- Series consists of negatives and proofs produced by Sylvia Schwartz in her studio. The images depict formal portraits of both male and female Jewish military personnel. While some images show just the head and upper body of the sitter, others capture the entire body in uniform.
- There are thirty-seven portraits in total. Each portrait depicts a member of the Jewish community who served in the Second World War. Portraits feature images of members of the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and the Red Cross. In addition to this, there are three images of Canadian Jewish doctors who were members of the American military. Female military personnel in this series served as WRENs and in the Red Cross.
- In image 34, the soldier is pictured with his wife and in image 20 the soldier is pictured with his bride. Records have been arranged alphabetically by last name at the item level.

- Sub-series consists of negatives and proofs of portraits taken by Sylvia Schwartz. Portraits were taken both in her studio and in her family home. Images taken in earlier years show the full body of the sitter in the interior of the family home. Later images are studio portraits, showing just the head and upper body of the subject.
- The earliest portraits taken are of Ruth Schwartz, Sylvia's sister. They are interesting in their use of props and lighting. Other early portraits are of Gertrude and Joseph Schwartz and Fanny Solway (née Schwartz).
- Other portraits include images of Gerald, Ralph and Rhoda Halbert (the children of Sylvia's cousin Faye Halbert), Jack and Jewell Schwartz (her uncle and cousin), Isaac, Jill and Jan Shleser (her brother-in-law and nieces) and Alex, Carol and Herbert Solway (her brother-in-law, niece and nephew).

- The Jewish Community Centre of London was originally affiliated with the United Way; however, today they form a part of the United Jewish Appeal London Federation. Previously, the Centre offered programmes for the Jewish community of London including day camps, Hebrew schools, seniors groups, and other recreational events. Today, these programmes are still being offered, but have grown substantially to accommodate the increasing demand.

There are 2 photos of children at an Israel dance festival (Rikudiyah) in a gymnasium.
- Administrative History
- The Sarnia Jewish community worshiped at the old Davis Street Synagogue which was established in 1922. In 1950 ground was broken and the cornerstone laid for the Ahavas Isaac Synagogue and Community Centre. The new building opened in 1951.
- Alvin Fox was president of the congregation in the early 1980s and his wife Valerie was active in the Sisterhood.

- Custodial History
- The records were in the custody of Mark Goldhamer, former president of the Beth El Synagogue and were originally lent to the Archives for research purposes for the Small Jewish Communities project. Upon discussion with the director of the Archives, Mark decided to donate the records to the OJA and thus they were transferred via Sharon Gubbay Helfer, oral historian and researcher/writer on the small Jewish Communities project.

- As a portrait photographer, Sylvia Schwartz excelled at photographing children. Through the 1940s and 1950s she carved out a niche for herself, becoming well known in Toronto for specializing in this area. Because of her special relationship with children and the bond she was able to form with them, her child portraits display her most creative work.

- Series consists of negatives and proofs produced by Sylvia Schwartz in her portrait studio. Images depict children aged four months to twelve years old. They are all formal portraits, showing the children with a variety of props, poses and backdrops. Some depict children by themselves, while others are pictured with their siblings.

- This accession consists of textual and graphic records relating to the Downtown Jewish Community School. The records include family education grants, applications and reports, class lists, board meeting minutes and correspondence, financial records and audited statements, photographs, children's artwork, news clippings, program material, and a scrapbook.
- Custodial History
- The records were kept in the offices of Joan Schoenfeld, principal of the Downtown Jewish Community School until their transfer to the OJA on 2006-08-24.
- Administrative History
- The Downtown Jewish Community School is an independent afternoon and Sunday school of approximately 200 students affiliated with the Board of Jewish Education UJA Federation of Toronto. It caters to children in the public school system. Although the objectives of the DJCS are primarily educational, encouragement of a sense of community among Jews in downtown Toronto has always been, and continues to be, a prime concern.
- The DJCS opened in the Bloor "Y" on Sunday, September 7, 1979 with a full student enrollment of forty-seven children in three grade levels. The full school-community consisted of seventy-seven families -- members, whose children attended the school, and associate members, most of whose children were on the waiting list. Programs included classes in Jewish heritage, culture, values and Hebrew language, community holiday celebrations as well as adult and family education.

- This accession consists of electronic copies of original textual records, documenting the Jewish community of Owen Sound, Ontario. The records include a community draw ticket (1959); the Canadian Jewish Congress Educational Department code of practice, for discussion at the sixth regional conference on Jewish education (1957); a page from a donation ledger for the United Palestine Appeal (1948); the Beth Ezekiel Synagogue historic plaquing program book (1991); and an employment contract between the Synagogue and Rabbi H. Lasher (1962).
- Custodial History
- The original records are in the possession of the donor. The OJA was granted permission to scan the documents in June 2007, as part of the Ontario Small Jewish Communities initiative. These copies were then donated to the Archives on 2007-06-11.

- Bill Stern was the director of activities for the Hamilton Jewish Community Centre (JCC) from 1956-1960. He was the director of the JCC from 1963-1964 and then executive director of the Hamilton Council of Jewish Organizations (CJO) from 1964-1973.
- He arrived in Hamilton as a graduate in social work, specializing in group work and camping activities. He played a major role in developing the Hamilton Jubilee Club, a senior day centre, kosher meals-on-wheels, an expanded camping program, and the Hamilton Council of Jewish Education. He was responsible for the separation of the JCC and the CJO, and the establishment of the CJO's successor, the Hamilton Jewish Federation.
- Scope and Content
- This series consists of photographs of the Hamilton Jewish community, taken during Bill Stern's professional involvement with the Hamilton Jewish Community Centre and the Hamilton Council of Jewish Organizations. There are also a few images that Bill had acquired that were taken shortly before his arrival and shortly after his departure.
- The images depict various Hamilton community members, as well as CJO and community centre events and meetings. They have been arranged chronologically and described at the file and item level.

- Bill Stern was very involved in the Toronto Jewish community. In particular, he was active with the United Jewish Welfare Fund, where he served as a divisional director, the Canadian Zionist Federation, as the executive director, the Canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Jewish Home for the Aged, the Jewish Film Festival and the Ontario Jewish Archives. He also assisted many organizations in a consulting capacity, following his leave from communal affairs.

- This series consists of photographs of individuals and organizations associated with the Toronto Jewish community. Bill Stern, along with other members of his family, are featured in many of the photographs, as they were members of the various organizations.
