- Biography
- Joe and Minna Loewith immigrated to Canada in November 1938 from the Sudetenland. After arriving in Canada, they settled on the Wren Farm outside of Hamilton, Ontario, along with their family and other members of the immigration group. They got married in 1942. Afterwards, they bought a farm from their brother-in-law and then lived with their three sons on the farm.

Also included is one electronic textual document depicting The Cutting Veg's mission statement, issued as promotional material.
- Administrative History
- The Cutting Veg (TCV) is an eco-social enterprise rooted in organic farming. TCV runs four programs aimed at cultivating personal, social, environmental, and economic health. They cultivate multiple acres of mixed vegetables, making organic food more accessible to vegetable lovers of Southern Ontario. In addition to produce sales, TCV runs the “Global Garlic Project.” Specifically, they grow approximately 20 varieties of garlic from around the world, including Polish, Persian, Italian, Russian, Korean, and Israeli. TCV also provides Food Coaching Services, which offers garden & composting project support, agri-business training, food-based workshops, and part-time farming internships. Finally, TCV offers one-on-one “Wellness Counselling” for individuals who want to take steps forward with their health and happiness. Collectively, these programs are helping TCV towards the achievement of its quadruple bottom line: Personal health, Social health, Environmental health, and Economic health. TCV is owned and managed by Daniel Hoffmann. Daniel is an Organic Farmer, Social Worker (BSW), Counsellor, and has been farming in B.C. and Ontario since 2000.

- Administrative History
- Shoresh is a grassroots Jewish environmental organization in Southern Ontario. They exist to nurture a regional Jewish community that sees environmental ethics as a core element of Jewish identity, and is actively committed to responsible stewardship of the earth. They do this through educational programs that link Jewish texts and teachings with experiences of awe and wonder of the natural world; leadership opportunities that invest in the next generation of Jewish environmental leaders; and responsive action including environmental advocacy and the production of sustainable products that enrich Jewish life. They operate out of Shoresh’s Kavanah Garden in Vaughan, Bela Farm in Hillsburgh, and through schools, synagogues, camps, and community organizations throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

- Accession consists of records documenting the Latchman Triplets. Included are family photographs of Donald, Marvin and Victor Latchman, a family portrait taken at the wedding of Philip and Sally Latchman, class photos, summer camp photos, and images of the triplets' 75th and 80th birthdays (5 November 2013).
- Identified in photographs are: Donald and Annette Latchman, Victor and Rosalie Latchman, Marvin and Shirley Latchman, Philip and Sally Latchman, Morris Latchman, Vera Latchman Berrin, Mari Latchman Lipton, Irv Lipton, and Belle Latchman.
- Textual records include Beth Sholom Bulletin June-August 1997, Beth Sholom Brotherhood Ball and Installation 1971, photocopies of news paper articles about the triplets, class photos and letter regarding payment of King's Bounty.
- Administrative History
- Philip and Sally (Sugarman) Latchman were married in 1932. In November 1933, Sally gave birth to identical triplets Donald, Marvin and Victor. In celebration, they were sent the King's Bounty of 3 British pounds. The boys were interviewed every year on their birthday by Toronto newspapers until they decided to stop the publicity. The family lived in the Bloor-Markham area until the boys were 11. The family then moved to Montclair Avenue where the boys attended Forest Hill Public School. They had their bar-mitzvahs at the Hebrew Men of England Synagogue. The triplets' father, Philip Latchman was a founding members of Beth Sholom Synagogue. Donald Latchman was on the board and Rosalie Latchman was active in the congregation.
- Philip and his younger brother Morris Latchman started Federal Farms Limited in 1948 on 150 acres of Holland March in Brantford, Ontario. They grew vegetables: potatoes, carrots, celery and rutabegas. They also had a potato chip company Mad Hatter Snack Foods which was Kosher for Passover. Federal Farms Ltd. went public in 1961 and Loblaws bought 51% of the shares.
- Donald attended Ryerson business school and founded Latchman Insurance Brokers. He married Annette Bachst, a Holocaust survivor who grew up in New York.
- Marvin attended Ryerson business school then worked for Federal Farms at the Ontario Food Terminal. Later he became a real estate broker. He married Shirley Wolkofsky.
- Victor worked on the family farm and at Federal Fruit Company at the Ontario Food Terminal. Victor took a business course at Shaw's Business School. In 1966 he bought Taylors shoes, a business at 2934 Dundas Street. West started in 1920 by Sid Taylor. Victor helped start the Junction Business Improvement Association and was twice pesident of Junction Gardens BIA. He retired in 2009. Victor and Rosalie Greenspan (d. 2014) were married at Beth Sholom in 1958 by Rabbi David Monson. Their children are Howard, and Faith and Mitchell Sherman. Their grand-children are Matthew, Jennifer and Russell Sherman. Victor and Rosalie were honoured at Beth Sholom Synagogue on 26 October 2013 for their 55th wedding anniversary.
- In 2012 at age 78, the triplets believed themselves to be the oldest male identical triplets alive in Canada.

