Accession consists of records created and collected by Cyrel Troster, which document Cyrel and her parents Jack Troster and Lillian Troster's involvement in the Jewish community. Records include three vinyl records documenting the music of William Lion Mackenzie High School orchestra and Camp Manitou-Wabing (1961-1965); six oversized posters (1960-2008); programmes, flyers, brochures, cards, and other small, printed items relating to Jewish cultural events that Cyrel attended ([197-]-2019); booklets and magazines (1977-2016); newspaper clippings documenting cultural events and activities of the Ontario Jewish community (1973-2021); and two photographs depicting a B’nai B’rith event and the 2nd women’s conference panel in Toronto. Also included are other assorted documents such as Cyrel Troster’s essay on the Workmen’s Circle (1974); certificates; listing of Board of Jewish Education (BJE) members (2000-2001 and 2004); a proposal for Yiddish Education and Cultural Centre [1998?]; an application for a film grant (1992); correspondence (1978 and 2012); and documents pertaining to Jewish Arts Directory (1992-1994), Second Encounter (bibliography for annual programs, registration cards, meeting minutes; 1977-1979), Cultural Services Planning and Allocations Committee (CSPAC) (member list, proposal, meeting minutes, strategic plan; 1994-2004), and Tzedakah Box Project (2005). Topics and events documented other than those mentioned above are Bathurst Manor, downtown synagogues, Kensington Market, the Sense of Spadina tour, Holy Blossom Synagogue, the Journey into Our Heritage exhibit, and the first Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

Administrative History

Cyrel Troster was an active member on the Cultural Services Planning and Allocation Committee and the Archives Committee and a former board member of the Ontario Jewish Archives Foundation. She is a recently retired schoolteacher and an active member of the Jewish community.

Accession consists of one negative depicting the Ontario Jewish Archives committee members in the former Beverley Street building, holding a wooden sign that reads: GENTILES ONLY.

Custodial History

Photograph was taken by a member of the Ontario Jewish Archives committee in 1983. The negative has been in the possession of Cyrel Troster since that time.

Administrative History

The sign was discovered by the committee at 152 Beverley Street in the basement hidden under the floorboards. A member of the committee used a crowbar to pull up the floor where it was discovered hidden in a hole. The physical sign was donated to the Ontario Jewish Archives.

Accession consists of material documenting Cyrel Troster's involvement with various Jewish committees and organizations. Included are: transcripts of oral histories with prominent Jewish Torontonians that were conducted as part of an oral history project in 1973; correspondence between Cyrel Troster and interviewees; index cards listing the dates of the oral history interviews; promotional materials for Jewish arts festivals; public proposal document for the new Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue; and documents and records from Cyrel's involvement in various Jewish organizations. Also included are Local Initiatives Program application forms (1973), lists of presidents of various Jewish organizations, a map of the Jewish York Region (1999), issues of Exodus Magazine in both English and Russian from May 2018, and two issues of the Wilson Heights High School yearbook The Torch (1962-63).

Included are membership dues for B'nai Brith Women Eglinton Chapter No. 771, a booklet produced in honour of Jerry Janowski on the occasion of his bar mitzvah on 21 January 1961, one bat mitzvah book that belonged to Rhonda Lee Ronson dated 1 November 1975, one bar mitzvah book that belonged to Jerry Allan Ronson dated 8 January 1966, a copy of the Congregation Rodfei Shulem Anshe Kiew (Kiever) constitution dated 1913, and a William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute pamphlet documenting the sixth annual graduation exercises dated 1 November 1967. Lastly, there is one match box with Joel Troster's name on it. The box has the date 7 September 1963 written on the side, which was the date of Joel's bar mitzvah.

Accession consists of copy photographs documenting Lt. Jack Troster's Second World War military service as a machine gunner with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. Included is an image of a group of servicemen in Nymegen, Holland, in January 1945, an image of Jack in his uniform (July 1943), and an image of Jack and another servicemen holding up a picture of Hitler possibly in Germany (1945?).

Identified in the photographs are: Jack Troster, Capt. Butler, Lt. W. Sharp, Major MacPherson, Lt. R. Ashman, Lt. Col. R. Ross, Capt. J. Woodward, and Pipe Major Scott.

Also included are home movies of a Jewish Cub Scout parade featuring Joel Troster and visiting day at Camp Tamarack and Camp Shalom. Joseph Tanenbaum was born on September 25, 1906 in Poland to parents Chippa Sarah and Abraham. The family moved to Canada. Joe became a bridge builder and industrialist, eventually taking over the family business--Runnymede Steel Construction. Two of the company's major accomplishments were the Burlington Skywayand the Hamer Bridge in St. Catharines.

He was a founder of the YW-YMHA, director of Israeli Bonds, an active member of UJA, B'nai B'rith, New Mount Sinai, Jewish Home for the Aged and Baycrest Hospital, Canadian Friends of Yeshiva University, Ner Israel Rabbinical College and Talmud Torah.

Canadian Young Judaea was founded in 1909 as a Zionist movement for Canadian youth by members of the Herzl Zion Club. As a Zionist organization, Young Judaea continues to be committed to fostering a sense of Jewish identity and values in today's Jewish youth and to encouraging a lifelong commitment to Israel.

In order to foster a closer connection to Israel, Canadian Young Judaea employs educational Shlichim from Israel who are posted to various Jewish communities throughout Canada and to offices at the national level in Toronto Young Judaea also operates several Zionist summer camps located in each region of Canada, and a summer leadership institute called Camp Biluim in Quebec. In addition to the social programme of the organization, Young Judaea also offers educational seminars and conferences.

Young Judaea's national structure includes a National Executive Board and an Administrative Council. Conventions are held regularly, as are regional conferences. In the past, Young Judaea operated as an associated, but distinct, organization from the Zionist Organization Canada. However, Young Judaea operations were overseen by the ZOC executive, and Young Judaea received their budget from the ZOC Treasury. In addition, ZOC and Young Judaea worked in conjuction with one another on many projects and programmes, such as with the operation of the Zionist camps.

Scope and Content

The series consists of files relating to the administrative operations of Canadian Young Judaea at the national level between 1957 and 1979. These records include: National Young Judaea meeting minutes, Young Judaea Adult Committee meeting minutes, executive meeting minutes and reports, Maskirut meeting minutes and reports, national kinus records, education programmes, national publications and newsletters, national studies, financial records, constitutions, staffing and administration records, and camp records.

Michael Cowan is the son of Saul and Lillian Cowan.

Scope and Content

File consists of photographs of Michael Cowan as a small child, in a group photo of the Homewood Public School choir, as a teenager in front of the family home on Brucewood in Toronto, and with his wife Nancy in Montreal. There is a commencement programme for his 1957 graduation from Bathurst Heights Collegiate, and programmes for recitals, concerts, and theatre events in which Michael was a participant or composed the music. These include the UC Follies at Hart House, University of Toronto, The Royal Conservatory of Music, Temple Sinai Religious School operetta, and The Jazz Singer at the Saidie Bronfman Yiddish Theatre in Montreal. As well there is correspondence between Michael and family members, and a letter written by him at the age of 11 to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society offering a suggestion for the cause of rheumatism.
