Scope and Content

This accession consists of one album containing photographs, newsclippings, flyers and invitations related to the Temple Shalom community of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. The photographs depict members of the congregation celebrating various religious holidays and other communal events, as well as photos taken at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Temple Shalom's new building "The Cedars Worship Centre". There are also two photographs of the exterior of the former Church of the Good Shepherd, where the Temple originally held their services.

The audio cassette consists of 21 Shabbat songs recorded in 1998 by the Temple Shalom community and features Neshama, a local folk music group consisting of Mark Pancer, Ruth Shushan, Wendy Weinberg and Laura Wolfson.

Custodial History

The records were in the possession of the donor until they were donated to the Archives on July 22, 2008.

Administrative History

Joe Roseman's parents, Bessie Baranski and David Roseman, came to Canada separately from Poland in 1918. Bessie had siblings already in Ontario: her sister Channah and brother-in-law Charles Glass, living in Kitchener at the time; brother Gordon; and brother Joe. All three brothers worked in second hand furniture and eventually switched to new furniture. They Anglicized the family name from Baranski to Brown.

Settling in Kitchener by 1920, David Roseman had a job running the tuck shop at McBrine Baggage. By 1922 he had joined his brother-in-law Charles Glass in his store, Central Furniture on King Street East. David's wife Bessie helped deliver furniture until her brother Joe came on. Joe died in 1945 after being hit by a car in front of the store.

David and Bessie had five children: Samuel, Esther (who married Sam Moldaver), Max, Ruth (married Henry Katz of Hamilton), and Joe. Samuel served and was killed in action in the Second World War. Joe began working at the furniture business in his second year of high school (1938) and stayed there until 1962 with his father retired and the business was sold. After this, Joe's brother Max opened his own store in Brantford; Joe opened one in Stratford; and Sam remained in Kitchener, opening his own small furniture store next to the original Central Furniture.

Scope and Content

Accession contains records documenting the administration, programs and events of Beth Jacob Synagogue in Kitchener, from 1935 to 2008. Non-textual records include photographs, architectural drawings, artifacts, and a couple of books. The textual records include newsletters, correspondence, financial ledgers, community directories, event programmes, membership lists and dues ledgers. There is considerable material on the Talmud Torah, including teaching materials, curricula, student guides, notes on parent meetings, and correspondence. There are approximately 40 photographs in the accession, of which 25 are from one 1985 shul event. Other records relate to the cemetery, memorial plaques, adult education, nursery school, Sisterhood, youth programs, bar and bat mitzvots, clubs and chevra kadisha. There are several artifacts: Rabbi Rosensweig's quill pen, athletic trophies and medallions, I.D. bracelets, Tree of Life plaques, a Hadassah Convention name tag with ribbon from 1951, and an (empty) copper mezuzzah. Records of the Kitchener-Waterloo Hebrew Day School will form a second fonds when the accession is described (see accession file folder for proposed arrangement scheme). The Hebrew Day School records include parents and staff handbooks, procedure manual, teaching materials, certificates, correspondence, governance documents, student records and attendance books with class lists.

Administrative History

Eve Rosen Gordon was born in Russia in 1923. When she was three years old, her parents and paternal grandparents came to Canada with Eve's sister and brother. Her uncle Aaron Rosen had been in Kitchener, Ontario since 1903. His business was scrap metal, and Eve's father joined him in the work to pay off their tickets from Russia. Following that, he peddled with a horse and buggy. In 1933 he launched his own business, clearing and filling the swampy land by hand to build a multi-generation business, Rosen and Sons, which eventually moved into industrial waste.

Administrative History

Avraham Rosen was the patriarch of a Russian family that settled in Kitchener in the early twentieth century. His son Aaron Rosen came in 1903, raised a family, and established a successful rag and scrap metal business. Avraham and his wife Pesa came with their son Israel and his family in 1927. Avraham Rosen lived in Kitchener until his death in 1939. Israel's daughter Eve (the donor) still lives there.

