Scope and Content
Accession consists of records related to the planning and production of a centenary journal and dinner in honour of the 100th anniversary of The Beth Jacob V’anshe Drildz Congregation. Included are submissions for the journal including a detailed history of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, print proofs of the journal, congratulatory letters from politicians and Jewish organizations and congratulatory ads. In addition there are copies of speeches from the dinner held on June 26, 1997, a sample of the invitation and general planning correspondence.
Photographs taken for the journal feature exterior shots of the Beth Jacob Synagogue on Henry St and Wilmington and interior shots of the Bimah, Aron ha-kodesh, stained glass windows, sanctuary from the Wilmington Street location along with clergy, members of the sisterhood and brotherhood, presidents and others involved in the synagogue.
Administrative History
Beth Jacob congregation was founded in 1897 and was located in three different locations in St. John’s Ward before the land at 23 Henry Street was purchased in 1919. Known as the Henry Street Shul or the Polishe Shul, the new purpose-built synagogue was dedicated in 1922. The dedication ceremonies attracted so many onlookers that the police had to be called in to manage the crowds.
The synagogue could accommodate up to 800 worshippers – 500 in the men’s section and 300 in the women’s balcony. According to Orthodox tradition, men and women sit separately during synagogue services. Its neo-Romanesque design was typical of other North American synagogues of the period that borrowed heavily from church architecture, often featured arched entranceways, rose windows and twin towers. Its vaulted ceiling was capped by a massive central dome and four smaller ones. It boasted a mikvah (ritual bath) in its basement as well as an assembly hall, a smaller chapel, a brick sukkah and a caretaker’s apartment. The synagogue’s intricately carved Aron ha-kodesh and Bimah were also designed by Brown and were removed in the mid 1960s when the congregation relocated to its current location in North York. The building was sold and converted into the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church.
Benjamin Brown considered Beth Jacob Synagogue to be his crowning achievement. It was the first synagogue in Toronto (perhaps Canada) to be designed by a Jewish architect and signified the Jewish community’s increased confidence in its new generation of emerging professionals.

Admin History/Bio
The Brantford Hebrew Association, Congregation Beth David’s precursor, was founded in 1907 when Rabbi Backer officiated Brantford’s first public Jewish religious service in an upper hall on George Street. Services had previously taken place in the homes of Jewish families, who had begun settling in the area around the turn of the century. By 1911, services had moved to the old Conservative Hall at Dalhousie and King Street. In 1915, the congregation purchased a building at 33 Palace Street and remodeled it into a synagogue. This building was also used as a community centre and for the Congregation’s Hebrew school.
On October 13th, 1911 the congregation was incorporated, and the following year it purchased land for a cemetery in the northeast corner of Mount Hope Cemetery. Due to increasing membership, a new synagogue was built at 50 Waterloo Street in 1948. In January 1950, the congregation changed its name to Beth David in honour of member David Axler, who died during the Second World War while training as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The congregation was at its peak in the 1960s with 150 member families. However, membership drastically fell after the children of this generation moved to larger cities and their parents followed after retirement. By 1999, only 28 families remained as members and services were reduced to being held on the High Holidays and special occasions, such as, b'nai mitzvah. Dwindling resources and membership forced the congregation to close around 2001. Throughout its existence, over 30 rabbis served the congregation, including Rabbi Saul Wolfe Gringorten (ca. 1910-1923). Its cemetery continues to be looked after by Allan Norris, a past president of the congregation.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of copies of photographs depicting members of Club Aquilla (1940s), a Jewish high school social club for boys located in the Bloor and Dufferin/Ossington area, and a reunion photo of the same club (1962). Identified are Norman Burns, Dr. Wilf and Faige Meisner and Martin Strom. Also included is a photo of the 10th anniversary jubille dinner for the Ozerover Mutual Benefit Society (1946); a photograph of men attending Norman Burns' stag at the Ambassador Schvitz formerly located at Bathurst and Sheppard; and a photograph of a Rochwerg family reunion (1980s). Textual records include a certificate for Sandra Goldman (Burns) declaring her a member in good standing in Sha'aron Chapter of B'nai Brith Women, and a Rochwerg family history written by Jerry Ross.
Administrative History
Norman Burns (26 July 1926-14 May 2012) was born in Toronto, the son of Benjamin and Lottie Burnstein. He had one sister; Sadie Rash (b. 21 Aug. 1913-d. 2 Nov. 1979). Benjmain and Lottie were born in Russia, moved to England and then to Toronto in 1902. Norman Burns married Sandy Rochwerg in 1973.
Hyman (b. ca. 1903) and Faige (b. ca. 1903) Rochwerg (nee Kestenbaum) were married in Poland around 1923. Together they had four children: Pearl Wetstein (b. 1925, Poland-d. 1990, Toronto); Bess Felman (b. 15 Aug. 1926, Poland-d. 2002); Norman Ross (b. 1928, Poland-d. 1955); Jerry Ross (b. 16 Aug. 1941, Toronto); and Sandy Burns (b. 16 Oct. 1942, Toronto). In 1929, Hyman immigrated to Hamilton. In 1935, Faige followed with her children; Pearl, Bess and Norman. Shortly after Faige arriving, the family moved to Toronto where they opened up a grocery store on Baldwin Street. Five years later, they had saved enough money to buy their own building across the street at 27 Baldwin, where they reopened their grocery store next door to Mandel's Creamery and Silverstein's Bakery. Sandy recalls the Silversteins allowing members of the community the use of their ovens to bake bread and prepare Shabbat dinners. Their father's brother, Shlomo Meir Rochwerg was the Shamas at Beth Jacob Synagogue.