- Biography
- Morris Silbert was born in 1912 on a farm outside of Hamilton. His parents came from Lithuania. His father arrived in Canada in 1905, and his mother and three older siblings joined him in 1906. Morris spent his youth growing up on farms. At the age of sixteen in 1928, he and his family moved to Hamilton. In his youth, Morris was involved in several Jewish organizations, including Young Judaea, AZA, and Hashomer Hatzair. He was married in 1938. He served in the army in 1943 during the Second World War. Morris was the second vice president of the Council of Jewish Organizations. He also served on the executive board as chair of the nursery school board and participated in several committees.

Founder Ran Goel lists “his grandmother’s stories about growing up on a Kibbutz, feeling democracy awaken in his childhood home of South Africa and his mom’s stuffed peppers” as inspiration.

- Accession consists of electronic copies of documents, photographs, and portraits that pertain to Belleville's Sons of Jacob Congregation, to the activities of the Belleville chapter of Hadassah-WIZO, and the Tobe family of Belleville. The records date from 1917 to circa 1981 and include: the congregation's constitution (1972) and a certificate from The United Synagogue of America recognizing it as a member synagogue of the Conservative movement (1961); Hadassah-WIZO documents including certificates relating to donations, photographs, and an advertising bookmark; a plan of the Sons of Jacob Memorial Park (oversized); and various photographs of the Tobe family of Belleville.
- There are also two photographs made of oversize drawings (portraits) of persons unidentified but probably related to the Tobes.

- Administrative History
- Joe Roseman's parents, Bessie Baranski and David Roseman, came to Canada separately from Poland in 1918. Bessie had siblings already in Ontario: her sister Channah and brother-in-law Charles Glass, living in Kitchener at the time; brother Gordon; and brother Joe. All three brothers worked in second hand furniture and eventually switched to new furniture. They Anglicized the family name from Baranski to Brown.
- Settling in Kitchener by 1920, David Roseman had a job running the tuck shop at McBrine Baggage. By 1922 he had joined his brother-in-law Charles Glass in his store, Central Furniture on King Street East. David's wife Bessie helped deliver furniture until her brother Joe came on. Joe died in 1945 after being hit by a car in front of the store.
- David and Bessie had five children: Samuel, Esther (who married Sam Moldaver), Max, Ruth (married Henry Katz of Hamilton), and Joe. Samuel served and was killed in action in the Second World War. Joe began working at the furniture business in his second year of high school (1938) and stayed there until 1962 with his father retired and the business was sold. After this, Joe's brother Max opened his own store in Brantford; Joe opened one in Stratford; and Sam remained in Kitchener, opening his own small furniture store next to the original Central Furniture.

- This accession consists of records documenting the Jewish community of Cornwall. The records include newsclippings; B'nai Birth meeting minutes, dues ledger book, and membership pins; Hadassah meeting minutes; photographs; Beth-El Synagogue correspondence, memorial book, president speeches, congregational meeting minutes, annual general meeting minutes, and financial statements; and a cemetery plan and ledger book.
- Custodial History
- The records were in the custody of Mark Goldhamer, former president of the Beth El Synagogue and were originally lent to the Archives for research purposes for the Small Jewish Communities project. Upon discussion with the director of the Archives, Mark decided to donate the records to the OJA and thus they were transferred via Sharon Gubbay Helfer, oral historian and researcher/writer on the small Jewish Communities project.

- Bill Stern was the director of activities for the Hamilton Jewish Community Centre (JCC) from 1956-1960. He was the director of the JCC from 1963-1964 and then executive director of the Hamilton Council of Jewish Organizations (CJO) from 1964-1973.
- He arrived in Hamilton as a graduate in social work, specializing in group work and camping activities. He played a major role in developing the Hamilton Jubilee Club, a senior day centre, kosher meals-on-wheels, an expanded camping program, and the Hamilton Council of Jewish Education. He was responsible for the separation of the JCC and the CJO, and the establishment of the CJO's successor, the Hamilton Jewish Federation.
- Scope and Content
- This series consists of photographs of the Hamilton Jewish community, taken during Bill Stern's professional involvement with the Hamilton Jewish Community Centre and the Hamilton Council of Jewish Organizations. There are also a few images that Bill had acquired that were taken shortly before his arrival and shortly after his departure.
- The images depict various Hamilton community members, as well as CJO and community centre events and meetings. They have been arranged chronologically and described at the file and item level.

