals and strikes in Toronto in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the Kehilla (Toronto Rabbinical Board). There are complete pages of some documents and portions of others. The documents are flyers (public notices) in Yiddish (with some Hebrew in religious context and quotations) to do with a scandal or several scandals in which it became clear a number of butchers were operating outside Rabbinical Board supervision and therefore selling (assumed to be) treif meat to Toronto Jews. Secondary scandal with Rabbi Yehuda Leib Graubart, who allegedly split off from the Rabbinical Board with six butchers to do business outside the union, with wholesalers, and gaining more money than union butchers and the rabbis working with them. Another thread relates to a strike for cheaper meat, including meetings of women picketers, and then for better conditions for local butchers. The flyers mostly fall between 1920-1940. All are from Toronto. Lists of local butchers’ shops with addresses and names are included.

Additional flyers cover Communist protests and protest meetings against German fascism and pogroms, specifically Hitler's government's prosecution of the Communist Party of Germany related to the Reichstag fire. Also included are a 1953 flyer for the tenth anniversary commemoration of the Latvian-Lithuanian Jews’ annihilation, and an open letter to Rabbi Abraham Aaron Price regarding his title.

Custodial History

There is no information on the acquisition of this material. However, retrieved from the original package in which the material was lodged was a note "Kashruth fliers from E. Miller" or Mitler.

Included is Jennie Davis' birth certificate (1885), the invitation to the marriage of Jennie Davis and Simon Sidman (1910), Jennie and Simon's ketubah from the New Synagogue and Beth-Hamidrash, Cheetham Hill Rd (1910), Simon Sidman's burial card (1928), Pearl's birth certificate (1914), Solly's birth certificate (1908), Pearl and Solly's ketubah from the United Synagogue in Manchester (1934), marriage certificate of Jennie Sidman and Myer Cohen (1956), British passports for both Jennie Cohen and Pearl and Solly Zucker, Canadian citizenship certificates for Solly and Pearl, and photos of Simon Sidman, Solly and Pearl, Solly, Gerald and Simon, Pearl's wedding portrait, and two portraits of Esther and Isaac Sugar. Also included are writings by Pearl, mostly written after the passing of Solly in 2001, and typed by her daughter-in-law, Jan Zucker.

Administrative History

Pearl Miller Zucker (née Sidman) was born on 18 Jan. 1914 in Manchester, England to Jennie Sidman Cohen (née Davis) (b. 5 May 1885, Russia-d. 31 Dec. 1983, Toronto) and Simon Sidman. Miller was the middle name given to Pearl at birth by her father. Pearl's mother Jennie had married Simon Sidman on 21 Aug. 1910. Simon died on 10 Dec. 1928 at age 45. Jennie then married Myer Cohen on Feb. 15, 1956 in Manchester, who died sometime between 1956 and 1959. Jennie became a landed immigrant in Canada in 1959.

Moses Solomon "Solly" Zucker (Sugar) (b. 6 Feb. 1908, County of Gateshead, England-d. 22 Jan. 2001, Toronto) was born to Isaac and Esther Sugar (née Greenbaum). He married Pearl "Pesh" Sidman on 20 June 1934. Miller was Pearl's given middle name. The couple had two sons: Gerald Zucker (b. 5 July 1936) and Simon Zucker (b. 15 Nov. 1937). Solly served with the fire brigade in Manchester during the Second World War.

The couple immigrated to Canada from England in June 1952 for economic reasons. Pearl had a cousin named Mark Gilbert already living in Canada. The couple and their two sons first landed in Montreal, but only stayed a year before moving to Toronto. Upon arrival in Canada, Solly got a job with the Canadian Government, possibly with the RCAF at Downsview. Pearl worked for Bell Canada. The family belonged to Shaarei Tefillah Synagogue and lived in the Bathurst and Eglinton area.

Pearl died on 20 February 2018 at the age of 104.

This accession consists of records documenting the Jewish community of Cornwall. The records include newsclippings; B'nai Birth meeting minutes, dues ledger book, and membership pins; Hadassah meeting minutes; photographs; Beth-El Synagogue correspondence, memorial book, president speeches, congregational meeting minutes, annual general meeting minutes, and financial statements; and a cemetery plan and ledger book.

Custodial History

The records were in the custody of Mark Goldhamer, former president of the Beth El Synagogue and were originally lent to the Archives for research purposes for the Small Jewish Communities project. Upon discussion with the director of the Archives, Mark decided to donate the records to the OJA and thus they were transferred via Sharon Gubbay Helfer, oral historian and researcher/writer on the small Jewish Communities project.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of a scrapbook created by Eleanor Cadesky Miller when she was a student at U of T and during the early years of her nursing career and marriage to Harold Miller. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and mementoes including cards, tickets, letters, invitations, poems and programmes from social events, plays and concerts. The entities documented include the UJWF Women's Campaign, Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, the Deborah chapter of Hadassah, the Temple Players of Holy Blossom Temple, and Forest Hill veterans. Also featured are obituaries for Eleanor Miller's contemporary, Harry Sniderman, and a 1939 newsletter from Camp Winnebagoe.

