Admin History/Bio
Benevolent societies, or landsmenshaften, were formed in the early part of the twentieth-centurey along shtetl lines by Eastern European Jewish immigrants to Toronto. The societies served to unite members of the community who originated from the same town or region, and also helped to secure passage to Toronto for those who were still in Europe. The societies also provided services to its dues-paying membership such as: aid in finding employment or accomodation, hospital and special medical care, doctor's visitation, sick benefit payments, funeral benefits and arrangements, and in many cases a burial plot. Some societies also provided a loans to its membership through a credit society. In later years, many benevlent societies also began to act as fraternal organizations that engaged in cultural and philanthropic programming.
The benevolent societies included in this sub-series were founded on the following dates: Chenstochover, 1914; Chmielnicker, ?; Drildzer, 1934; Hebrew Sick Benefit, 1910; Ivansker, 1931; Keltzer, 1913; Lagover, 1932; Lubliner, ?; Ostrovtzer Independent, 1925; Pride of Israel, 1905; Radomer, 1935; Stashiver, 1918; Warshaver Lodzer, 1929.
[Dates taken from: Rosenberg, Louis. "Jewish Mutual Benefit & Friendly Societies in Toronto: The First Fifty Ayears. 1896-1945"]

Administrative History
Founded in 1980, the Transnistria Survivors' Association works diligently to provide a voice for and raise awareness of a lesser known group of Holocaust survivors from Transnistria, an area by the eastern Moldovan border with today's Ukraine that was the third largest Jewish population in Europe. As early as 1933, the Jews of Bucovina and Basarabia were affected by the brutally repressive laws aimed at Jews enforced by both the Nazis and the Romanians, neighbours turning on neighbours. By 1942, over 100,000 Romanian Jews were deported or murdered and many were interned at concentration camps in the Transnistria area. Those who survived these tragic circumstances and made a new home in Toronto, found one another and banded together to lend each other support and to tell their largely unknown story of oppression and survival. They organize regular Hazkarah (memorial) services and untiringly present their stories at speaking engagements and synagogues.

Admin History/Bio
This was a very active committee consisting of representatives from the fraternal orders, sick benefit societies and landsmanshaften. An early chairman was Alfred Green. In 1947, it was Carl Herlick, K.C. The committee dealt - or tried to deal - among other issues, with the relationship of the societies and the medical profession. After the expulsion of the United Jewish Peoples Order in 1950, it seemed to peter out. The Societies Division held annual social events - one year at the Prince George Hotel.

Admin History/Bio
In 1913, a mutual benefit society for women called the Ezras Noshim Society was formed in Toronto. Ezras Noshim started collecting funds around 1916 to purchase a home that would be converted into Toronto's first Jewish Old Folks Home. The forerunner to Baycrest Centre opened in 1919 as the Toronto Jewish Old Folks Home. It was located on Cecil Street in downtown Toronto and the women of Ezras Noshim made beds, cooked kosher meals, washed sheets and sponsored fund-raising events.
In 1954, the Jewish Home for the Aged opened on Bathurst Street to accommodate their expanding needs with the addition of a new feature -- Baycrest Hospital. This location, known as the Baycrest Centre, expanded to include several new buildings that were better able to meet the needs of the Jewish community in Toronto.
Scope and Content
Sub-series consists of negatives documenting the events and activities of several Jewish Home for the Aged groups, including the men's service group, the women's auxiliary, and the staff and residents. The images depict meetings and banquets, fundraising campaigns, images of the interior of the building, the residents partaking in daily activities and classes, and special visits by dignitaries. The negatives have been arranged chronologically by event and are described at the file or item level.

Admin History/Bio
With the post-war expansion of Toronto's Jewish population, the original Jewish Home for the Aged on Cecil Street had become totally outmode in size and treament capability. By 1949, an expanding economy made it possible to begin the necessary planning for a much larger replacement facility, which included the Baycrest Hospital, at 3560 Bathurst Street in North York. The sod-turning ceremony occurred on 7 June 1951. Although fundraising for the construction this facility was not the responsibility of the United Jewish Welfare Fund, the entire Toronto Jewish community was to be canvassed for the funds to build it. The proven fundraising expertise of the UJWF, its donor lists, and the goals of its own annual campaign ensured that constant correspondence and cooperation between the campaigns was both necessary for success and vital to the avoidance of campaign competition. The continued success and growth of community contributions to all was the outcome of this ongoing collaboration.
Scope and Content
Series consists of correspondence and occasional reports documenting the relationship between the UJWF and the fundraising campaigns for the new Home for the Aged being constructed during the 1950s. Files in this sub-series have been arranged chronologically.
