Landmarks

The Labour Zionist Order was an outgrowth of the Labour Zionist party in Israel (the Mapai party). They carried out a number of different functions. They were pro-labour and pro-Zionist. They acted as a mutual benefit society—the Labour Zionist Alliance or Farband, formally known as the Jewish National Workers Alliance or Farband Labour Zionist Order. They also operated a school for children called the Farband Folks Shule (later Bialik Hebrew Day School). There was a fundraising organization that they oversaw called the Israel Histadrut of Toronto whose annual campaign raised money for the Israel Histadrut in Israel (the Federation of Labour in Israel), founded in 1920. The campaign money was used to fund economic, trade union, military, social, and cultural activities in Israel, as well as to provide a comprehensive system of health insurance and hospital services to workers. The Israel Histadrut campaign in Toronto had an autonomous executive board, however it's activities were overseen by the Labour Zionist Order.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of records documenting the activities of the Farband of Lithuanian Jews. Included are 18 photographs, mostly group photographs, of members of the Farband of Lithuanian Jews. There is also a medical card that states Madesker's membership to the Farband. Additionally, there are a number of booklets: Holocaust Remembrance booklet, Baycrest Honour Roll, Canadian Jewry in 1974, An Overview of an Active Jewish Community (Saul Hayes, OC, QC), Souvenir Program-Farband-Salute to Israel's 36th Independence Day (May 6, 1984), On Wings of Song (Rev. Nathan Stolnitz).
Custodial History
Records belonged to Ruwin Madesker and were donated to the OJA by his son, Michael.
Administrative History
Ruwin Madesker was born in Wilno, Lithuania in 1899. He came to Toronto in 1947 with his family in 1947 after spending 2 years in the Vilno Ghetto and one year with the underground. He also served 2 years with the Polish Army during the Second World War. In Toronto, he was involved with the Jewish Public Library, JIAS, Toronto Florists's Telegraph Delivery, and Toronto Cultural Society. He was an ardent Zionist and visited Israel in 1961 on the Histadrut Goodwill Mission. He also contributed articles to the Jewish Daily Journal, Toronto. (Who's Who, 1965)

Accession consists of a 1937 group picture of a class at Peretz Shule. The teacher, J. Danielak is seated in the centre of the first row. There is also a group photo of the choir at Camp Yungvelt in 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Seltzer are in the second row from the bottom at the far left. The choir teacher Mr. Riegelhoff is in the second row from the bottom in the centre.

Accession consists of one original photograph, one copy print and one copy negative of the Yhoash Club of the Folks Farband Shule. Harry Steiner is in the centre of the top row. Second row (from the top), left to right: Esther Grant; Jules (or Julius) Sokoloff; Jack Mitchell is the 6th person from the left. Pearl Tennenbaum is at the right end of the 3rd row from the top. Elsie Freeman is the first person on the left of the 4th row (sitting on the floor).

Scope and Content
Accession consists of reminiscences of the founding of the cheder in the Toronto West End called the Junction Shule and comments on the Peretz Shule. They were dictated to a friend who wrote them in Yiddish.
Administrative History
Mr. Cowan was the father of Saul Cowan and the grandfather of Trudy Cowan , who was appointed as the Alberta representative of the Historic Sites and Monument Board of Canada in 1985.

File consists of six program books, a seder invitation, donation receipts, a sympathy card and a form in Yiddish. The program books are for the twenty-third-to-twenty-eighth(with the exception of the twenty-fifth) annual theatrical events presented by B. Borochov Branch 124 of the Farband Labor Zionist Order. There is also a fiftieth anniversary program book (1917-1967) commemorating the Branch's golden jubilee.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of records documenting the history and activities of the Minsker Farband and Adath Shalom Synagogue. Included are a 50th anniversary booklet (1976), 60th anniversary booklet (1986), 65th anniversary booklet (1991) and photocopies of clippings from the Sunday Sun articles dated June 17, [1979] and May 13, 1995 reporting on the men and women (who are well beyond the age of 13) who participated in a group bar and bat mitzvah ceremony, initiated by Cantor Martin Rosenblum who participated in the ceremony as well. Records from the Minsker Farband include a navy leather bound manuscript book with "Young Minsker Social Club" embossed on the cover. "The Book of Life is Presented by William and Charlotte Kaplan in Memory of Libba Elka Kaplan, 26 JUN 1954, Ann Kaplan Goldblatt, 9 JAN 1959 and Chaim Libetsky, 13 DEC 1930. Each page of the book of life lists milestone celebrations, birth announcements and memorials. All entries were hand written in calligraphy from (1961-1968). In addition, there are two minute books handwritten in Yiddish for the periods 1929-1932 and 1935-37; meeting and executive meeting minute books and membership lists including organizations participating in The Young Mens' Minsker Farband (1948-1949); Young Men's Social Club Membership cards listing names, addresses, businesses or employers and other affiliations (1948 to 1953); an invitation and programme for Oneg Shabbat and Shabbat Morning services in honour of the 65th Anniversary of Adath Sholom Synagogue and the 25th Anniversary tribute to Cantor and Spiritual Leader Martin Rosenblum (1991); a timeline on the history of the Minsker Farband handwritten on a note pad by Ms. Bev Breslow; and an unidentified photocopy of a photograph.
Custodial History
The Adath Shalom Synagogue records belonged to donor Shae Eckler. The Minsker Farband records were given to Shae's husband Morey Eckler between 1995 and 2000. Shae could not recall the name of the original donor.
Administrative History
The Minsker Farband was established in 1926 by a small group of men who hailed from the town of Minsk, Russia. In 1927, the wives formed the Minsker Farband Ladies' Auxiliary. (Information as transcribed from the notes of Ms. Bev Breslow).
