The Fanny Solway Award is a University of Toronto Faculty of Law bursary set up by Fanny's family after her death to be given to a first-year student that has obtained standing in pre-law studies satisfactory to the council and who satisfies the council of capacity to be an outstanding law student and demonstrates financial need.

David and Fanny Robitaille (née Hoffman) came to Canada around 1890, using the passport of a deceased man named Rabinovitch. They first arrived in Lake Megantic, Quebec, and were named Robitaille by the French residents who couldn't pronounce Rabinovitch. They lived in Montreal, Winnipeg, Sudbury, Webbwood and Massey. Both David and Fanny died in 1951.

Herbert Solway received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a bachelor of laws degree in 1955. He was called to the bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as chair until 1994 and partner until 1998. He continues to serve as counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Herbert has also been a director of Gluskin Sheff and Associates Inc. since May 2006. He is a director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and a founding director of the Tarragon Theatre Company. He was a founding director of Sun Media Corporation and a director of John Labatt Ltd.

Carol Solway is the daughter of Alex and Fanny Solway, brother of Herbert Solway, and the niece of Sylvia Schwartz.

Ellis Irving Litch Shapiro (1905-2002) was born in Toronto to Annie and Joseph Shapiro. In 1934 he married Fanny Enushevsky (1910-1991) originally from Guelph, and had two children: Elaine (Glassman) and Barry. Ellis was very involved in the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto fundraising campaigns, as United Jewish Appeal campaign co-chairman. He also held positions in several other organizations, particularly during the 1930s to the 1960s. He was chairman of the Beth Tzedec Board of Governors, first vice-president of YM-YWHA, and chairman of the New Building Committee, president of the Jewish Camp Council of Toronto, president of B'nai Brith Toronto Lodge, president of Goel Tzedec Men's Club, and president of the first Combined Board of Goel Tzedec and Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue. He was on the executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, on the Budget Committee of United Jewish Appeal of Toronto, treasurer of the Northwood Golf and Country Club, and a member of the Primrose Club. He was also noble grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) in Guelph, Ontario. Ellis' father and grandfather were founders of Goel Tzedec Synagogue on University Avenue in Toronto.

In 1930 Ellis founded, along with his partner Max B. Ennis, the Dominion Gasket and Manufacturing Company Ltd., of which he was president. He was also president of Faul and Timmins Incorporated, Buffalo.

Fanny was similarly involved with community organizations and held various positions on the auxiliary boards of the Jewish Home for the Aged, Baycrest Hospital, and the New Mount Sinai Hospital. She was also on the board of the Jewish Camp Council and the Mothers and Babes Summer Rest Home, on the executive of Hadassah, the National Council of Jewish Women, and B'nai Brith Women. She was co-president of the UJWF Women's Service Council and campaign co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal Women's Division.

Custodial History

Records were donated by Elaine Glassman, the daughter of Ellis I. and Fanny Shapiro.

Scope and Content

Fonds consists of textual and graphic material relating to Ellis I. and Fanny Shapiro and their involvement with the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto fundraising campaigns. Included are congratualatory letters and cards, certificates, reports, meeting invites, agendas and minutes, UJWF correspondence and memoranda, a UJWF Women's Service Council constitution (1956), newpaper clippings and six photographs.

Title note: Fanny Houzer (née Greisman) was identified by her daughter Carolyn Epstein on 19 October 2017. Carolyn submitted a research request stating that she was able to identify the women previously identified as an Older Woman. Fanny Houzer was Gertrude's eldest sister. In all there were three Greisman sisters, Fanny, Rosetta, and Gertrude. Fanny married Jacob Houzer and had five children, Cecil (m. Vise), Percy (m. Manace), Rosetta (m. Manace), Henry, and Gertrude (m. Heartsfield). Elsa (m. Myers) and Carolyn (m. Epstein) are the daughters of Rosetta and Gordon Manace [among the first family physicians to practice in Toronto].

Alex Solway was married to Fanny Schwartz, sister of Sylvia Schwartz, and had two children, Carol and Herbert. He had three grandchildren, Gary, Diane and Michael. He died on 1 July 1988.

Alex was a member of the Board of Govenors of Beth Tzedec during the 1950s.

Fanny (née Schwartz) Solway was the sister of Sylvia Schwartz. She was married to Alex Solway (d. 1 July 1988) and had two children, Carol and Herbert. She had three grandchildren, Gary, Diane and Michael. She died on 22 April 1971.

The Fanny Solway Award, is a University of Toronto Faculty of Law bursary set up by her family after her death to be given to a first year student that has obtained standing in pre-law studies satisfactory to the council and who satisfies the Council of capacity to be an outstanding law student, and demonstrates financial need.

Herbert Solway received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1955. He was called to the Bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as a Chariman until 1994 and Partner until 1998. He continues to serve as Counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Herbert has also been a Director of Gluskin Sheff and Associates Inc. since May 2006. He is a Director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and a Founding director of the Tarragon Theatre Company. He was a Founding director of Sun Media Corporation, as well as a Director of John Labatt Ltd.

Carol Solway is the daughter of Alex and Fanny Solway, brother of Herbert Solway and the niece of Sylvia Schwartz.