Rabbi Philip (Shragah Phyvle) Rosensweig was born in Toronto to Meyer Rosensweig and Mary Rosensweig (née Naftolin), who had emigrated from Poland and Russia. As a young man, Philip studied at Yeshiva University in New York City, then the Jewish Theological Seminary in Toronto. There, he was privileged to study under Rabbi Avrum A. Price, one of the world’s leading talmudic scholars. Rabbi Rosensweig married Gitel Flicht of Toronto in 1953. Soon after, he was invited to serve as rabbi for Beth Jacob Synagogue in Kitchener. There, he and Gitel raised five children: Etta, Chavi, Naomi, Leah and Avrum. The rabbi was actively involved in congregation and community activities. He established the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation at the Waterloo Lutheran University (Wilfred Laurier University); visited Jewish inmates at local prisons, counseling them and advocating on their behalf for kosher food; he gave tours of the synagogue to visitors, and frequently addressed high school and university students, service clubs, churches and community groups. As well, the rabbi served for decades as principal and teacher at the Talmud Torah. Rabbi Rosensweig died suddenly on 27 October 1989 of a heart attack. He was buried in the family plot at Beth Shemesh in Israel, a special cemetery for rabbis and their families.

Accession consists of a scanned photograph of the Queen Esther chapter of Hadassah executive in 1964.

Administrative History

The Queen Esther Hadassah chapter in Kitchener was formed in 1926 by Mrs. Levine, wife of the rabbi. Most of the women in the community joined the new group, and many of them were still members fifty years later. The chapter had monthly meetings where the women met for discussion and planning of activities to raise money for Palestine. After the Second World War, the focus turned to support of Israel's orphanages, hospitals, hostels, and training centres for women. The first Hadassah Bazaar was held in 1962 and quickly became a successful and popular community event. As the years passed, the chapter collaborated more and more with the synagogue sisterhood. At one time Kitchener had three Hadassah chapters and a central Council, but since the 1980s these have dwindled. Today there is a single chapter in the city.

Scope and Content

The accession consists of six photographs of the Rosen family of Kitchener. The pictures are all portraits involving multiple generations of the family taken between 1912 and 1944. The people pictured include Aaron J. Rosen, his parents, his children, and one with his brother Israel Rosen. There is also a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship issued to Aaron Rosen. It is dated 1951, however it makes reference to his naturalization in 1911. Later documents include a copy of the Rosen-Shpizel family tree, and a letter written by the donor recounting her mother's reminiscences of life in Kitchener. The letter was written to accompany photographs that the donor loaned to Mr. Donald Bierstock in Kitchener, who was compiling a history of Beth Jacob congregation for its 75th anniversary.

Custodial History

The photographs belonged to Aaron Rosen's daughter Mary until she passed them on to her son in the early 1990s. He gave them to his sister Phyllis, the donor, in July 2009.

Administrative History

Aaron J. Rosen (1879-1973) was born in Checholia, Russia, the son of Avraham Zvi Rosen and Pesa Cohn. He was the first of his family to come to Canada, in 1903. He came ahead of his wife Sima Leah (1873-1948), and their son Irving (d. 1962). In Kitchener, Aaron established himself in the peddling business, founding Rosen Rag & Metal. After his wife and son joined him, they had two more children, Mary (1908-1996) and Joseph (1906-1916). Joseph died of diphtheria at the age of ten. He was one of the first to be buried in the Beth Jacob Cemetery.

Aaron Rosen was one of the founders of Beth Jacob Congregation in 1908, and was among those who signed the mortgage for the synagogue in 1924. The family rented a house at 156 Church Street, and later lived next to the Rosen Rag & Metal warehouse at 123 Strange Street. In 1927, Aaron brought over his brother Israel with his family and their parents.

In 1938, Aaron's daughter, Mary Rosen, married Ben Coles. They settled in Toronto. They had two children, Alan and Phyllis (the donor). Irving Rosen married Tillie Minsky and his children (in the photos) are Estelle and Gerry.

Sima Leah Rosen predeceased Aaron, and when he was 70 he remarried, wedding Rebecca (usually called Bayla) Kaplan (grandmother of Robert Kaplan, MP and Attorney General). The marriage was religious but not civil. Aaron Rosen died at the age of 93 in 1973. He is buried next to his first wife at Roselawn Cemetery in Toronto.

Rabbi Krivy came from Vilna. He was a shochet and teacher who served in Welland and Galt, Ontario, and by 1911, in Cobalt. Around 1917, he moved to Kitchener. He later moved to Toronto and opened a butcher shop at Dundas Street and Kensington Avenue. His store was subsequently bought by Barenholtz.

The house at 221 Ranee no longer exists as it was expropriated for the Allen Expressway. It was just south of the future Yorkdale Mall and also in the glidepath of Downsview Airport. Rose Penzner was the sister of Becky Feldman (married to Morris Feldman), whose son, Dr. Edward Feldman, was a Canadian military doctor who was assigned without experience, to run a medical unit treating Canadian and some German soldiers in Europe during the Second World War.