Administrative History

Eleanor Cadesky (1923- ) is the daughter of R. L. Cadesky. She attended the University of Toronto from 1939 to 1943, graduating with a diploma in physiotherapy. The following year she married Harold Miller, also a graduate of U of T. Together they raised three children in Toronto, Ronald, Gary and Lynn.

Sylvia Schwartz's parents were Joseph and Gertrude Schwartz. She had three sisters; Fanny, Helen and Ruth. Fanny married Alex Solway and had two children, Carol and Herbert. Helen married Dr. Isaac Shleser, a doctor of internal medicine, and had two daughters, Jill and Jan. Sylvia was a part of a large extended family that remained close throughout her life as they shared many similar interests and a family cottage in Bobcaygeon.

Many members of her family were and are prominent individuals of the Jewish community in Toronto. Faye Halbert was Sylvia's cousin on her mother's side whose children, Ralph and Gerald, went on to become prominent doctors and members of the Jewish community. Jack Schwartz, Sylvia's uncle, was also in the fur business and was married to Minnie Schwartz. Their daughter was Jewell, who owned an art gallery in Yorkville for many years.

Other related families include the Haussers and the Wintrobs.

This series consists of negatives and proofs created by Sylvia Schwartz of members of her family. Images are primarily of the Schwartz, Solway, Shlesser and Halbert families. Types of photographs include formal portraits in the studio and home and informal and candid portraits of the family at leisure and at events.

This series has been divided into three sub-series. Sub-series 1 contains formal portraits, Sub-series 2 contains images of the family at recreation and Sub-series 3 contains images of the family at events.

Sub-series 1 consists of negatives and proofs of formal portraits done by Sylvia of her immediate family. They were taken both in her studio and in her family home. Those done in the home date from an earlier time. Generally, they are images of the head and upper body of the sitter. Some images feature full body shots of the sitter and some interior views of the Schwartz family home. Those photographed include Gerald, Ralph and Rhoda Halbert, Gertrude, Joseph, Ruth, Jack and Jewell Schwartz, Isaac, Jill and Jan Shleser, and Fanny, Alex, Herbert, Carol and Gary Solway. There are multiple portraits of Ruth Schwartz, the majority of them showcasing Sylvia's early experimentation with portraiture. There are also six self-portraits of Sylvia.

Sub-series 2 consists of thirty-nine negatives and five prints taken by Sylvia Schwartz of the family at recreation. The majority of the images are of the family relaxing at their cottage in Bobcaygeon. There is one print of Herbert Solway reading the newspaper with his son Gary that may or may not have been taken at the cottage. Images consist of photographs of the family on the lawn, in the cottage and at the lake. There are both candid and staged photographs. Family members featured include Gertrude, Joseph, Ruth, Jack and Jewell Schwartz, Helen, Isaac, Jill and Jan Shleser, Fanny, Alex, Herbert, Carol and Gary Solway. Also pictured are members of the Hausser, Halbert and Wintrob families. Friends of the family also appear in these images, such as, Judith Wolfson, Frances and David Gruber and David Rotenberg and his brothers. Sylvia Schwartz is in some images. There is one print that is a view of the cottage from the lake.

Sub-series 3 consists of thirty-one negatives taken by Sylvia Schwartz of family related events that she attended. These include a Pidyon Ha'Ben ceremony for Gary Solway, the first born son of Herbert, Sylvia's nephew and an opening at the Park Plaza Hotel. Images of the Pidyon Ha'Ben include Gertrude, Joseph, Ruth, Jack, Minnie and Jewell Schwartz, Helen, Jill and Jan Shleser, and Fanny, Alex, Herbert, Elaine and Carol Solway. Also included is David Rotenberg who acted as the Kohen at the ceremony. Images from the Park Plaza Hotel include views of the ballroom, the entertainers and family members. The Wintrob, Halbert and Yolles families are also present. Sylvia Schwartz is in two images.

Scope and Content

File consists of corrspondence between family members concerning reminiscences and genealogy, a family tree of Saul Cowan's parents Harris and Annie Cohen, two descendant family trees of Mayer Gollom (father of Annie Gollom Cohen), and a memoir titled "Altshuller Family Tree". Included in this document are photocopies of photographs, maps, a report on a 2005 reunion in Pontypool, Ontario, and a memoir of Belle Ewart by Al Sherman, which mentions the activities of the Rosenthal, Altshuller, Goldman, and Aiken families, as well as a 24-page descendant family tree of Max Altshuller.

Accession consists of material documenting the Posluns family. Of note is a letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Posluns from Abby Fuhrman, whose son, David Fuhrman, went to live with the Posluns during the Second World War.