- Monroe Abbey (1904–1993) was a Canadian lawyer and president of the Canadian Jewish Congress from 1968 to 1971.
- Scope and Content
- Item is a copy of a letter sent to Mr. Monroe Abbey, QC, from B. G. Kayfetz. In the letter, Kayfetz clarifies "the relationship and status of the [United Jewish People's Order] to the Jewish community and to the Canadian Jewish Congress in particular." The letter also addresses an allegation that "Ben Kayfetz has instructed all B'nai B'rith lodges not to rent space in the Morris Winchevsky Centre." Kayfetz denies this claim. The final subject to be addressed in the letter is UJPO's "relationship to [the] USSR and Communism."

- Item is a copy of a letter sent to Monroe Abbey, QC, from Jack Cowan, the national president of the United Jewish People's Order (UJPO). In the letter, Cowan takes issue with an article that appeared in the Toronto Telegram on 6 May 1969, in which it was claimed UJPO "was expelled from the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1951 because it felt it was communist-oriented." The same article then went on to cite Benjamin Kayfetz to the effect that UJPO was "a communist front organization." Cowan offers his own description of UJPO, highlights its contributions to Israel, and makes the allegation that Kayfetz had "instructed" B'nai B'rith chapters and lodges to "refrain from meeting in our Toronto Centre."

In addition to the clippings, there are several other items: the first draft of Eddie Duke's "The History of the Jewish Community of Kirkland Lake," a copy of a typed article titled "The Way We Were" by Bettyann Elliott (née Archer), two issues of Beth Tikvah Sisterhood Magazine (spring 1988 and spring 1990), and a typed document titled "Judaica - Canadian" that was prepared by Fred Schaeffer. Of note is an article written by Shelley Duke entitled "Somebody's Somebody: Jews from Small Communities" dated 16 December 1985.

- Accession consists of textual records, graphic materials, and artifacts documenting the Shaarey Shomayim Synagogue in Fort William (Thunder Bay) and the Jewish community of Thunder Bay. The records include a brass menorah and shivisi from the Synagogue, along with a wooden tablet of the ten commandments (1920s); a marriage register (1908-1951); a minute book of the chevra kadisha (1913-1986); B'nai Brith Lodge membership registration books, minute books, a dues book, and a framed citation (1911-1970); and several photographs including the Jewish community's float for the coronation of King George VI, the turning of the sod for the new synagogue, the B'nai Brith Lodge annual picnic in Port Arthur and a meeting honouring Jewish servicemen of the Second World War, and three portraits of the Synagogue's honourary presidents.

- Accession consists of material pertaining to the Sephardic community in Toronto including a "Final Report - Integration - North African Jewish Community in Metro Toronto" (1974), two reports by Joseph Kage, a presentation by Leon Oziel (1984), listings of Sephardic congregations and Chevra Kadisha and their officers, and letterheads for organizations and schools. In addition there is a paper titled "A History of the Sephardim in Toronto" written by a student William Myers for a university course in history. The course director was Professor Irving Abella.

- Custodial History
- The 1928 cookbook (and possibly the others) belonged to Helen Merker Stanway (her last name was previously Steinberg before it was changed to Stanway). The donor saw the book for sale at her friend's garage sale and took it for the OJA. Her friend was the daughter of Helen.

- Administrative History
- The Rabovsky family is one of the oldest in the Owen Sound Jewish community. Nathan Rabovsky arrived with his brother in 1907; his marriage to Goldie Cadesky in 1909 was the first Jewish wedding in Owen Sound, for which a rabbi was brought in from Toronto. Goldie was the eldest daughter of Ethel Lewisky and Isaac Ezekiel Cadesky, for whom the Beth Ezekiel Synagogue is named. Nathan and Goldie had seven children: Sadie, Meyer (Mike), Irving, Lillian, Moses (Moe), Bertha and Max. Moses, a pilot in the Second World War, was killed in 1944. Max married Celia Gordon, and their granddaughter is donor Julie Gonik.

- This accession consists of electronic copies of original textual records, documenting the Jewish community of Owen Sound, Ontario. The records include a community draw ticket (1959); the Canadian Jewish Congress Educational Department code of practice, for discussion at the sixth regional conference on Jewish education (1957); a page from a donation ledger for the United Palestine Appeal (1948); the Beth Ezekiel Synagogue historic plaquing program book (1991); and an employment contract between the Synagogue and Rabbi H. Lasher (1962).
- Custodial History
- The original records are in the possession of the donor. The OJA was granted permission to scan the documents in June 2007, as part of the Ontario Small Jewish Communities initiative. These copies were then donated to the Archives on 2007-06-11.
