Scope and Content

Accession consists of photographs taken of the LGBTQ+ at the J group during 2019 Pride Month. Some of the photographs were taken on 21 June 2019, likely at the Trans March, while others were taken on 23 June 2019, likely at the Annual Pride Parade. The photograph of the three individuals modelling the LGBTQ+ at the J T-shirts was taken on 18 June 2019.

Administrative History

Following the dissolution of Kulanu Toronto in 2018, Miles Nadal JCC assumed responsibility for providing Jewish LGBTQ+ programming in midtown and downtown Toronto. This took the form of LGBTQ+ at the J, which, according to its mission statement, "strives to be the heart of Toronto's LGBTQ+ Jewish community, providing queer Jews opportunities to gather, celebrate and thrive." In 2019, the group participated in Toronto's annual Pride Parade.

Custodial History

Former executive director Justine Apple kept the records on a USB flash drive. In September 2018, she transferred copies of the records to a computer belonging to the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre.

Administrative History

Kulanu Toronto was founded in 2000. It incorporated as a not-for-profit in 2014. Following its dissolution in 2018, some of its functions were taken over by the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre LGBTQ Initiative.

The Sports Celebrity Dinners were developed by the Jewish Community Centre of Toronto in 1985. Each year, a different person connected with the world of sports was honoured by the community for their contributions. The night included a dinner, guest speakers and celebrity appearances, and usually an athletic demonstration or participatory event that related to the honouree's sport. For example, a boxing match, a skating demonstration or a batting cage.

This series consists of photographs and program books from eight of the annual Sports Celebrity Dinners held by the Jewish Community Centre of Toronto.

This file consists of one program book from the 1987 Sports Celebrity Dinner and one plaque presented to William G. Davis, the recipient of the tribute. William G. Davis was the former Premier of Ontario, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Football League and a promoter of athletics. Davis was also a supporter of the building of the Skydome.

The MC for the evening was Brian McFarlane. Celebrity guests included Mike Ditka, John Brophy, Stephen Condren, Leo Cahill, Sandra Post, Russ Howard, Jack Donohue, Sheila Forshaw, Bill Simmons, Sylvia Ruegger, Willie Pless and Milt Ottey.

This file consists of a program book and photographs taken at the 1989 Sports Celebrity Dinner. The dinner featured a tribute to R. Alan Eagleson, executive director of the National Hockey League Players Association, chief organizer of the Canada Cup and the driving force behind the 1972 series between Russia and Canada. The dinner was held at the Constellation Hotel on 13 June 1989. There is also a plaque that was presented to Eagleson by the JCC.

The photographs are of the guest of honour and other celebrity guests, the JCC Executive Committee members and Sports Celebrity Committee members, along with the invited guests. Spencer Evans was the publicity chief for Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1940s and 1950s and in 1963, became the director of public relations for the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club.

Phil Silvers was an American comedic actor, who began on Broadway and eventually worked, known for roles in such films as Lady Be Good, Coney Island, Cover Girl, and Summer Stock. In 1952, he won a Tony award for his performance in the Broadway show, Top Banana.

Silvers became a household name in 1955, when he starred as Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko in The Phil Silvers Show. The military comedy became a huge television hit. Throughout the 1960s, he appeared internationally in films such as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and 40 Pounds of Trouble.

Dale Alexander was a Major League baseball player for the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox. He won the American League batting crown in 1933 and was one of the best hitters in baseball between 1929 and 1932, but a leg injury shortened his major league career.

Spiff Evans was publicity chief for the Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1940s and 1950s. Sam Shefsky was the manager of The Tip Tops softball team during the 1940s, when it won the world championships in Little Rock, Arkansas. He influenced the building of Exhibition Stadium built and was one of the driving forces behind bringing major league baseball to Toronto. Sam Shefsky's sister Jennie was married to Abe Magerman, a unionist with the ILGWU.

Sam Shopsowitz was the son of Harry and Jennie Shopsowitz who started the family business, Shopsy's Delicatessen, in 1921. Sam eventually took over the business in 1947 with his brother Izzy. The Shopsy's Pee Wee hockey team was the Toronto Marlboros pee-wee team and was sponsored by Shopsy's Delicatessan. Archie Wilson was an American baseball player who played in the major league for the New York Yankees, the Washington Senators and the Boston Red Sox, from 1951-1952. After this he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball club.

Conn Smythe is best known as the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1927 to 1961 and as the builder of Maple Leaf Gardens.

Ed Fitkin was a public relations officer with Maple Leaf Gardens and later went on to a career in radio sportscasting.

Buck Houle was the general manager of the Toronto Marlboros, which was a minor hockey organization directly sponsored by the Toronto Maple Leafs in order to train new players, starting at the age of nine.
