Scope and Content: Accession consists of records relating to the life and weightlifting career of Bill Gryfe. The textual records are photocopies of correspondence, clippings, and certificates from a family album. The photographs are scanned copies from this same album and include images of Bill with various individuals and images of weightlifting teams and individuals that he had coached. There are two trophies: one is a Grand Order of Israel bowling award and one is an award presented to Bill in 1979 by the JCC for over fifty years of service. There is also a CD with Bill Gryfe's memoirs and some additional photographs of Bill at a young age and of him at various weightlifting events and on vacation.

Administrative History: Bill Gryfe was an early member of the YMHA. He began as a weightlifter and in 1931 became a barbell coach of the YMHA weightlifting team.; He coached at many national and international competitions such as the Canada games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, and the Maccabean Games. He also officiated and refereed at national and international competitions including the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.; Throughout his life, Bill was devoted to the promotion of physical fitness and competitive weightlifting. He was a founder of the Ontario Weightlifting Association and its first president in 1968. He also organized the national-championship weightlifting competitions, held annually at the Canadian National Exhibition, an institution that had a distinct effect on his life from his earliest years when it was first established by Bill Oliphant in 1935. Over the years, Bill Gryfe received numerous awards and citations, including a nomination for the Order of Canada in 1982. Bill died in 2005 at the age of ninety-five.

Scope and Content: Accession consists of records related to the Hatikvah chapter of Toronto Hadassah. Included are speeches and a president's report as well as two photographs of the chapter's 35th anniversary. There are also two photographs of a presentation to Jack Maldaver form the B'nai Brith Lodge, Brantford. Individuals identified in the two photos include: Harry Solmon, Max Sherman, Dave Noble, Gordon Henkle, Harry Tulchinsky, Joe Poss, Itzik Sherman, Sam Sherman, Max Gazer, Lou Kwitko, Mr. Lipsy, Noach Zaltz, Harry Freedman and Louis Henkle.

Custodial History: The Hadassah records belonged to Kathryn Solmon, Arlene Gryfe's maternal aunt. She was at one point involved with Hadassah, but according to her son Kenneth Solmon, not the Hatikvah chapter and thus the reason for her possession of these records is unclear.; The two photographs of Jack Maldaver were in the possession of Dr. Cyril Gryfe. Indentification of individuals were supplied by Mr. Harvey Ross, a friend of Cyril's whose father is pictured in the photo.

He opened the bakery on the main floor of his home while his family of seven lived upstairs. The bakery had a wood-burning brick oven until the 1960s, when the city forced them to convert to electric.

History: The bakery was best known for their onion buns and rye bread. Electric mixers were used for cakes and bread but almost every other step was done by hand. Bread baking was started by 10:00 pm so that there would be fresh bread to deliver in the morning. The bakery closed in 1974.
